Densest and most yield per sqare footage of root space was 6" pots filled with rockwool mini cubes or hydroton or even both. I would harvest 128 colas off a 5x9 flood table usully ending up with 128 oz. Co2 at 1000ppm with 3 1000hps or 6 315cmh with far red 700nmplus added. You can get the cmh closer and the co2 will let them use the shit out of it.

I've been growing weed outdoors for 40 years and got the rap sheet to prove it. I can't comment on indoor grows because I don't do them. Outdoors ground preparation and root growth is the key to a healthy plant but not necessarily dense buds. Probably the number one factor in all bud formation is genetics but apart from that the following applies: For dense buds avoid nitrogen other than what is strictly required for a healthy plant and preferably early in growth stages not later and never at flowering. Took me many years to understand that because I used to be into huge plants pushing them at all stages with max nitrogen for optimum growth. Apart from that the secret is simply max sunlight end of story. There are no chemicals that will increase bud density in a good way. I prefer organic grows and the plants that get the most sunlight for the longest always have the best buds and potency is directly related to heat. The more the plant bakes in the sun and the more extreme and dry the heat then the more potent it gets regardless of bud density. It should also be noted that bud density can be a very bad thing outdoors in a humid environment.

Agreed on all points. The tighter those budz are will cause rain etc to accumulate. Where I am the plants are in full flower during rainy weeks and sometimes the sun won't appear for days. Next, the budworms are usually starting to flourish at this time along with all other insects since the added rain is causing so much growth in all vegetation. Even with B.T. you will most likely see some chewing and rot.especially since the rain will wash away b.t. and keep you inside and not inspecting your plants. I'm trying to cross a few favorites that are dense and airy. Hopefully this year I will have plants that are wide instead of 10 feet high.will be able to hold their own weight in flower even when wet and with 60 mph wind. Will have minimal trimming, and won't smell up the entire block. 😆👌 we can all dream right? Lololololol.💚

@@therealrobertbirchall that said I'm not saying you need to go crazy. Keeping it simple is always best especially for newer growers. I been growing for more than 22 years. A beginner can start with a good peat moss mix , some purified water and generic brand general purpose fertilizer along with flowering formula. Maybe a little peroxide and some molasses during flowering and that's all you need. I'd also suggest some mycorrhizae maximum root growth. But that's about it.

Totally agree, i literally trim my plant very aggressively about week 3-4 in flower. I can say this is also strain dependent but normally I can say many strains I grow all plants after I lollipop have around 6-9 tops period! On some exotic strains that don’t produce much with any training habit it is what it is, I usually leave about 5 tops on the plants and leave me a very nicely formed Nug generally from top to bottom. So yeah Nug density and structure can be manipulated by trimming your plants down 🙏 great video

You’re spot on Chris. Humidity is the key. Too high and mold issues unless the buds are airier to breathe, and too low and they’re airy because they have to breathe more. Also why many indica landrace genetics aren’t mold resistant because they never have to deal with that in their natural environment. Great episode. 10 years and still learning, never stagnate.

It's a two way street. You can have a little more heat, if the moisture is helping the plant out. You can run low a little on moisture, if its not too hot and so on. But if you create those -/- situations where you are dry AND hot for example that's killing your bud.

Looking up the genetic tree of said given strain and finding where the landrace strains came from then mimicing that in your garden is a great way to avoid issues because you are giving it what it was created and flourished in naturally. Basically like you said many Kush Indica strains from Afghanistan can do well in low humidity but once the % is too high powdery mildew shows up real quick.

Great podcast. I have been growing outdoors only for 4 decades. I live in the high desert. I just start my seeds then plant them in homemade compost with worms and let nature do her thing. I give compost tea to each plant once a month. They are in direct sun the whole season. Once flowering begins, I do give each plant milk with organic black strap molasses in it, (1/2 gal mix of WHOLE milk and 1/4 cup molasses) per plant. I have personally noticed that the milk/molasses mix does make the buds more crystal quickly & sweet. I also believe they do dense up when fed this drink. My personal observation of my own plants here. I never feed nutrients other than my own compost, compost tea. A good living soil is all you need. I do add milk and molasses to my compost when the season is over to just add some sugars. We have had a very hot 105+ temps for the entire month of July so I have been watering them early morning and just at dusk as they do need more water right now. I water to the count of 20 and thats it. On normal days I water once a day in the morning. I do remove the large leaves and lighten the plants by constantly removing excess greenery to redirect the energy to the tops of the plant where the buds will be. I do think that to FIM the plants in the beginning helps to bring more top growth for the buds. I just feel like since they are WEEDS and grow best in the extreme wilds of the deserts that its best to just watch them and interfere very little.

yh I must say the milk thing must have something to it, I went to this place that had a fern in a hanging bowl, the fern had more fronds than I had ever seen before on this type of fern. It was in a small hanging pot, so it wasn't the soil. i asked how the hell do you look after it, the lady said, when we have leftover milk or milk thats past the date, we just dump it in the pot. Clearly, the bacteria love the milk and help the plant grow to that sort of extreme. I will be experimenting with this, maybe low fat milk is better I am guessing

I figured out how to grow denser buds by training the roots to absorb in a specific way. I call it dry water. Ive only tried it for outdoor buds. It makes sativa buds denser and indica buds even more denser. You get a large pot that has more width and one that keeps in moisture like a plaster. Of course using a grow medium that's practically worm casting, mulch and/or coco choir with organic nkp. The goal is to use minimal water in the vegetative stage. Making sure that the watering never soaks the entire pot or flows out the bottom. Just a few cups to allow it to grow. In the wild as long as the plant has moisture it will grow, even in a solid slab of cement. Because it learns to use whats available. Plants are adaptable. Here's the trick. You're aiming to have some of the roots push its growth into the dry/barely moist medium. This will force the plant to adapt and change its ability of absorption into a robust form. Forcing it to self regulate, hold more water, retain moisture appropriately with nature and, won't expell excess water through its leaves/stems. It will be picky at what it allows itself to absorb at its growth stages so it wont eat much nitrogen and make it fluffly. We teach our plants to depend on an extreme level of watering thats considerd unnatural. Too much water changes its functionality. Once the roots grow in the dry soil youll see the plant will have a sturdy structure. You pretty much want the roots to fill the pot slowly by the time it reaches budding. If you soak through the pot the roots will overtake the entire pot, eat up all the nutrients and youll have a plant starving for water and food and drooping a day after water. That stresses the plant and after budding its roots and plant structure stop growing thus its ability to change its chemistry and protocol will be hinderd or shot. By the time the plant goes into flower, water it well everyday. Its a tad bit smaller in the veg stage but it will look solid and robust. It wont droop for a while and the plant gains this ability to take what it needs in a balanced way from the soil thats still rich from staying dry, instead of just drinking it all up like a trained sponge and eating up nitrogen when it doesent need to. Thats how I got denser buds. They look like top notch buds. Tipped a few times and only removal of bottom leaves for flow, maybe lollipop it. My next grow I plan to stop giving the plant nitrogen a few weeks before it flowers to attempt to get all the nitrogen out of the soil. Of course we all do that but theres still nitrogen in soil. Of course genetics play a role too but it seems to work best for my observation.

I'm in search of the perfect ratio of blue to red using red, blue, and white leds during flower. Something that has worked for me to help my plants transition early is to run the red lights only for the last 10 - 15 mins once the flower light cycle begins. This makes the plant think that it is in the shade and winter is coming. I have noticed quicker transitions during a side by side comparison

I would add the molasses at the beginning of flowering. Plants use up magnesium in photosynthesis. Give the soil the kick it needs, to replace it, as you up the Potassium. It's in the fertiliser I make anyway, but some may want to not use it the whole flowering period. Also molasses helps the plant uptake nutrients, and if you over potassium them it blocks the uptake of nutrients, so there is the safeguard, organically as well.🇨🇦👊🏻👨🏻‍🌾💖🌞

I really appreciate the diversity of views you bring to one channel, it makes it so much easier to string together the similarities on what actually works across the board when it comes to growing this plant. When you see so many people all agreeing to nearly the same point, you know you've found something that works, be it lighting, watering, feeding , and so on. It helps for when setting goals, how you get there is up to you. Thank you again for yet another great episode.

one time when I lived in a trailer the power went out and the room got up to 105, I didn't have water to feed them, so I bought a bag of ice and set some in the top of the plant. and when I harvested shortly after that, it was the best dank super sticky buds ever. I grew that strain for years danny travino. I wonder if high heat followed up by ice slash water mades a huge differance

Excellent educational topics. Keep them coming ! I am at the end of week 4 of flower (Garlic Cookies pheno). Your story of accidentally giving your plant too much Nitrogen was very helpful. I have too done this during this grow. Thankfully after watching this video I cut all Nitrogen intake unfortunately at the end of week 3 (Advanced Nutrients: Sensi Cal-Mag Xtra and Iguana Juice Bloom) which are heavy in Nitrogen :(. I am sure this has stunted my plants bud yield. Thank you for the advice and past stories (good or bad) for they are extremely helpful.

Giving too much nitrogen, too much cal mag and over fertilization is a right of passage in the cannabis grow world. I don’t know a grower who hasn’t been bitten by that bug at some point, but we all learn from it and get better weed because of it! Cheers

Thanks Chad! Agree genetics are number 1 by a long shot. By far the most dominant factor for density. Think cookies vs. haze. Most hype breeders slinging cookie-dominant lines will be tight. Got your dense genetics? Number 2 is light. High intensity is needed, and a spectrum that's blue-dominant with plenty of UV will tighten things up like a seal's behind (think CMH, clean white leds) Compared to HPS or a spectrum w/o enough blue or UV, ie lights that more dominant w/far red/IR will promote more stretch/elongation. I think plants like their environment warm and humid, like mid 70s-mid 80s F and humid enough to smell it or feel it. Think summer air vs. winter air. I dont pay too much attention to CO2 or nutes because I'm running living soil and the plants feed themselves what they want

Unless you're growing with enhanced conditions (CO2 supplement w 1200 ppm nute kevels) you wanna keep those temps low to get the density. Light intensity also plays a big role in bud density.

@Mrgrowit thank you for all that you've done I'm a first time grower . On my first run. I started watching all sorts of videos and tutorials but yours have been the most informative. Your pie casts in KZfaq auto play after I watch any other video. To me that tells me where you're at on this algorithm. You have helped me in so many ways with your interviews you do. All the people who you've interviewed deserves a lot of credit. But you Chris have made this happen and thank you for your dedication to making gardening an open source for All to learn. I grow in 3x4 tents and always found it was too crowded with 2 plants in each so I switched to 1 plant at a time in 15gal fabric pots and they grow much healthier. I use advance nutrients Ph perfect with a drip feeding system and never have to worry about it. for rh and temp control i just use a portable a/c unit that maintains the entire room.
