My arms are aching after watching you lift that pot for the entire length of the video! Great channel, I’ve learned a lot. Thanks.

Thanks Jim. Great video. I just put in 40 encores here as part of a larger project so I'm glad to have found this.

I have about 15 of these in my garden. They are nice, but I’m looking to replace them with the Autumn Lilac. They look great up against the white varieties.

I’ve probably watched this video 5 times in the last few days- finally pulled the trigger and planted 3 Autumn Royalty out in front of my house this morning! I’m excited to see what they do!

4 years later, how have they done? I want to get them for front of my house zone 6.

@@cnrmoose They’ve done amazingly well! I wound up planting 8 of them. 5 did get bit back by a late frost this year, so they only have a handful of blooms on them. 😔 But the other 3 who were a more protected corner near the front porch are perfect. Now, I will say that only those 3 protected ones have reached the full height on the tag of about 5 feet. The others who are more exposed to the sun, wind, etc are not as tall. They’re probably 3.5 feet tall. I do hope they get a bit taller over time, but even if they don’t, that’s okay. When they’re absolutely covered in blooms like they’ve been in the last 2 springs, they’re an absolute showstopper!!! Probably the most beautiful spring bushes in my yard.

@@cnrmoose I also planted 2 autumn lilac encore azaleas the same year. My son actually won them in a Jim Putnam giveaway at our local Home Depot several years ago!!! So my son who was 9 at the time chose the autumn lilac color. I didn’t know how I would like the paler purple flower, but they are absolutely gorgeous. They’re also slightly more protected- they’re at the bottom of our deck stairs (one on each side), so the frost didn’t get them either. My son chose that spot himself, so great choice on his part!! (The five autumn royalties that the frost got are foundation plants along the east side of my house.) So my advice would be either plant them in at area that will be protected from that last annoying frost that always seems to hit after things begin to bud out if that happens in your area… or be better than me at covering your plants when that happens! (In my defense, my daughter had a late late varsity soccer game far away that evening, so I covered nothing… but I’m still beating myself up over it! My 5 azaleas, 3 gardenias, and 3 of my 5 endless summer hydrangeas were damaged by that dang frost and don’t look like they’ll bloom well this spring. Dang it! 😖) Also, I’m in Zone 7B- tiny town in North GA about an hour south of Chattanooga, TN and an hour north of Atlanta. I’m not sure about Zone 6, but the encore azaleas do fantastically well in 7B.

Awesome video!! thank you so much! i bought some small azaleas, i planted one and it was in full sun (im in san diego BTW) and it looked like it was struggling. Welp, i took it back out of the ground and when i went to put in back into a pot with some new soil, i noticed that it looked like it had divided into 3 separate plants! based on the root ball?! idk if thats how they multiply but now ive got THREE when originally bought one from the store. I placed them in a half sun and shade spot while they recover from where i had them and they are all growing new foliage. I used potting soil with chicken manure in it (i hope thats ok?) Keep these videos coming their great and VERY informative! = )

Yes when they first introduced encores I bought several different varieties to see how they would grow. NONE of them survived life at my house except Autumn Royalty. It's still here 20? years later 4 foot tall and doing great and surviving all the terrible years of drought. Cannot say that of the others; embers, twist, etc. Maybe just bad luck but I highly recommend Autumn Royalty.

I bought gallon pots. Just planted. Should I prune after very first bloom? or wait until they are better established?

This is one of the best videos I have ever seen on azaleas. I am new at this an the information is very helpful to me. I may replace 2 crape myrtle trees with them.

Hi Jim! Thank you for uploading all of these very informative videos! I am a new gardener in North Carolina and have been learning a lot from your videos. I have two questions for you! First, where can I buy the soil conditioner you use for clay soils? And second, how far away from my house would you recommend planting encore azaleas? I am looking to plant one or two next to a window, like you suggested. However, I am wondering how far away from the structure of the house it is safe to plant? The other concern is that my neighbors are pretty close, our houses are only about 14ft apart. Thank you in advance for you help!
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 жыл бұрын
+Stephanie Barickman It would depend on the variety. The ones that get three feet wide, two feet away would be fine. The ones that get five feet wide, you will need them three feet away

Great video. I just purchased a dozen of these in 1g from Lowes at a heavy clearance. I live in zone 9b about 10 minutes from the gulf of Mexico in Florida. We get extreme heat and moderate rainfall. I will try to shade these in the afternoons. You say pine straw, is that just pine needles? Thanks
@olsonlr
@olsonlr 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, Pine straw = pine needles. Slightly acidic as well, just the way azaleas like it.

What to do if overwatered and they just started to turn brown and flowers are dried up to crisp and falling off?

Hi Jim, Great video... one problem I have been having... I have the autumn royalty as they too were my favorite. Whenever they bloom they only bloom in the inside of the plant... they will be blooming like crazy but only in the middle so all the green foliage covers the blooms. I tried trimming them back a little and that didnt seem to help. Is there something I am doing to cause this or something I can do to fix it? Thanks so much for the help!

I know you left this comment a long time ago but I wonder if the deer are eating your exterior blooms. I live in town but I still have to cage mine because the deer love them so much. I only ever got a few blooms on mine that they missed.
