Most people use Inkbird humidity controllers to grow mushrooms. But I think there is an alternative viable method. I believe you can grow good mushroom by using an Inkbird CO2 controller. The Inkbird ICC-500T had a CO2 brobe that connects to the controller and can control the co2 levels up and down providing you connect the correct equipment. When the CO2 levels rises in your mushroom fruiting chamber, the Inkbird detects this, and turns the extractor fan on to draw in fresh air. Fresh air exchange is important when growing mushrooms, and this device solves this problem.
I was able to grow a great flush of mushrooms using this sensor. The spores did clog the fan at the end, so maybe some improvements need to be done on that front.

The C02 controller you linked to cost $250 (CAD). You can build an entire Martha tent setup for that. There's no reason to fruit oyster mushrooms in a tub if you can't do it for cheap.

Also this device is not necessary if you drill holes right above the line of substrate or paralyte CO2 is heavier than most gases that will be in there so it will leak out the bottom holes due to gravity alone drill a couple holes save a bunch of money

I just grew my first batch last week, ate several grams in total here and there. Went great! Had euphoria, nice visuals. I must have gotten cocky or taken it for granted because a day ago I decided to eat 7 grams. I got zero visuals, its like the mushroom decided not to entertain me and wanted to hammer me. I laid in my bed and was fighting it, it was telling me I'm a bad person and that everyone hates me. That I should self delete. I gave in to it and it still was hammering me, being mean as hell. I have no suicidal thoughts when sober, i want to stick around, grow old, and be here for my 3 little girls so it felt like it was the mushroom telling me those things or something. I now fear and respect the mushroom.

depends on the ratio of substrate:volume in the room. A large room with a small number of grow bags wont need as many air exchanges as a small room with a large number of grow bags. The common air exchange rate is considered around 6-8 i believe.

When drilling holes in tote with a hole saw, run the drill in reverse at low speed. Then the teeth of the saw will NOT catch on the tote edge and break the tote. The friction of the hole saw will melt and cut the hole. You will get a much cleaner hole in the tote. Also much safer and will NOT break the tote!

Big thumbs up for stressing the importance of respiratory protection. I work with urethane paints from time to time and things like that are an absolute must. Just one note, though - facial hair can significantly degrade the quality of the seal to your face. Some types exist that don't need a tight seal. They use a hood with a constant positive pressure air supply. Usually that's via a stupidly expensive belt mounted fan/filter unit (called a PAPR - around 1500-2000 USD) but the hoods and hoses are fairly inexpensive, long lasting, and can be fed by any fresh air source (often treated compressed air in paint shops but I'm sure it would be trivial to set something up with a fan and duct drawing from outside your chamber for very low cost)

Since the density of CO2 (1.842 kg/m3) is significantly higher than air (1.205 kg/m3) @NTP, and with the fruiting shrooms generating CO2, the inlet fresh air holes should have been located on the top of the container with the exhaust fan being located on the bottom. This would reduce the amount of fresh air required for interchange keeping the humidity higher as well. Just an observation from a chemical engineer, lolz.

@@OakandSpore When the fan is off you 'effectively' have a closed container barring external air currents. As CO2 is generated it will fill the lower portion of the container first and the CO2 concentration gradient will increase as you rise in the box. This is similar to the temperature gradients that you have noticed and demonstrated in your fruiting rooms floor to ceiling. Hot air is less dense than cold air - hence it rises. Now, some CO2 will diffuse to the outside air through the multiple small holes at the bottom of the container when the fan is off via diffusion, but the fact that you set the CO2 monitor to 650 cycling down to 600 makes me wonder what the concentration was at the top and the bottom of the container. I have seen other videos where the CO2 concentration is 5000+ ppm. I wish we had a real life problem like this to solve when I was taking fluid dynamics many years ago. Love your channel and what you're doing and just want you to think about CO2 being more dense than fresh air the same way cold air is too hot. Air @ 20C is 1.204 kg/m3 & air @ 15C is 1.225 kg/m3. The relative difference in density is far more pronounced for CO2 to fresh air than it is for a 5C temperature difference. Just some food for thought.

From GordoTek, run the drill in reverse, also you could kinda of preheat it with heat gun (or a hair dryer). In my opinion (non tested yet) i think that you could use Adhesive Tape (the one you use in the office for papers or for packaging crates), and cover the part you are gonna drill... with all of that, I hope that you don't get another broken tub

@@dylanminer3728 you meant to keep the air exchange while keeping out any undesirebles? if that's the case then your totally right :). But What I meant was before the drilling was done, in order to avoid getting cracks in the plastic: Like you select the place where your're gonna drill, then you cover the whole area before drilling (it will probably take a like 6 or more strips of the wide packaging tape, and then you set your power drill to REVERSE and proceed to drill in a way the total circumference you're cutting is within the covered area by the tape, with some luck no cracks would appear or spread

Then I had to mess with the placement of the sensor to keep it away from any fog because the first thing it did was saturate and error out. I'll be moving to an Omega brand heated probe as soon as I can. I do a ton of Arduino-type stuff, so a total wireless solution isn't far down the road.

I think it'd be better to have the fan create positive pressure in the chamber vs your negative pressure setup. Little pc fans are really not made to get gunked up with spores and all that humidity - and worst case scenario, that can start a fire. Another benefit of positive pressure is you could potentially vent the spores outside.
