Video Series: Part 1: Germinating Daylily Seeds: I will show you step by step how to get great germination without a lot of fuss. We use paper towels, little baggies, and a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water to get our daylily seeds growing. Daylily seeds require cold stratification to germinate. You can grow your seeds indoors over the winter by using your refrigerator to mimic winter for them. You do this by placing them in the refrigerator for a minimum of 3-5 weeks prior to the date you want to germinate them. Once you remove them, you'll add water and leave at room temperature until the seeds sprout and you can pot them up! Follow along and let's grow together! Visit my Facebook Page to join our "Live" Q&A grow sessions and connect with others growing their seed during the winter!

I Shelly, I have been following your channel for years, sorry I don’t always comment, but always give you a 👍. I have found that the best process for starting day Lilly’s seeds. I put on a pair of gloves and take the seed and sand it a little just until I see the white. Then I put it into a quite damp paper towel inside of a baggy and put it under my sink ( warm dark place) check it everyday. Usually within a week, mostly all have sprouted and I plant them up. I do the same with canna Lilly’s. They look exactly the same as they day Lilly seeds do. I have been wanting the ruby spiders for soo long and can not get my hands on it. I signed up for your news letter in hopes of getting it as well as some of your other seeds you offer! Especially the echinaceas! Absolutely adore you and your family . And love your videos. So happy you are posting more videos! Congratulations on your new property and beautiful barn! You are so blessed and deserve it! 🫶

Wonderful video. Love your practical set up and advice. The hydrogen peroxide helps with suppressing algae growth. I use a small amount in water gardens. Great idea. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm. (you remind me of Jane Roberts. Her husband was a painter)

I collected seeds this fall but didn't create the crosses. Nature did. I do know which daylily is the pod parent, mostly by color, since I don't know all the names of my 30 year old daylilies. I started 22 seeds, 5 different varieties, on Dec 4th, and today, Dec 26th, I have 11 plants growing from 4 varieties. I wish I had seen this video then because I may have had more success. I did not know about the hydrogen peroxide, so all I used was our well water. I had some seeds that germinated but never grew, and although you said not to scarify them, 5 of my sprouts came from scarified seeds. I only did that because they hadn't germinated and thought it couldn't hurt; either they'll grow or never germinate. I was shocked that they grew. I will follow along with your videos at this point and hopefully get some pointers on what to do next. They're growing in a south facing window and under grow lights when there's no sun. (Maryland, zone 7) So far, so good. Thanks for the tips you sent me back in Sept, which helped get me to this point in my daylily seed propagation journey. It's quite fun. I hope they'll flower this year!

Awesome! It sounds like you’re off to a good start! Scarifying isn’t necessary but if you had success doing it with stubborn seeds, that’s amazing! You’re going to do great! ❤️

Very informational video! This is the first year I crossed and germinated daylily seeds. I only kept tract of the pod parent, next year I will document each plant. But now have 30 daylily plants under grow lights. The seeds I purchased from you are now sprouting and will have to pot them up. I can't wait for the live session!

Hi.... I could use some advice... I have several hundred daylily seeds, all three years old. They have been kept in refrig the entire time. Some tried to sprout while in refrig and I have thrown those out... smelly :( I have tried the paper towel method. I first am soaking the seeds overnight and then placing on damp paper towel and into the baggy or a container with lid. Mold on seeds and towel has been TERRIBLE with very low success rate. I have more recently rinsed the seeds in 3% hydrogen peroxide hoping to "clean" them and placed them in baggy containing damp perlite, hoping to cut down on mold growth on the seeds. Any ideas on dealing with these old seeds appreciated....
@GuidingGreenThumbs

I use hydrogen peroxide in the the water to wet the paper towel while germinating. If they don’t germinate at room temp in the first week- 2 weeks, I change the entire paper towel. They should sprout at the latest 3-4 weeks. Are the seeds still firm? I have never tried to sprout 3 year old seeds before so I cannot help with the viability of older seeds. I am not sure how long they are good for. Winter sowing might be a better option for them. Let nature germinate them naturally.

I'd rather winter sowing in jugs than indoor seeding... Easier and cheaper and noooo harding off the plants and wayyyy cheaper 🌱❤️🌱
@GuidingGreenThumbs
@GuidingGreenThumbs Жыл бұрын
Totally would work! The benefit of indoor sowing over the winter is that it gives you something to tend to while the outside world is dormant and you will get to see your blooms quicker. If you winter sow (which is a great option!), you will most likely see blooms in years 2-3 versus indoor starting where you can see them bloom the same year or the following season. ❤️

Hello, how long does it take from seed to flower? Does it really take 2 years?
@GuidingGreenThumbs
@GuidingGreenThumbs Жыл бұрын
If you start the seed indoors over winter, you can see a bloom in Aug/Sept if the same year (which is why many people do start them early). If planted in the ground or you wait until spring to plant seeds, yes, it can take 2-3 years to see a bloom. 😊

@@GuidingGreenThumbs Do you have to do cold stratification? I had seeds from a lily pod after it was done blooming and I kept it on a shelf through the rest of fall and over the winter. Not even in a bag. They are dried, will they still grow? Should I put them in the frig now?

Did it and 100% failure rate. I know you do it, but if someone asked me, I"d tell them daylilies don't grow from seeds. They just sit there, like pea gravel. There is no way to make a seed germinate. You can grow them from roots, but not seeds.

I have a Facebook page here: facebook.com/GreenThumbDesigner?mibextid=LQQJ4d I start a seed starting session in December with live group checkins along the way every few weeks! I would definitely overwinter in the ground (whether that’s in pots or without). NY winters are harsh and even more harsh in pots above ground.
