My Grandfather used to put copper tubing for plumbing over the spears to block out light. He did it also on green onions and leeks for extra long white parts. My father used PCV plastic plumbing tube, it is cheaper. Just an old timer trick

A friend gave me a seedling and told me it was dill. I had no previous gardening experience. The dill never turned into dill. The next year, in the spring I saw a spear coming up and I realized it was an aspargus. 😃 I was so happy. Well, fast forward a few years I got lots of spears coming up and my favorite way to eat aspargus is raw. I break the spears off and nibble away as I garden. After tasting freshly harvested aspargus from my garden I can never buy aspargus at the store anymore. they never taste the same. :/ tku for this video.

Thank you I grew everything I recently found some in a box at a dollar store never planted it ever ,I did so hey try those cheap crowns at end of growing season but don’t be afraid of cheap dollar store crown mine came out beautiful still growing beautiful so tender my husband picks and he comes in with nothing they were so tender I just ate them ,I laugh and weight a few days I get some to eat thanks the seed was what I was wanting to plant not many people grow them in Louisiana but I am a got to try it at least once happy gardening

Except, what happened between frond trees to harvesting 1 foot spears?? Did the trees die back? Did the fronds fall off? 🤔 Where did the trees/fronds go? I have searched other videos on YT and can not find the answer. I am planning where to plant my asparagus, but I wanted to know how big they grow, how tall, how much space will be required? When you showed the harvesting, they looked very different from when growing.

After watching your video I think they received too much water. Another good way to cook: Equal amounts of bacon grease, soy and brown sugar--YUMYUM!

I really love watching your videos. They are so informative and your narration is so easy to listen to that I have really learned a lot from them. I have been able to take a lot of notes as you cover everything so thoroughly. I want to thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Here is my husband's favorite way to eat asparagus... I have some very large cookie trays (I believe they're called half-sheet), anyways after I have covered the cookie sheet with some aluminum foil, I will take some thick center-cut pork chops and brown them really well on all sides in some olive oil (In my cast-iron skillet), with some salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder, I place them at one end of the foil-lined cookie sheet. Then I wash and quarter some Red Northern and Yukon gold baby potatoes, place them in a bowl, cut up some onions (either large dice or half-moon slivers), and place them into the bowl with the potatoes. To the potatoes, I add some salt, pepper, and some diced fresh rosemary from the garden, and toss with some olive oil. These potatoes are placed at the opposite end of the cookie sheet from the pork shops. I cover them with aluminum foil lightly and oven cook them at 400 degrees for about 20-25 minutes. While those are cooking, I will wash and snap the asparagus and get them ready (I always freeze the hard ends for our homemade dog food). When the timer goes off for the oven I will take out the cookie sheet and place the asparagus in the center, between the meat and potatoes. I coat the asparagus really well with the oily broth that forms from the meat and potatoes. Then cover the cookie sheet once more (very lightly) and put the food back into the oven for about 5-10 minutes, at which point I remove the aluminum foil cover and set the oven to broil for another 5-10 minutes to brown the potatoes a bit more. Remove from the oven for a fantastic one-sheet meal of pork chops, roasted potatoes, and asparagus. YUM.!!

Thank you for the video. I am in my first year from seed indoors. They're still so long, skinny and fern looking. I suspect the few that are together would be happier in a larger pot with room. Also, your voice is simply lovely. Very comforting. You should be recording audio books 😘

I have very successfully grown asparagus in seed trays,their roots grow sideways so work well, add extra compost if needed, if you would like thick spears try Connovers Colosal, do watch out for asparagus beetle they are Bright red you must at all cost remove them!! Look on line how to deal with them

OMG i love your voice and accent! Have you thought about reading children's stories? I always read or let my child read at night before bed time but for those children who have problems sleeping, your voice over would be so calming. First time clicking on one of you videos. We are currently in the process of preparing our bed for our seeded asparagus. Our Rhubarb is doing great so thought we would take this on too as a long investment project on a patch border that is neglected, mainly because of the poor clay soil content. We just dug it all out. We learnt that the plant came from swampy sandy water. Indirect sunlight but loves the warmth. Wish us luck as it is south side but along a fence! We have 2 bags of sand for 4 plants. Each plant can take up 2 ft. I am going to add some clay soil back with the sand, organic compost and refined store compost. Peat is banned in the UK i think so i am going to add some pearlite. what will happen, we don't know! lol

Very good info .In depth too! I've been growing asparagus for 3 years now only from seed .I will start eating next year...as far as staking them up, I do not ...I let them lay where they lay because I have enough space ...If you plant them next to other stuff , then yes I would stake them , like in a raised bed or such...I remember after a bad wind storm, my corn would get blown over...I used to stand them back up ,but learned later that they would stand themselves back up.. I don't think asparagus is like that...I'm still testing them...Anyways, Great video and info!

Here in New Mexico, Green Chilie Capitol of the U.S., where we are known for our green chilie harvest every year, what I do is chop up asparagus in bite-sized pieces and cook them right in my green or red chilie stew. They can be added to spaghetti sauce and just about any casserole. Get creative the smaller the pieces are cut the less visible it becomes. Out of sight out of mind is a great way to easily fool some children who dislike eating anything green or veggies of any kind. I can't wait to see how they progress! We have a heavy deer population but I might try transplanting these into an unprotected area to keep the fenced Garden for veggies the deer would surely devour. I had 5 viable starts from seedlings last fall which are in the fenced area. Not sure yet if they will come back up because they were started so late in the season. Didn't realize when I started them how much space they need! Yikes! Will let you know how things go!

leave those weeds in your asparagus patch alone. the asparagus will pop up before weeds and other plants so they are easier to harvest. after harvesting is done, let the weeds grow. plants form a symbiosis with each other and the more roots that are in the soil, the stronger your asparagus will grow in the spring. Plants "competing" for nutrients only happens in commercial crops or potted plants with sterile soil. In natural soil, plants share nutrients via mycorrhizal fungi.

Great video! One Question remained for me.... The taller growth shown (where it was staked or fenced), is that just for the first year to establish the plants? I watched the video twice and never fully understood why it was left to grow that tall before harvesting. I’m starting my bed this spring and plan to use 2 year crowns so wasn’t sure if I needed to leave that much growth for the 2 year old plants. I will probably let some grow to full height to get the seeds but wasn’t sure.

🌱 I started some from seeds last year and this year they are already sending their first real shoots! They are at least a foot tall. I know we still can't touch them , ideally not till the year after next. They seen to do very well here so I might make a very large area for them so we can sell our surplus, or can it, or both. People comment on how patient I am, but I am watering the garden anyway and for us, the few years of nurturing them will last us the rest of our lives as we are 55+. (When we are older the years seem to go by much faster.) This winter seems to have sped by faster than any I can remember! Waiting another 2 years till we can harvest our asparagus really isn't very long considering how many years they will pay us back 🌱 By the way.. We are expecting several nights under 30 degrees next week, will they need to be covered?

Remember a large plot could mean you will have to tread on the bed to remove weeds, make them long,so you can reach to hand weed!

After you cut/snap off a shoot...does it grow back? Does it die? Does it grow back thinner? This is my biggest question that I can't find an answer to.

It grows back from the same exact stalk? I know other stalks will grow from the same 'crown' root...but I want to make sure that precisely the stalks that are cut grow back, and wondering if they grow back thinner or different in any other way. Thank you

When I cut a stalk, the bottom part (attached to the crown), dies and turns brown by the end of the growing season. I remove it. I don't typically cut all of my stalks and so some grow into a fern at which I cut in the late fall or winter. The next spring, they grow back bigger than the previous year. My newer crowns produce skinny stalks and my oldest crown produces thick stalks. Hope that helps.

I've been harvesting since I was a kid. It grew along the railroad next to our house. You cut it just below the soil so that it will regrow. If you snap it or cut it above the soil that shoot will no longer grow.

I was told if you break the asparagus off down really low, kinda wiggle and snap it off low at the crown, it will stimulate the asparagus to grow my spears. Don't know if it's true, but there ya go! Lol!

You dont have to wiggle it of anything. After the third year just cut off low and the crown will be like "I need another stock, better grown one". Dont harvest early or the crown will not have the energy to make more and it wont return the next year.

Hi, I have not experienced it personally, but if I needed to change the wood, I'd just chop it out and build another frame around the soil. It would not damage the plant because I would not touch the soil, just the wood.

A little may but the extensive root system of the asparagus should keep most of it intact. Just be careful not to knock it around much. It may be easier to do this in the fall/winter when you have cut back your fronds.

Thank you very much. Do you think that it's significantly better to grow asparagus in a raised bed than to dig a hole in the ground and fill it with goodies and coconut coir from now until the spring when I can plant the asparagus? Surely it must be too late to plant now (I live in Nova Scotia).

I would wait until late winter/early spring to move it around. I have enjoyed growing asparagus in raised beds and in the ground. If you grow in the ground, give them plenty of room to spread, if that is your wish. Otherwise, you should grow in a bed to keep them contained.

Something is causing my asparagus leaves to dry and fall off and the branches to yellow and die off. I don't know what is causing it to die and the stem is just standing alone without its ferns. Please can you help me figure out what's wrong and what to do?? There's a bug that's around but isn't an asparagus beetle its Grey and black on its head and its got two red dots on its wings. I haven't been able to identify it yet either. So I'm not sure its even hurting my asparagus plants. I almost killed my asparagus plants by not watering it for a long time in the beginning of summer but it made it. But now there's these issues and I don't know what's wrong and how to fix it!?

just throw them out there! NO NEED TO BABY SET EM > THEY DO JUST FINE> DAM SQUIRREL CAN PLANT EM ! 8 YRS NOW AND I MOW OVER THEM, COME RITE BACK! You got to have a lot of them IF YOU WANT TO EAT EM> JERSEY KNIGHTS> I THINK THEY LOVE GRASS
