I study at the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece and our professor mentioned your videos at her slide show in the class as an example of work in grafting trees. I also watched the follow up that you made six months later. I didn't know how it looks like, now I do. Thank you for your time.

Nice explanation at the video. Nothing is more discouraging than people who think they can patent our food supply. We must overcome this mentality if we're concerned about leaving a functioning society for our children.

People overreact about plant patents. People, not huge corporations, patient plant varieties. The patents only last 20 years. The patients protect the people who hybridize and release these plants. Patents protect commercial growers from over planting of certain varieties so they can make a living. No one is enforcing the law as far as keeping the back yard grower from experimenting. But if you try to propitiate hundreds of patented varieties, and try to sell them, be prepared to pay.

I bought a house with 2 apples trees and a tart cherry tree. They were very neglected. Is it possible to cut it down the trees to the size you had in the video and graft some of the branches back onto it so it has a better starting point. Or could I just trim them way back and leave that one branch to keep the tree healthy? I learn so much from your videos.

The problem with fruit form seeds is seedling variation. You will never get the same fruit. If you never thin the fruit it could cause alternate bearing, where it fruits only every-other year. You can graft onto it, though apricots are not the easiest to do.

Tom, I'd like you to talk about the inside reasons for using a root stock of a certain type and the advanages for using it. Also no one ever talks about graphing the cross pollinators onto the same tree. It makes sense to me but never hear it talked about.

I should do this with my Apple trees. I have one good tree and two bad trees. The bad trees are shaded by a grand old maple and grow straight up with very acute limb angles. I'm talking 15 digress or less. One Puts out fruit but not the other. The good tree produces very nice apples in abundance.
@DaveWilsonTrees9 жыл бұрын
stizan24 Apple is one of the easiest to graft. I've seen single apple trees with dozens of different varieties grafted in.
@DaveWilsonTrees13 жыл бұрын
@bottomgunner Yes, you sure can. During the dormant season. Mid winter Januery to early February.
@DaveWilsonTrees11 жыл бұрын
Scion wood should be collected during the dormant season. Wrap in moist paper towel or newspaper, and store in a zip-lock bag in the refrigerator. Graft in early spring with any method when trees begin to break dormancy.

I live in the Caribbean and can't find a lot of stuff. I heard electrical tape will do but do you think a white roof sealer paint would work to seal the graft? They are flexible, fill cracks and resist mold.

This one cut slant will give you very poor cambium contact thus results I found out...there should be two more cuts on the side 90 degree from the first cut, this will expose cambium...thus making contact with stock on the side, your method...the cambium of stock lays on top of bark/scion. Also, these grafts on heavy stock takes years to heal in, [ugly] and prone to brake off in wind, best to cut down as you did and graft onto new sprouts the following year..in one season the graft can heal in.

You're right, he only cuts one side. Like he say's, a single back slice. It's easy to see from the close-up of him inserting the scion into the tree.

Hi Tom! i have some 10 year fruit trees (all DWN!) and some are not producing good fruit. Would it be possible to completely cut the tree to the original root stock and graft a different young tree onto it? Thinking a mature root system could help speed things along.

thanks, Dave. I have a beautiful avocado tree which began from seed of the most delicious avocados from my neighbor's tree. I've been told my tree may not bear the same fruit. It's about 8 ft. tall, growing well but I have 2 problems. First to graft and 2nd, we are getting ready to rebuild our home and the tree will need to be moved. What is the best way to accomplish both? I'm afraid the tree will die if we try to transplant. It is happy where it is, close to our front entry and loves when I sing & play my ukulele. No kidding. By the way, I don't know what type of avocados these are but the seed is huge like the fruit, smooth skin which turns purple as it is ready for harvest. This fruit has no strings, smooth & creamy as ice cream and the flavor is buttery, excellent. There is no avocado that even comes close & I've eaten many. Any suggestions?...aloha, Lei Kailua, O'ahu

I am aware that grafting is not genetic engineering, thanks. Arctic apples are a GE plant. You mentioned the patented plant and it being illegal to propagate those without license.

+Dukkha Hush Plant variety patents were established in the early 1900s for the protection of plant breeders. Currently most new plant varieties released by breeders are patented, whether or not the breeding involved GE.

@jonewer You cut just one side because you want the contact of that inside part of the scion to the inner part of the limb your grafting it too.

Hi Dave Wilson Nursery! I just bought a ton of your farmer's market fruit trees! They are such a great deal! BTW I grew an apricot tree from a seed and it is very erratic in fruit production over the years. I believe, probably it is because there is not enough chill. Can I graft a low chill variety on a high chill variety?
@DaveWilsonTrees13 жыл бұрын
@Rottmad You can use either, I like tar.

I have always used Morrison's orchard and pruning seal, but don't see why latex wouldn't work.
@DaveWilsonTrees13 жыл бұрын
@johane127 If the branch broke off completely and it was a month ago your chance of a mend at this point is not good. Japanese maples are grafted plants and will not root well from cuttings in a sand bed. Best to make sure the break is pruned to a clean cut on the tree and try to restructure to more of an upright form so future snow storms won't be as much of a problem.

Hey Dave. Great video. I am a bit of a black thumb but my kid is starting to be curious about grafting. We wanted to know, do you have to keep sighing the same fruit family or can you mix, for example, a pomegranate with an orange, or an avocado with a lemon tree? Is it possible to have a tree that will have a true mix of different fruit, within reason?
@DaveWilsonTrees10 жыл бұрын
Yes, you have to stay in the same family for the most part. You can put peach, nectarine, plum and apricot on the same tree though.

@merdenoms7412 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tutorial, but something I'm a little confused about is that I have read/heard that the cambium layers of the scion wood and the nurse branch should be in contact. Does it not matter that the bark of the scion wood is between the cambium layers of the two? Hope this makes sense.

Dear Tom, Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I would like to know the best season for grafting trees. Can this be done year round? I'm considering grafting Mango trees. Is there anything I need to be aware of? Thanks

Mango grafts best during the warm season. Right now through August is best in green house conditions. If outdoors keep in a 50% shade location and keep the humidity up.

I recently drilled some holes in a good size maple tree and stuck in a few unknown wild apple tree branches. I found the tree growing on the east bank of my driveway. It was struggling for light under many bigger maple trees. I cut some of the maples back, watered it daily and got 5 small green apples, about an inch across. Then the deer got them. The branches I grafted into the holes had nice green leaves that are now dried up . Did I do this too late in spring ? Should this be done in dormancy stage of the trees? Will I get apples on a maple tree ? Thanks. Loved your video!
@DaveWilsonTrees10 жыл бұрын
Sorry, Maple and Apple are not compatible. You may get some early spring growth just due to sap flow but they will not heal in and grow for more than a few weeks. Graft apple to apple and maple to maple. You have to keep it within the family.
