Cloudberry Flowers - Flower Farm and Garden

Everything you ever wanted to know about growing cornflowers! Their Latin name is centaurea cyanus and sometimes you might hear them called bachelors buttons. They make fantastic filler flowers in arrangements, attract bees to the garden and they are super easy to grow too. I have grown them since I started my cut flower garden in 2014. In this video I share everything I have learned throughout the growing seasons about these amazing flowers.
In this video we look at:
Why grow cornflowers?
How to grow cornflowers from seed
Can you overwinter cornflowers?
Do they need supporting?
Do you pinch out cornflowers?
Do you need to deadhead cornflowers?
What kinds of annual cornflower are there?
What kind of growing conditions do they like and do they need fed?
How do I harvest and condition cornflowers?
Are they good for flower arranging or wedding work?
What else do I use cornflowers for?
If you are enjoying my flower videos and would like to show your support please do like, subscribe and share my channel or you can make a donation through 'buy me a coffee' at the link below. Your support is very much appreciated and helps me to keep going with my videos and growing my flowers.

Thank you. With the weather everyone has had this winter it has been difficult to get autumn sown seedlings through and a lot of losses so maybe not the worst year to have missed the boat on autumn sowing! Having said that the cornflowers have largely survived so it has shown how robust they are. I hope you get on well with all your spring sowing to get all the flowers going now x

Hello, thanks so much for watching and good luck with your cornflowers this year. Succession sowing really helps keep them going and it is nice to have them in August and September towards the end of the season. It’s just remembering to do those late succession sowings when the gardens in full swing and so many jobs to do!

@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm I’ve already marked it on my calendar. Can you tell me how many stems you put into your jam jar posies as I’m thinking about doing those this year and selling them. I’m not a flower farmer just a very enthusiastic gardener who grows way too many plants for my own garden. Thanks Deb
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm Жыл бұрын
@@Tea_and_thyme_2012 it does depend on the flowers I am using but approximately 15 in a jam jar. If they are larger special flowers like dahlias there will be fewer in the jar but if they are made up of smaller cornflowers, corncockles etc there may be a few more and normally 3-5 bits of foliage from the garden too x

Thank you so much Katherine wonderful video, really detailed and so helpful I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series. I was wondering if you could put a summary on screen at the end, for example ( sowing time for Aug, Feb & April - pinch yes as 20cm- plant out at 20cm etc) as I was constantly pausing to make notes. Either way I love your channel many thanks

Cornflowers despite being a bit fiddly to cut through netting and not big focal flowers still have to make it on the list every year for me to grow. I am glad they are going back on yours! They are so reliable, easy to grow and fab filler flowers 😊

Thanks so much for your insightful video. I love all the beautiful, upclose shots, especially helpful in the seedling stages. Where do you source the seeds? Living in California, I have never seen the cornflower series you mentioned, but I used to get the Thompson & Morgan catalog and perhaps need to contact them. Your floral artistry is amazing!

Thanks so much for watching 😊 I am glad you really enjoyed the video. There are a few places I have sourced cornflower seeds. Chiltern seeds, moles seeds, higgledy garden and I used to love getting them from seedaholic but unfortunately they do not post to Scotland anymore. I think Thompson Morgan would have them too.

Hi 😊 Yes you can definitely sow direct in both the autumn for overwintering and in spring when the weather and soil start to warm up which definitely helps if you are short on space indoors.

Will you be doing a video on Borage? I have grown them very tall and it was my first thing to grow 3-4 years ago. I am currently waiting for blue cornflowers to grow on my balcony but may grow them in the garden next year I am aiming for a mixed meadow for wildlife 😊

@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm Жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks so much for watching. A mixed meadow for wildlife sounds fantastic. If you are wanting to grow some smaller cornflowers to enjoy in pots on your balcony next year there are a few dwarf varieties that I have grown, polka dot and Florence blue. This year I haven’t grown any borage but I have in the past and love it. I have grown white and blue varieties and they do grow very tall with big thick stems.
