I've been loving your videos. I am learning so much about art and graffiti through them. I've admired graffiti my whole life having grown up in a big city, but learning the concepts behind it is elevating that appreciation so much further. I've been keeping a graffiti sketchbook and practicing regularly now. I don't see myself going out and doing it given my day job, but I'm having fun sketching and practicing these things, and who knows maybe I'll do some of my own band logos with the skills I've learned, but regardless, the videos are entertaining, I'm learning shit, and I'm doing some more visual art when I'm not making music, thank you.

insane how much information is in your videos, i have watched this several times already, but its useful every once in a while to remind myself about how many aspects influence letter and name weight

That was great. Ive always thought of weight as in the "presence" of the item, but not the physiological assumption of gravity weight. Ive deliberately designed pieces with gravity in mind (top of the letters squashed the lower half), but not how my assumptions of gravity would affect perception of everything. And this is why Im here and watch videos on art, craft, engineering and any other creation, I want to understand better WHY I like something or dont like something and the complexities of what they (creators) do. I like people like you who articulate why they like something and knowing how difficult something really is is something I value very much. My best art teacher (Ms Gunther of 8GU) realized very quickly I was to lazy to practice art so spent a great deal of time teaching what makes art beyond the visual aesthetics and how to appreciate the skill that was involved in its creation....to me its like appreciating a demo that was done in just 4k, yeah its cool, but the fact you can do it in only 4k is eFn amazing. I dont agree with you HEAPS, but damn I appreciate your views and knowledge of art applied to graff. PS when i say demo's I mean.... www.pouet.net/ ...kinda stuff.....the art of code visualized.

I'm so glad you brought the idea of balancing the center of gravity, actually, when you brought it up in one of the twitch streams it kinda gave me an idea of how to change letter heights to support opposite letters in a pattern. So ya, thanks Grim!

Hi there good sir. So I set up a community wall on my fence which is a corner with 2 roads wrapping around it. Awesome how many people drive past and see it. I've never been a graffiti writer but always artistic in all sorts of mediums. So I started working on a tag, tag pieces, and more conventional art. Here's my question. To what extent am I possibly excluded or different from the predominant graffiti writer culture and ethos? I quickly recognised a difference in say ethical or aesthetic feelings when I started interacting with a graf help subreddit, and thought hmmmm I wonder if our different histories and willingness to do brave or risky illegal graffiti will limit the extent of our mutual understandings and beliefs around critique of my graffiti progress. I noticed fairly quickly that there appears to be something like a history and cultural pathway or right of passage for graffiti writers. As in the saying, standing on the shoulders of giants, there is possibly a large cohort of graffiti writers that confirm to a unified or egrandised image of the thoughts, feelings, beliefs and attitudes of REAL graffiti artists.

How would you balance eLMO. The m either takes up too much room and becomes the vocal point(not intended). Or too much gets hidden behind the L and looks shit. I understand negative space management but i think i keep trying to hard to play with the fundamentals.

I hope you don't mind but I am going to disagree with something you said. Value both light and dark plays a part only depending on the time of day. Take your example of the mountains being light while the forest being dark. The time of day would determine this. That was a day picture or dusk. Depending on cast shadows blocking light in the fore ground. If you go toward the night what is closest would have brighter colors and what is in the distance would have a darker value. Take a simple space picture. Planets near to you would be lighter and larger while those in the distance would be darker and smaller. As the night turns to day the sky in the distance would brighten while objects close to you would be darker. As the sun goes behind mountains at dusk you would have darker mountains, brighter sky in the distance while objects close to you would have to be lit in some way appearing lighter. So there is no one way to judge value the way you said it. On the flip side you were right as warm colors pop and cool colors recess. BTW.. loved this video. Made me think.
@Theartistblock
@Theartistblock 4 жыл бұрын
I mean true if you want we can debunk every fundamental just like how I said warm colors pop out BUT you can have a cool fill in and make that pop more than a warm fill. You can make light colors pop more or light values pop more than dark values but standard, in art, dark values hold more visual weight thats just fact, then you can add variables to change that. Also (forgot to write this the first time) but i dont mind one bit :D. I wouldnt be much good at my job if I was against people challenging the information, part of the job is being able to defend the info so i dont mind one bit!

Making art way more then it has to be. If you enjoy painting and it makes u feel good. Keep painting weather people like it or not. U can get away with whatever art u want to create. Heavy or light, falling over or supported. Art is not a crime

This is an informational tutorial and the people who frequently watch are people who want to know the science behind the art, not for those who just want to enjoy themselves. there's nothing wrong with just having fun, but we're here on this channel to learn. So no, I'm not making anything more than it has to be, just teaching the science of the art to those who want to learn it.
