Underfeeding will certainly affect growth and can affect leaf colour, although I don’t know if that is what is causing the change in flower colour that you describe. I find flower colour often changes between when a flower first opens, and when it is done. For example, I have one plant with flowers that are a very light yellow upon first opening, but which darken considerably by the time they are done."

Do you bring them in for the winter?

Not outside. You have to bring them in over winter. Brugmansia is hardy in zones 9-11+, whereas NYC is zone 6.

+kris777 It's highly unlikely that they will come back. But before you dig them up give them a month or so to revive in spring. If they do come back, mostly like it will be from the roots.

+Richters Herbs believe it or not my plants survived!!! They did come back from the roots like you said. One is almost full height as last summer. The other is just peeking through the soil but trying just as well. I will be ready for winter this time. Thanks for this great video!

I'm so glad I kept scrolling through these comments because my neighbor moved and left all of them for the lady that moved in and she really did not want all of the work. I admired and fell in love with them because I would open my kitchen window and the beautiful smell would flow through my window. So I asked her if she would not mind giving them too me so my son dug some up and I had two in the pots. one pot I bought inside and now it's growing leaves but I still have about 4 outside. I'm praying they come back. So thank you for your reply.

Do you grow them in the ground unprotected from frost?

+Andrea Wischniowski - Fortkamp If the manure is well-rotted it is okay to add it as a thin top-layer. The problem with burning occurs when manure is not well-rotted or composted and the excess nitrogen burns the roots. You can either apply it as a top-dressing to an already potted up plant or mix it into your potting medium if you are re-potting your plant. Top-dressing of either manure or bark mulch will help to keep soil moist but manure will break down sooner.

Do you keep them indoors in winter?

North Carolina is mostly in zones 7 and 8, while Brugmansia is hardy down to zone 9. Normally it would not be expected to survive winter outdoors. Some winters you may have luck by protecting your plant as you suggest, but in a cold winter you could lose your it.

A friend has given me a seed head...I planted the seeds...its two months on, I have a purple trumpet flower on each plant! Unbelievable.

Brugmansias are very forgiving when pruned. All you need to know is they only flower after it’s trunk/branch splits and makes a Y. To guarantee you’ll always have flowers don’t cut below to lowest Y. The growth points/ buds are extremely visible on these plants. Always pale colored circles along the stems, make your cut right above one of those notches and shape it any way you want ☺️🌷

You can make a cutting from the broken top piece. Brugmansias are most often propagated by cuttings. Cut the 2-3 leaves down from the branch tip with a razor sharp knife (the cut must be clean) and stick in a good propagating medium such as a sand and peat mix or sand and vermiculite mix. For more information consult any resource on plant propagation.

They should bloom easily first year and be covered in blooms. So likely not enough sun or fertilizer I would assume.

When Brugmansia seed pods change from green to yellow they are ripe to pick and seeds inside are ready.

In general, unless there is a specific pest problem that you are trying to tackle, we don't recommend using pesticides. But if you do have pest problems, applying neem on soil can be helpful. That's because the active ingredient of neem, azadirachtin, is taken up by plants through the roots. Azadirachtin works against a wide range of pests including mites, whiteflies, aphids, thrips and fungus gnats. Azadirachtin does not kill existing bugs but it interferes with the normal development of the offspring of bugs, and so helps to keep bugs in check.

how did you get the cuttings started? i have an empty lot next door n id love any info bout digging some up the lot is full of them on the fence?

+Amber lamp labarge you can get cuttings and root them In water then plant them when roots have showed up or just plant the cuttings straight in dirt. Keep them in the shade until they start growing.

I just bought a house in zone 9A, and everything was dead, but when I installed a well irrigation system, I had about 10 of these pop up within a matter of two months and grow close to 10 feet tall!!! I am always out there, touching them with my bare hands and the flowers, etc.,and I have never had any ill effects I love them so much! You are right, they are extremely fast growing.

One of mine seem to have a dark purple trunk or steam not sure about the second one because it is much smaller than the other look very much the same so far

bdb jmb I don’t buy seeds online anymore because so many are scams. I ordered some from eBay and the envelope arrived with a Chinese address and official Homeland Security tape where they had opened it, confiscated the seeds, & resealed it. 😂

I live in Seattle too and have 5 angel trumpet plants if you want to bring them in for the winter you can store them in a basement or a garage and let them go dormant just make sure you water them enough to keep the root ball moist I check mine about every three weeks in the spring time when it gets above 50 or the last frost put them outside and use only water the first couple of times to moisten the roots after that use miracle tomato plant using the large part of the spoon that comes with the box and add to one gallon of water and fertilize every 2 weeks hope this helps you

They are closely related, but datura is usually a shrub, while brugmansia is a tree, they both look beautiful, datura is easier to keep alive in colder climates, so maybe try growing this instead, although be careful, they spread insanely fast.

I have never seen anything written about this specifically, but here is my thought process: Brugmansia is in the same family as potato, which contains an alkaloid (solanine, I think) that is also poisonous if ingested. And potato plants are often composted. (If you hear of people NOT composting potato plants, it is to avoid carrying over disease.) So I have treated brugmansia leaves and flowers as I do potato plants, and composted them. (The woody branches and trunks, however, are too woody for the compost heap.) I have never had any problems. I just did a quick search and came up with this article by the Royal Horticultural Society, which deals with the composting of one of Brugmansia’s weedy cousins, Datura stramonium: www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=536. When it comes to vermicomposting I don’t know and have never tried it."

Richters Herbs Okay, thank you very much. Someone gave me some Brugmansia seeds recently and I was thinking of trying to container grow them on my balcony, but I verma=compost and was worried about adding their leaves and spent flowers to my worm bin.

Since a focus of growing Brugmansias is the flowers, fertilizers relatively lower in the first number (nitrogen) and higher in the second number (phosphorus) are preferred because too much nitrogen in proportion to phosphorus can result in mostly leafy growth and fewer flowers. Something like a 5-10-5 would work well.

Bone meal

Sounds like you have a bad infestation of spider mites. If you check the undersides of the leaves they appear as tiny specks that slowly move around. If you have a magnifier you can confirm that. They can be hard to get rid of. Use repeated sprays of insecticidal soap, making sure to get all of the plant covered with spray, including the undersides of the leaves. The best way to ensure complete coverage is to dip the whole above-soil parts of the plant in a solution of insecticidal soap, and do that repeatedly every 3-4 days for a couple of weeks. Dipping the plant is of course only feasible for small plants.

I’m sure you figured it out by now but brugmansias almost always come out yellow at first then deepen to either orange, peach or pink. Unless they’re white.

As many in the horticultural industry will say, watering is the toughest job. It is hard to get right because the conditions and the plant's needs change a lot through the seasons and you cannot mindlessly water plants the same amount every day. This is especially true with plants that go into full dormancy or a semi-dormant slow-growth phase for part of the year. If you keep watering during these periods you will likely damage the root system with too much water. When plants are dormant or semi-dormant they are not transpiring much water through their leaves and the roots are not sucking up water. If you do not adjust your watering you end up with a flooded root system that will begin to rot, which is why Steven Biggs says you need to hold the water to once a month when Brugmansia is dormant. When the plants start to come out of dormancy, and as the leaves develop, you increase the water until the plants are fully active and you need to give them lots of water.

Hard to say. If your plant always had small leaves then perhaps it is not a Brugmansia but a Datura. If it is indeed a Brugmansia poor plant health can stunt growth and leaf size. If you are sure that you have a Brugmansia, inspect for signs of pest infestation and consider transplanting it in fresh potting soil.

Brugmansia will actually kill all of the caterpillars itself if you just leave it be, they contain tropane alkiloids that are toxic to humans and especially animals, these alkiloids cause deliriant like effects when ingested by humans usually not being fatal in moderation, however these effects are 100% of the time fatal to small organisms. You have to be careful handling this plant actually as these compounds can be absorbed through the skin.

We have never done it, but we have read that it is possible. They have the same number of chromosomes. Some people have reported successful crosses with Brugmansia as the pollen donor to Datura. However some have suggested that the progeny of such crosses exhibit mostly the features of the Datura parent, and hence are not particularly remarkable.
