Me and my two oldest daughters planted one at my mother in-laws house . A storm came by an knocked two big limbs off . I grabbed them two bad boys and put them in a bucket of water for 25 days and it grew beautiful pink roots . Ready for the dirt.

I love weeping willow trees! They have been one of my favorites trees for years! With a weeping willow tree, you can also use their branches to make a natural rooting agent! Simply cut a branch into small pieces about the size of your pinky finger. Soak the cut pieces in hot to warm water for 24 hour. The fluid left over acts as a rooting agent, also it's probably a decent fertilizer, and I saw this because I have helped dying plants and broken plants! Simply take a cutting of nearly any plant, cut any damage off using a sharp pair of scissors, dip into the willow fluid made from soaking willow branch pieces and wallah! A willow tree is a beautiful tree with many uses! Great tree!

@@carrasco2011sc my recommendation would be to contact a botanist or your local garden center and ask them! My oppinion would say they need a decent amount of room but that's just my oppinion! However I hear that a willow requires 50 to 80 feet for the roots and that they can grow up to 50 feet tall! That said if you can manage to get one growing perhaps on the outer edge of your property but I would say at least 25 to 30 feet away and preferably as far from your plumbing, septic, and drain lines! They now have dwarf versions out perhaps you could return and ask for a dwarf version if your yard isnt large enough! I can tell you this though, I wish I had one! I'm now wondering if the roots can shoot out 50 feet does that mean 50 foot radius so 25 ft each way from the tree! Everything I see says keep 50 feet away but my thought is 25 feet each direction from the center of the tree but I'm no Botanist!

We have a weeping willow in our yard and have noticed, plus we looked into the fact that it’s the last tree of the season to drop its leaves in early winter and the first tree to bud out again in late winter right before early spring. Keeps its leaves longer than any other tree.

We get the giant willow aphid new to our country which doesn’t kill the tree but then attracts a lot of wasps. So unsure if you have it there but something to be aware of if you have kids nearby. Also some of them self seed easily. But I’m saying that we’re happily growing one in the right spot… it looks great in the landscape!

We used them as whips -- of course we weren't mean with them. I remember as a small boy standing in them and spinning around with all the branches raining down on me. I will never forget that. There was a rock under it and I picked it up and there was bunch of ladybugs under it. Such a pity that enormous tree got blown down in a hurricane (1977?). If they planted another one then, it would be almost full sized by now. That was 43-ish years ago.

I have two landscapes I care for that have weeping willows. One is in a neighboring lawn nearly a foot in diameter with large limbs over the street and neighbors driveway. The other in a back lawn in an expensive neighborhood and a complete nuisance. IMHO the only good place for a full size variety would be on a farm pond. I would never plant on a residential lot of any size.

How old is this tree? I planted a 6 foot willow last year in June and the trunk is about as thick as my middle finger. The tree looks healthy and this year I noticed that the green of the trunk is starting to fade so I'm really looking forward to that wooden trunk. The tree is now between 8 and 9 feet tall. When will the trunk start to thicken?

Are willows a problem around PVC sewers, or just porous older lines? Also, can the roots get into a modern concrete block basement? If I chose to plant near my house, what would a fairly safe distance be? Finally, where can I purchase a beautifully pruned tree like in the video, with shipping to PA?

I have a thriving young weeping willow that’s about 3 years old. I planted it in my front yard and spaced it far enough away from the house, allowing full growth without being too close or too far away. The problem is, no one educated me on how the roots kinda run across the ground and grow like Bermuda grass, if you will. Over time I think the roots will destroy my sidewalk. My question is, how likely is it that the tree will survive if I have a spade truck come in and move it? I have 3.5 acres of nothing grass and this tree will be beautiful, no matter where I put it. Looking forward to your response. Thanks.

That was my big question -- drought tolerant. They naturally grow along rivers; don't they? I want to put one in an small town downtown area off of Main Street. I think it would be fabulous there. We have no other trees remotely like that downtown. The dirt there is terrible so I don't think it will get full sized but just the same perhaps there are some smaller varieties we can purchase to make sure it doesn't become a problem.

Okay I just got a good deal on a willow and my goal for it is to keep it small as a shaded tree for a chair on my patio. I have read up on it and now I am concerned after reading that it is a huge growing tree. My neighbor has one that is planted in ground but stays small. If I keep pruning it every year will it stay consistent at a manageable size.

Hi, I just subscribed. A question about my willow tree if you dont mind. It has been planted for just over a year. It actually virtually died last winter but has come back to life and had a growth spurt. The branches are touching the ground. There is barely any trunk without a branch coming off it. The tree is about 4ft tall. Do you think I should lightly prune it or cut some branches off or just leave it alone. I look forward to your reply

All my life I always wanted nothing more than a weeping willow whenever I bought my first house. Well, I bought my house 3 years ago and put an order in for a weeping willow at the local nursery. As I waited for it to come, I began to do research on the tree so I'd know how to care for it. As it turns out (and as you clearly explained in the video) they cannot be planted near your house and sewer lines because of the way the roots spread out looking for water. I was incredibly bummed. Now, whenever I drive around the city and see people with willows on their small front lawns, I think to myself, "Is there a way to plants these trees within 15 ft of a house that I'm not aware of? Is there some sort of method that can be used to keep the roots from doing damage?" The only thing I could think of is maybe pouring a concrete wall around the tree several feet deep (of course it would not have a floor and the roots could run deep as they wanted). But, that would be a lot of trouble to go through just to have a weeping willow.

@alltheworldswonders4926
@alltheworldswonders4926 5 жыл бұрын
In my experience with gardening around trees I've learned that roots actually seek out walls/barrier above/in the ground. When it rains, the water condenses and runs down the walls of the garden, making those areas wetter which in turn attracts tree roots. I've dug out sooo many roots over the years and they follow my border walls. Imo barriers are also impractical because they degrade so easily in the dirt

Great video. I believe my young willow is too top heavy. When I remove the stakes holding it up, it leans so much to one side or the other that I'm afraid it will damage the trunk. Is pruning it (in mid may) the answer? Also, I have accidentally let the mulch pile up around the base. When I raked it back, I noticed little roots starting to grow above ground (where the mulch was). Should I do anything beyond raking back the mulch? Thanks!

my moms always wanted one, now that we just got some acres I think we should get a bunch. I was under the impression they were difficult and needed to be near a ground water source. With that in mind is near a natural creek a good place to put them?

Hey Jim, locally our only place to get weeping willows got hit with drift from the neighbors fields so they couldn't sell any of their trees and won't get any more until Spring, me and my wife decided to try to grow some from cuttings from the local park weeping willow. I have put them in a mason jar full of water about half their depth. Should I wait until spring to plant them, or plant them maybe later in the fall. We are in southwest nebraska fyi, thank you in advance!

Im kind of freaking out. I just purchased a weeping willow and had it installed yesterday 12/20/19. The tree is 15-17ft away from the house with a clearance from all sidewalks about 14-15ft away... Should I remove this tree immediately!?

No, I kept it in place. I’ve been reading if I train the roots by keeping it watered it wont be a problem with its roots seeking for water.

+Mi Lu As long as it isn't a tiny tree, it shouldn't be a problem planting where you are in the winter.
