That's one thing I really appreciate about going to the local grocery store/garden center. They usually sell plants most popular in the area you live and that do best, so you don't have to do exhausting research about suitability for the particular area you live in before you buy as you would have to if shopping online.

Thank you so much. I just bought a Persian Lilac from Lowes and was wondering exactly where to plant it. Your tip about not hedging it in was very helpful. I was about to put it on the edge of a garden near a bush but now I’m going to put it out in the open to where it can make a bit of a beatific privacy fence between my neighbor and I.

Great video. Yours look like something out of a magazine, they are soooo glorious . Mine are 3 years in the fround, bought them from a very good reputable nursery. Sadly, every year they come up to the blossom stage and then we get a freeze (end of May). So, I have lost the blooms thus far. But this year I decided to cover them every night when temps drop to the freezing point. Thus far they are OK! I see a lot of suckers around the base. looking healthy actually. That is why I checked online to find out if the suckers were good or bad. WEW!!! Glad I did not cut them off!!! Hopefully this year I will succeed and the blooms will stay alive. PS I live in Northern AZ. 6700 elevation. short growing season, but hot and dry summers.

Hello from Romania and thank you for sharing with us how to care for lilacs. I have learned a lot from your video. I have bought a Beauty of Moscow about one foot tall this spring and attempted to plant it in my garden. It has struggled a lot so I moved it to a pot in a more sunny place. I has not grown almost at all, and the summer was verry hot and dry. To top it off it rained with big hail one night and the hail shredded the few struggling leaves. But it is still alive! Now that fall is aproaching and temperatures are dropping a bit I see a couple of buds at the bottom of it. What can I do to help it? By the way I am in a 7b zone.
@gardenwiseadventures
@gardenwiseadventures Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching my videos! Once it gets a bit cooler, try planting it in an area where it gets sun and where the soil drains well. Lilacs don't like to sit where it stays wet. Water it when the soil starts to dry out a bit until the ground freezes. If your soil does not freeze, cut back on watering over the winter and only water if the soil is dry, unfrozen and the temperatures warm up. Next spring only water if the soil has dried out. Lilacs don't like wet soil. Don't fertilize or amend the soil. Lilacs trive in poor soils. I am hoping it survives for you! Beauty of Moscow is a gorgeous Lilac!

So pretty. I bought the PW boomerang dark purple lilac this year...but I"m in zone 9b. Oh no! It wasn't in bloom when I purchased it this late spring. It never flowered all spring and summer. It looks very healthy but from what you said it is too warm here, I was hoping next year it would give me something. THoughts?
@gardenwiseadventures

It is likely that your winters are too warm. Lilacs need a good amount of winter chill to bloom. When I lived in Southern California I grew Chaste Trees in place of Lilacs. They didn't smell the same, but they had the beautiful blooms.

Your lilac trees are beautiful! Thank you for the informative video. We just planted ours yesterday and it’s a small plant purchased from Home Depot. I want to put some fertilizer since it’s new in the ground, do you know which one I could use?
@gardenwiseadventures
@gardenwiseadventures 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't add any fertilizer when you plant it unless your soil is really sandy. I would even just consider adding a little bit of compost rather than fertilizer at that point. If you have clay or loam soils, your lilac won't need any fertilizer. I am excited for it to grow for you. They are amazing plants!

I temporarily put them together in a large pot the first year because they were so little. Last October I separated them into their own huge planters (I'n in Brooklyn, zone 7B). They've thrived and grown incredibly. and I thought I saw flower buds in January, but sadly not a single bloom! They get full Southern exposure. Is it because they were transplanted last October?

I’m in North Dakota and i love the blooming of these in June, is it normal for them to only do it for like a month? Ive noticed that’s what they do? Also how fast do they grow? I moved into a new house and i want to grow them so bad around like yours pretty much. We’ve got trees that will be our fence in like 5-10 years. So maybe I can get a little jump on it with lilacs 😍🥰

Lilacs are gorgeous! They grow pretty quickly too. You should have full sized hedges within 3 years. Unfortunately most of them only bloom once in the spring. There are smaller reblooming varieties, but the second bloom isn't as spectacular. Those varieties have smaller flowers.

You can do it either way, but the best way is to take it down to soil level. That way thw new branches will start growing from the soil. If you cut it part way down, you will get more growth along the stem that you cut.

Absolutely stunning. I live in Virginia. My lilac bloomed just few blooms in April and now no more . I see in others gardens they r still in full bloom. What should I do? How do I identify suckers?
@gardenwiseadventures
@gardenwiseadventures 2 жыл бұрын
Not getting flowers is so frustrating! I am sorry you didn't see any! Make sure if you prune your lilac that you only prune right after it finishes blooming. It forms the buds for next years growth in the summer. If you prune later than that, you prune off the next years flowers. Suckers are the smaller branches that grow from the base of the plant and will have the same typenof leaves as the top. Suckers can be good because they will replace any of the larger branches that you need to remove.

I'm trying to grow two lilacs in Anaheim, California... One in a pot and one in the ground. The one in the ground is taller but barely holding on. The one in the pot is leafing out but also has a ton of suckers. I'm curious if it's the medium that's the difference, or if it's the fact that the potted one was shipped from a nursery, while the other was from Lowes.

Unfortunately lilacs do not get enough cold over the winter to do well in California. When I lived in the Thousand Oaks area I grew Chaste Trees (Vitex Agnus Castus) in place of lilacs. They don't smellasgood,but they are just as pretty and grow well in California.

I planted 5 Miss Kim lilacs in my open yard last May. They are in full open sun, zone 6. They were the typical size from the nursery, a little less than knee height and I watered them weekly and during dry spells but the leaves all curled up and looked brown with spots by the time the heat of summer arrived. I'm not sure if they're going to grow well or what caused that. Too much water, not enough? Scorch? I gave them 2-3 gallons of water each in the mornings. I also want them to grow fairly quickly but not sure if lilacs were the right choice. My yard constantly has deer so it's been difficult to find the right choices.

I am wondering if they got too much water. Watch them this year and only water them deeply once the ground is dry down to your first knuckle. Also, mulch around them 3" to 4". That really helped mine.

Hello, I have a quart sized lilac from Mackinac Island in Michigan. When should I put it in the ground?
@gardenwiseadventures
@gardenwiseadventures 2 жыл бұрын
You can put it in the ground as long as the soil isn't too frozen to dig and if the lilac is dormant if you are in a cold winter climate. If the lilac still has leaves on it and has a chance to freeze, keep it in an area where it won't freeze and wait until spring to plant it.

I bought a sensational lilac a couple months ago and planted it in the front yard about five feet away from my west facing house so it doesn't see direct sunlight until just afternoon or maybe one o'clock. But it's only about three feet tall max so still very small and young. It's not suffering for water, but despite new growth, the leaves all look sad, green but sad and droopy. Then it only gets about four or five hours of direct sunlight before the sun sets behind huge bluff in front of me to the west (I live just below HAFB to the west). I'm trying to find a suitable permanent location somewhere to transplant it where it can get more direct sunlight, but can you advise me more about whether it will be ok where I currently have it? Is your house west facing, too? That last one you showed by the gate seems like it only gets afternoon sun and it's huge! But maybe that gate is to the northwest? I really want to keep my lilac where it is, so I guess I want to know based on your experience whether it will be fine in the morning shade. Or is moving an absolute must? Thanks!

Thanks for wqtching my video! The lilac I have in front of my house is facing west, but it gets at least 8 hours of sun a day because of where it is. It does get sunlight starting around 10 am. because it is off to the side of my house. The ones in the back get around 6 hours of light and are smaller and lankier, but still flower. If I were you, i would try and find an area with more sunlight if at all possible as your lilac will do much better.

@gardenwiseadventures
@gardenwiseadventures 2 жыл бұрын
I thought so too for the first several year with my lilacs. They do fine with that type of pruning, but the branches steadily decline and the flowers end up out further on the older branches. You need to gradually replace the older branches by removing them. That encourages new branches to form which makes for better flowering.
