Love this video. Video series idea: every year I have to scour KZfaq to figure out what can I plant/germinate from seeds now in January, then in February, etc. I think it would be really cool especially since you’re zone 3 if you put out a video series titled what seeds to plant in January, then in February you do one for that month, then the next month, etc. etc. The important thing is to put the month in the title so It’ll stick in people’s minds to search by month! My frustration is that people do these videos, which is great, but I can’t find them again the following year because the title is either too generic and the info is buried, or too plant specific and I’d be watching 1xvideo per plant, lol. It’d also make an awesome playlist.

Grows well in South New Jersey one is growing 10 ft. I think.because in sandy soil with rock.mulch and closest to house gives it more protection . Rarely gets damage if super cold but it recovers. Lucky I got seedlings sold in a flat at a great garden center

If you’re looking for eucalyptus trees which are cold tolerant then choose the snow gum. As the name suggests, they are found in area of Australia where they experience conditions during winter with consistent snowy conditions

Eucalyptus is actually a perennial shrub, right? In zone 3, can they be put into dormancy late fall and stored in a cool dark basement? I remember my mom used to over winter geranium that way.

I’m still wondering how you overwinter these. Do you grow them as an annual? Is that enough time to really use them in bouquets as they grow so slow? If you do over winter, do you wrap them or cut them right back?
@ShiftingRoots
@ShiftingRoots 5 ай бұрын
I grow them as an annual, but you can pot them up and take them indoors over winter. If you don’t have a south facing window, it will need a supplemental light.

So... start seeds in december. Right after starting them, i put them under the light? Do i use my heating pads? And bc we are in a colder state (wisconsin), will i habe to repeat the process every year? If not, any tips on how to preserve the plants over the winter? Thanks!!!

Great video :) Thanks so much for covering the topic, I'm in zone 8 and I've been wondering if eucalyptus would work for us. I know eucalyptus work in zone 8, but in Portugal, we have many microclimate some nights it gets to -7 - -12 so we're not a true zone 8 if that makes sense... So I was hesitant to add eucalyptus to my landscape garden but I'll defo give it a try thanks to your video :)
@ShiftingRoots
@ShiftingRoots 2 жыл бұрын
It totally makes sense, and if you read some of the other comments, I wonder if you could grow it like a tree like they do in Australia.
@SimpleLifePortugal
@SimpleLifePortugal 2 жыл бұрын
@Shifting Roots, hey girl! :) You good? Yes, Eucalyptus trees grow well in Portugal. (Especially in the south) Ehehe, a little too well, actually. Fun fact, once upon a time, the EU has strongly encouraged companies (toilet paper companies) to plant Eucalyptus trees in Portugal because they grow so fast and are so beautiful. But they are very flammable too. So there's a new movement amongst growers to ban Eucalyptus trees because of forest fires :( And the other issue with Eucalyptus Trees here is the damage they do to the soil in our context. I hope the Gunnii Eucalyptus doesn't damage the soil too much. It's been a long dream of mine to grow some.

I am over on Vancouver island, and this is my second year growing eucalyptus. My first year, every seed germinated and i had about 50 plants. After a month or so they all got bubbling on their stems and leaves that killed them. I now only have one survivor, and i believe it was due to too mush water. This year i have 100 seeds and will be doing experiments to see what the cause was. Same seeds from west coast seeds.

When you say "eucalyptus" you refer to more than seven hundred species of flowering trees, shrubs or mallees in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. This is about as useful as saying "growing a plant". Mentioning the specific species you're growing would be helpful to anyone with a clue. BTW, we have alpine eucalypts that happily grow in cold/short seasons, as well as ones that grow deep south. FWIW it seems you're growing one of my local species, Eucalyptus cinerea (Argyle apple). They 'over winter' fine, will happily take -6º and hard frosts. They'll grow 50-100ft if happy!
