As a Chef, few vegetables are better than beets. A roasted beet salad with goat cheese, walnuts, olive oil and balsamic vinegar is one of life‘s great pleasures. Looking forward to growing my own home! Thanks for the tips.

My beets didn't do anything in our last cool season here in S. Florida. I did a soil test, through Unibest. I found that my "Mel's Mix" soil was extremely deficient in both potassium and nitrogen. My mistake is that I didn't add as much fresh compost as I normally do. This growing guide confirms what I knew about beets and nitrogen. I'm sure not having potassium might have been a small part of the problem as well. Thanks for the info!

2 gardening seasons of trying to grow beets in northern Wisconsin. All I got was leaves and no bulbs. My Master-Gardener friend told me my soil was probably too high in nitrogen and too low in phosphorus. We had the soil tested AND it's too high in phosphorus and low in nitrogen. We applied the recommended amount of nitrogen to the whole garden; hopefully this corrects the problem and Luke is right!!

Just rediscovered beets. Did not like them as a kid [who does?] and spent my whole life avoiding them. Tried some the other day and wow, I was missing out. Now I try to include them as often as I can. Been eating beet microgreens, but decided to try to grow all the way. Great video

Grew golden beets they were very good ! Going to try a crop of red for winter.Had grown parsley and only used so much so we turned the rest into the soil. Hopefully this crop will be even better also added some sand to make the soil to make the soil easier for them to expand. I just love beet greens too ! 😊

I just put my beets down a few days ago and they're popping up! I'm in SW PA and my soil is kind of crappy (this is my first garden) but I'm hoping to get a few good ones! I love a beer roasted in the oven! YUMMY!!

Having little twigs and pieces of wood in your compost is great, it helps aerate the soil and retains moisture like perlite. Just avoid bigger pieces of wood or stones, particularly for root crops as they can damage the vegetables as they grow.

I appreciate all the details in your how-to's , Luke :) . Hello from western WI btw. . I am wondering if, on the topic of keeping even moisture levels for the beets ( and most other crops ), if mulches are recommended for beets. Since it should work in our climate and am usually on more clay than sand soils ( am moving again ), I plan on doing the mulching with compost ( turns out it counts, as a soil covering ) as Charles Dowding and other no-dig & no-till growers do . Richard Perkins & Singing Frogs Farm being my other main inspirations along w principles of the back-to-eden methodology. In our climate, hay, grass or wood chips being my other mulch choices. If u ever have knowledge of whether or not mulches at all ( besides compost ) or which kinds, are recommended or not, thanks for including it. Have a blessed season !

What do you think about covering the beet portion of the bed with plastic until you start to get sprouts to help keep the moisture in but allow the sun in?

Bunnies love beet seedlings so I had to succession plant twice. Just picked a nice one yesterday as the garden is now bunny proof. Do you plant the seeds differently if you want just the baby greens for salads? Do you have a borscht recipe for us too? Good info - didn't know about the N needs.

Thanks so much for explaining the nitrogen thing. I've heard some saying you need lots of nitrogen while others say not to because it'll produce leaves but not the root. More leaves = more root makes complete sense.

Composting... is it ok to lay compos on top of the soil with seeds recently planted? I fear that the addition layer on top may prevent seeding sprouts from reaching the surface.And.. with seeds recently planted... should I be keeping the top layer (where the seeds are) moist all the time?

Thanks! I don't want the beets too high glycemic. I do want the leaves as high nutrient content and great liver detox also make much tastier keto chips than kale. So loose soil and lots of sun awesome.

Do you soak your seeds before planting? I always do but not sure if it’s necessary.. I also start some inside, and when I transplant they look a little sad but always do fine and perk up in a few weeks..

As the video pointed out, beets are the easiest thing to grow. I make a smoothie out of them mixed with banana and lemon. I also add one leave but the leave has a strong taste and you may not like it; although the leave contains lots of nutrients.

I know beets are cold hardy, but what about for planting? What is the night time low threshold they can sprout in? We are starting to bounce around between 34-55 every few days now at night, and 50-72 during the day.Should I hold off or can I plant mow?

Quick question: I pot planted beet seeds inside in April because I live in a colder climate. They sprouted really quickly and beautifuly. When they got to about 2-3 inches long, they lost their leaves, wilted and rotted. Any advice?

I know you asked this a year ago, but since you say you planted in a pot, maybe the soil you used didn't drain well? Too much moisture will cause rot.

To add to the soil and possibly light issues root veggies are not the best thing to plant indoors for transplant. Container planting is fine moving it outdoors but root veggies beets carrots rhubarb radishes etc do much better without transplant.

Hoping someone can help me out with this - we live in the Southern Hemisphere and planted some beetroot seedlings in early June (Winter) - they've survived, but we accidentally transplanted them in shallow containers (coz we didn't have much knowledge back then) - will they still do okay? Would earthing them up like for growing potato method help? Or should we transplant them into something much deeper.
