This is the video that inspired me to start gardening... my first ginger plant was in a 1/2 liter tupperware with no holes and clay soil. I planted it in January (cold, but I'm from the tropics, so 12-15C cold). I overwatered it coz I had no idea what an inch of water meant, and it obviously died. From then till now I've grown water spinach, malabar spinach, ginger, cucumber, okra, garlic and onion leaves, lemongrass, sweet potato, spring onion, culantro, ixora (regular and dwarf), cape jasmine, lantana, crape jasmine, mustard, cilantro, and flat beans, all in about six feet of my backyard. I had Covid in April, and I also found gardening a way to relax and take my mind off things. So thanks a bunch for inspiring me to take up gardening. :D

My ginger plant is growing great! One thing I discovered, however, is that the ginger root that you buy at a grocery store is sprayed with something that prevents it from sprouting! So I bought my initial root to plant at a natural foods market where I was certain it was organic and free of any kind of spray. It was the first time I was able to successfully grow a beautiful plant! Thanks for the great video!

Notes - Ginger exported from Asia. -We harvest the rhizome, which is the underground stem. We harvest the main stem of the plant. - If buying ginger at the grocery store look for eyes. The larger the rhizome chunk the faster you’ll get your ginger. New growth comes from those “eyes” larger chunks create more sprouts, because there are enough areas for the shoots to come out. The more shoots creates more shoot development up top and more root grow down below, which means more photosynthesis which is more energy and more growth and getting ginger faster. - Ginger stalks grow horizontally in one direction. A wide shallow pot is better than narrow deep pot for growing ginger. - Use high quality soil that’s loose rich and organic. - You can prèspout ginger in bowl of water or plant ginger straight in and add water. - Ginger is not like standard root crop like potato (would plant deep) simply add ginger and cover 1/2 inch over soli - Add ginger and water it in. - - To understand where to place ginger where did it come from? - Came from Southeast Asia - tropical, rainfall, moist, heat, humidity. - Start in Spring, or indoors if not good weather. Problems - Brown tips - soil is not moist enough, Yellow - lack of nutrients, add fertilizer Soggy and Rotting - too much water Flowers - Normal, edible also Harvesting - If in dry are- add mulch to hold in moisture - first harvest 4-5 months - before frost harvest all of it.

Don't dry your ginger! Keep it frozen and grate straight from the freezer when you want to use it. This allows you to keep the full flavour without sacraficing convenience.

Grating ginger - I've always fought the strings and the loss of juice, when trying to grate it. I've since started keeping ginger in the freezer. It grates super fine and there's no loss of juice and NO strings. Perfect for making Chai tea, in soups or anywhere you'd use grated ginger.

I would have liked to see a clip of you actually going through the procedure of harvesting as well.

I've been using a technique for a while now where you let the eyes of the ginger sprouts,cut them off and plant directly into the soil. That way,you don't have to put an entire ginger in the soil and also,you will get a new ginger out of one sprout. It's very effective. Hope it helps.

Ginger is a tropical and sub-tropical plant that is usually sheltered by trees above so it is important to grow it in the shade. Protect it from the harsh sun if grown in part shade. This will help keep the soil moist too.

I love how there's now just a whole bunch of people doing primeval things like growing ginger or baking sourdough bread because of quarantine. We get so carried away by our jobs and modern lives that we forget what our ancestors enjoyed doing.

I tried growing ginger when I lived in Florida.. it always rotted. I had a bunch of ginger rhizomes in a bowl on my counter last summer (not in Florida) and really wasn't using it much for what ever reason so it was neglected let's say. I start seeing all these sprouts! I'm excited trying to figure out how to plant them and grow them... finally! There was no water in that bowl they were in on my counter btw. So I planted the sprouting rhizomes...I water very little and they are growing beautifully. All by 'accident'... can't wait for the harvest.

I have a large brocholli box full of ginger in my carpark in full sun, in memory of my uncle who had a paddock full of it in Queensland, and my fond memory of sitting in his shed trimming armfuls of it with the lovely smell enveloping us. !

Ginger is a good weapon. It heals my gut, wakes me up, helps with infections. I chew pure ginger every day.

Just wanted to share what I use for a budget/free wide-pot: 2.5 gallon water jugs. Cut off one side and poke some holes on the other for drainage, and you have a perfect container for ginger, lettuce, small radish and other shallow-rooted plants 🌿 👍

I bought a container of ginger and turmeric to make teas for my vacc1ne injuries. (I make kind of like a chai tea with whole cloves, slices of ginger, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg and cardamom.) Lo and behold, while they were still in the container two started to sprout! Inside without water! And here I am! I think when I was In the South (North Carolina) I had a ginger plant and the flowers smelt like Easter Lillies. I am back in the North and it's heading towards winter, so they are staying inside. Who am I to say these little ginger babies can't have a life in the North?!❤

Do a vid on turmeric root, please! I dropped one in my potting soil bag and it sprouted. I've see a picture of a mature plant and its got a gorgeous flower!

About 4 years ago, I had some ginger left and put it in a pot. Just wanted to see if I could grow it. It was a pretty big pot. Last year, it "blew" up the post. It grew really nicely, but I never broke up the pieces. Doing that tomorrow. I can't believe I got so much from the little piece I planted.

I used to have 2 different ginger plants in my back yard. The smell was intoxicating and the flowers were stunning. They spread fairly quickly and filled up shady corners

A tip when grinding... when you’re done, turn the grinder upside down and hit the grind button again. You get most all of whatever you’re grinding in the lid/cup and it’s much easier to transfer. 😊

My Asian aunt chews raw ginger like candy! But it's probably what helped her to still be so strong at 72 and 20 years younger looking!👍👍

When it is done fresh, it smells awesome. Turmeric also grows about the same as ginger. Two less spices you have to buy at the store.

There are 5 plants in the same family: ginger, turmeric, galangal, ginseng, and iris. All of them have culinary uses. Iris, native to Europe, is used as a substitute lemon flavouring. They're all regarded as great for the digestion.

Ginger was my best friend for morning sickness: Chop a 1 inch cube of fresh Ginger, place in a cup and add boiling water, plus any sweetener you like. Sip it while it's hot ; ) Cures indigestion, too! Candied Ginger is very spicy, but can be substituted for fresh Ginger with boiling water. Enjoy!

I'm a recently retired Science teacher and I live in Khon Kaen, Thailand, so I'm glad I chose today to check out your channel since you featured the Thai variety of ginger. After seeing this, I'm going to talk to my wife (who runs the gardening department at our house) about growing some ginger. She has lots of pots outside with onions and green herbs, (and flowers ) and we have a garden across the road with about a half-dozen banana plants, some coconut palms, a chili shrub or two, and in the yard is a huge mango tree, several linchi and several tamarind trees, so some ginger is needed to round out the collection. lol As my man Ahh-nold says, "Owl be back..."

I live in a sub-tropical region in South Africa and have been growing ginger for a few years now for own use. Your advice is spot on. Mine is planted outside in a shallow long garden bed in semi-shade / sun. Lots of organic compost aided by some cow manure and very occasionally some commercial fertilizer. It does flower and grows quite vigerously. I harvest once a year after the plants die back slightly and then immediately re-plant for the new season. Very rewarding. Thank you for the info. on making the powder. Am I correct in assuming that you 115 deg. temperature recommendation was deg F ? and not, as we use here, deg. C.? I have "liked" and subscribed. I am growing a ginger plant myself for two years or so indoors. When I need ginger to cook I just go into the soil with my knife and cut off what I need and let the plant regrow. Now after 2 years the ginger wasn't soo good anymore and this time I renewed the soil and tried planting a few smaller roots next to each other to see if this works out too. I also use a watering bird, it has a foot out of clay and an opening where I put all the water in and the plant takes what it needs without getting soggy. Works fine for me.

I started growing my own ginger a few years ago. I love doing it, the scent is fantastic. Mine was trial and error. I cut the eyes off and started them in *warm* water in my kitchen window. I have one that has overwintered for three winters so far, and sent up shoots in the spring. I do let the shoots die off, and water once a week over the winter-- always with warm water. The ginger I have gotten from it has been wonderful!

When you boil the leaves for about 10 minutes, adding honey and lime upon serving is sooooo good

Thanks for growing and showing how to prepare it. Its most helpful to have as much thorough info as possible. So many times i get bits and pieces of info from so many places but it gets lost. I think learning things in a more complete way, step by step is important for retaining specific details on a particular topic. I always try to peel my ginger...lol so this helps to be able to skip that!

Pssst Kevin, Fermented ginger& garlic in honey is a really good immune boost and makes terrific cough medicine as well as a delicious finishing sauce for Chicken and prawns with the sprinkle love toasted sesame seeds😂. I've never had much luck growing turmeric or Ginger type produce. You've encourage me to give it another crack thanks🙌

Ginger leaf makes the *best* vinegar... usually I grow the ginger just for the leaves... they are slightly more sweet and floral than root. Pairs well with turmeric leaf.

Thanks for the video. I planted some too deep last year. And in a deep pot. Yep. I was thinking they are like potatoes. I have the same dehydrator and love it. Also have a coffee bean grinder. When you sliced yours, you didn't remove the outer 'skin'. I'll do it your way. Also I appreciate your voice. Bet it is as calming when you talk to your plants.
