In this video I will be showing you how to grease the front and rear wheel bearings, and drive hub, on my 2007 Yamaha FZ6. This job requires taking off the front and rear wheels which is a good opportunity to check your brake pad wear and clean the swing arm. To grease the wheel bearings and oil seals I used Lucas Red and Tacky lubricant. The manual calls for lithium soap based grease.
Front brake pad and rotor inspection video:

Torque specs:
Front axel bolt torque: 52 ft-lbs
Front axel pinch bolt: 17 ft-lbs (non abs spec) ABS spec is 14 ft-lbs
Front caliper to fork leg bolts: 29 ft-lbs
Rear axel nut: 87 ft-lbs

I think it was one of your other videos but thanks for the nut and bolt tip for the front axel. Went to hardware store and bought 3/4" bolt/nuts to use for 19mm allen. This was after running around to all the stores looking for a 19mm Hex socket which no one carries lol.

With a fine pick you can take off the seal cover and installed it with your fingers. I also pack the grease like you inbetween.

Hi Calvin MC! You are a specialist in Fz6 problems…. Please give me some tips what is the reason behind this noise: clanking noise from the clutch and the front sprocket when its in first gear and I give some throttle. I feel the hit on my left footrest. Sprockets ok, Chain ok, rear bearings ok.

Have the same noise/clunk when releasing clutch in first gear. I am afraid it will be the clutch housing or the discs in my case...

Since it’s too cold to ride, I recently took off my front and rear wheels to check and grease the bearings. How much resistance was there from the bearings when you moved them by hand (with the wheels off)? The front did move freely but not as easily as the rear bearings. Thanks
@Calvinm
@Calvinm 2 жыл бұрын
Both the bearings move easily. You shouldn’t feel any sticky points or fluctuations in the resistance to turn the bearings.

Hmm I just did my tires and my front felt stiffer than rear.

My son is driving 200 miles to pickup a 2005 FZ6 Saturday. I've watched some of your videos, great job, do you have any advice for what he should look for before handing over the money?

Check the idle is at 1300 when warmed up because that has a large impact on the charging system. Check the front brake rotor thickness, they should be between 4.5-5mm, they are expensive to replace if worn out. Inspect the chain and sprocket for wear and stretch. If the bike has over 40k km's (24k miles) ask if the valve lash has been serviced, if not just know it will cost around $800 if done by a shop. Then check the regular things like tires, lights work, no signs of being dropped or repainted in spots. Best of luck, hope the bike looks good!

@@Calvinm Thanks so much for responding. I had already watched your video about inspecting the brakes which is why I reached out to you. I sent my son a link to your channel. The bike has 30,000 miles but was garage kept and regularly serviced. The chain and sprocket are new. A video on what to look for when buying a fz6 would be a good addition to your channel. I can't express enough how much I appreciate people like you that put out good informative content.

Sounds like a solid bike. I actually just filmed a buyers guide and it’ll be posted in a week! Thanks for the kind comment, really appreciate it. 👍

@@Calvinm Thanks Calvin, he did in fact purchase the bike and is probably halfway home. The guy had all the service records and a valve adjustment was done at around 27,000 miles. He was able to do a 30 minute test drive and the only thing unusual to him was the friction zone on the clutch lever was close to full release. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. He has only owned 2 motorcycles, a Honda Rebel and a Honda Magna (which was a great bike). Both were purchased used. Other than the friction zone he was unfamiliar with, he said the bike performed fantastic. Negotiated to $2,500 from $3,000. Without actually seeing the bike I think he did well.

@@citizengoodman8023 I have a 2010 FZ6. It's common on the FZ6 to have the friction zone close to full release.

Should be noted that if you remove the dust seals you have to replace them, same with bearings.

So you think standard lithium grease is ok on rubber ❔
@Calvinm
@Calvinm 3 жыл бұрын
The lithium grease is ok on rubber but I believe regular white lithium grease isn't "extreme pressure (EP)" rated. Yamaha seems to want this EP rating for this grease.

Calvin MC I will always remember this good to know

@@Calvinm The color of the grease is just what the manufacturer colored it. Here in Finland I looked around and found EP rated green grease that was suitable and in the end ended up picking up EP rated lithium grease that was cream yellowish-white. For the wheel parts especially look for it's ability to resist weather (water), ability to cling to surfaces and high speed rotation along with EP rating.
