A few years ago, during Winter, I told my son to take out the compost at grandma's house. Instead he threw it in my garden. The next Spring I noticed what he'd done because a peach pit had sprouted. Being busy elsewhere I shrugged and allowed it. Last week we ate peaches off that tree. We've named it Chris's lazy peaches. They are my favorite peaches.

Just on a whim, I planted 3 Clementine seeds. Only one in that whole bag had seeds. They came up! All three!!! Now, I have to figure out where in my house to sit them. Lol

I got grapefruit seedlings growing from seed too. And lemons, key limes and oranges. Hey why not? Lol.

Gardening videos aren’t my typical KZfaq videos, but I ended up here because we just moved into a house with a huge grapefruit tree that my oldest son (11) LOVES and now wants to try and grow more grapefruit trees 😅 at first I said no because we can’t keep them… but then I realized that we could sell or give the away if we’re successful, and I gave in. Plus, the experience of it for him and the other kids will be awesome. So here I am, researching how to propagate grapefruit 🤣 and ended up on this video… and I’m glad I did because it looks like you have some awesome videos and I can’t wait to watch more!!

My haphazard way of growing is to throw seeds in pots with another plant so I water. then they pop up I transplant.

A few days ago, I was visiting my childhood home in Jacksonville and plucked a few grapefruit off the tree in my parent’s yard. I ate them and saved about a dozen seeds and brought them back home to Vegas. That tree back in Jax is about 30 years old. My grandma was walking down the road one day in central FL in the mid 90s and saw a few grapefruit in the gutter that had fallen off the back of a citrus truck. They all had little seedlings that had sprouted right out of the fruit. She stuck them in some Solo cups and put them on her window sill where they sat for a few weeks until my parents moved to the Jacksonville property where I grew up. She gave them to my mom as a housewarming gift. Only one survived, but it was a hardy sucker that didn’t actually produce any fruit for the first 10-12 years. Once it did start fruiting though, holy smokes. That single tree easily puts out at least a couple hundred grapefruit per season if not more. They are a little tart, but are easily the sweetest, juiciest grapefruit I’ve ever eaten. Nearly 20 years on, it still does. Ended up here because I wanted to increase my odds of success in getting these things to sprout. Will update if they do. Thanks for the great advice and wish me luck. Grandma passed about a decade ago, but I still wanna do her proud.

I actually just planted grapefruits a few months ago. I put them in a zip lock bang and a wet paper towel .. I had 14 seeds and only 4 sprouted and so far they are doing good. They got there first “ young adult “ leaf but now there is a small Lal :/ so I’m not sure what’s going on but they are green and seem to be happy :) also grape fruits and citrus fruit grow true to seed so usually you will get the same fruit from the fruit you ate.

Were you looking through persian limes? Almost 100% of them have no seeds. I'm a chef so I go through so so many fruits. Maybe 1 out of every 2-300 limes has a seed unless it's a key lime. Try peeling the seed casings after soaking for a day they germinate way faster! I have so many citrus started from seed. Including blood oranges that show promise due to them being polyembryonic.

Where I live in Southern California there are old citrus orchards up in the mountains and in some valleys that are abandoned and some of the trees look like they are about to die but the grapefruits and oranges are super super sweet, your mouth just gets sticky and the lips burning from the citrus oil 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤

Yes! I love citrus, even though I kill a lot of it. Well, my zone (8b) kills a lot of it. Ok, I sometimes kill them. My grandson spit out and gave me the one seed he found in his mandarin over the weekend. I put it in a paper towel and it is germinating , I just checked it as I watched this video. We're going to name it after him, whatever it turns out to be. Getting him interested in what I am doing in the process.

Man, I live about an hour and half from you. After watching one of your videos a while back where you mentioned that landscaping cloth I started trying to source it (not from Amazon if I could help it). All I can find is that soft fuzzy roll fabric. I even asked around at two different nurseries. They acted like that stuff was the key to starting a nursery or something. Like I was dealing with the nursery mafia and they didn't want me in...I guess it'll have to be Amazon...

The other day I harvested a pink grapefruit and when I cut it in half I found a seed that was already germinated and had a green shoot. I planted it. I have a seedling from a Chinese Honey Tangerine that was planted from seed. It’s an amazing tree. Took about 8 years to fruit. I have heard that some citrus, including tangerines, grapefruits, pomelos and lemons grown from seed will be identical to the parent tree, is that true? BTW. I’ve never seen a seed in a Persian Lime. I’m guessing you made some limeade or margarita mix. Funny.

David, I did that with lemons I did find out because I did a little experiment half of the seeds I washed and the other half I left the lemon pulp on them and planted them the next day and would you believe the seeds that I did not wash came up first buy a few days more of them came up and the plants were healthier but of course I neglected watering most of them so I'm down to 5 6 inch lemon trees but technically I only need one

Hello David. I love grapefruit, this winter though because of the Texas freeze of 2021 they been double the price, anyways I bought two. One sat on the counter a while, skin kept looking great so I kept saving it for later, when I finally peeled it and shared it with my daughter, on my half the seeds had already started rooting. I kept the seeds ( a couple of days), in the damp membrane of the fruit till I could take them and pot them. I had 4 seeds, two came up! ☺️They’re about 2” tall, they have very tiny shiny leaves. I appreciate what you do and share it, thank you!💗

I've been hard pressed to find limes with seeds. Most other citrus from the stores though. The new blood oranges even had seeds.

Your video is hysterical. I love it. I am currently growing mushrooms and grapefruit trees I was looking to see if there was a special soil I should use. Mushrooms are like so much easier for me. I kill everything else. I even killed a lucky bamboo money tree. So now I’m supposed to have 7 yrs bad luck or something.??? Well that happened in 2014 actually. So that 7 yrs is over. I've never found a seed in a lime. I once planted a lemon seed, but only had it for a couple years. It had these huge thorns on it and after getting stabbed by them for the 8th time, I cut that sucker down. I think I had a bad seed.

Hey david, once i kept citron seeds few month before i knew about their short storage life, and they germinated. I guess its because they sub tropical. so its better to plant them right away but possible to store a few months. Thanks for the video

both citrus and mango can sometimes produce polyembrionic seeds with a few seedlings per seed, most of these multi seedlings are clones of the parent tree

Once, I incidentally grew a pear tree from seed; a fresh seed from a pear I was eating. It was the most beautiful tree I ever had. It received an accidental shock to the base of the trunk when 11-12 years old and bloomed for the first time. People said it would never flower, then never fruit. By autumn the pears where the biggest, most perfect, juiciest and tastiest I ever had the pleasure of. It continued to provide pumper crops every two years and moderate crops every other year, for many tens of years. Where the accidental damage occurred at the base of the trunk, it became most valuable and large lump of burr wood; which especially carpenters value. Now, unfortunately for me and the future of human kind, I was then a novice in the garden who never thought to do the same with the seeds of that tree. I saved seeds not until the last few harvests, but must have stored them far to long, for whenever I eventually tried to germinate any of those seeds, they failed! I have a young lemon tree sapling I grew from pip. The leaves smell amazing when gently rubbed and should make good lemon tea 🙂 ...Now I have a good start on germinating my grapefruit seeds, at last. Thanks to David The Good! After watching this great video, I know a few things I wasn't previously aware of 👍

I love hybrid and mutated trees! I'm crossing calamondin, lemons, oranges, mandarins, pomellos all across eachother and will see in a couple of years with the F1 generation and then even more interesting specimens within a couple more years woth the F2 gen! Will make a yt channel eventually too just for sharing my findings 😃✌️

About 1and ahalf years ago during a cold spell the main trunk on my 2 year old grapefruit tree suffered a frost " bite" whereby I cut about fouri inches off from the top of the trunk, Now many healthy branches have grown from the trunk but the trunk has not grown at all and has remained atthe same height. Just wondering will this tree ever produce any grapefruit? Thank you for any comments.

Hi i love this channnel! I have a california mandrin orange tree rom seed it is 3ft tall.

I was about to give up on my beautiful 4 ½ foot grapefruit because it's never produced even a blossom. But it's healthy and beautiful. Why give up? Because it's freaking heavy and I have to move it every Fall into my greenhouse and back out every Spring. But when you said it takes 8 years I thought "okay, I can't recall how many years I've had it, but another year or two can't hurt.

Great video! I understand it can take several years for citrus to produce from seed. I have several grape fruit trees that are 3 years old. If I graft them to a meyers lemon will that speed up fruiting?

I have a couple kumquat trees growing right now. Each only about a foot tall. I also have a 5 ft tall grapefruit tree that's been growing in a pot for a little less than 10 years. It's never produced any fruit or flowers but I consider it a family member it's been around so long lol. Is there any reason they don't produce fruit from a pot?

Not a drive-by gardener here 🙂 1st attempt to grow a lemon tree.... saved and washed seeds from organic lemons, put in a baggy w/ damp towel, nothing sprouted. 2nd attempt after learning to remove the outer shell of the seed. They sprouted and are now in organic seed starting mix for 2 weeks. No sprouts so far. Suggestions?

David, what about Navel oranges ? I have recently discovered these oranges and would love to grow a tree from seed. Problem is, of all the Navals I've eaten, none have seeds. I guess I'm going to find baby plants locally or on the internet. Unless you have a better idea.

LOL....You bought seedless limes David, here in Mexico in all the supermarkets they'll have 'limón sin semilla' and 'limon', the first is seedless and the second has seeds and although they're commercialized as seedless limes, once in a while you do get seeds which fortunately for me I go 3 out of a bunch of 12, bigger than the "regular lime", more juicier but of those 3 lime seeds all 3 came up, 1 instantly died, the other didn't do well and the last, the stem was brown, about a coupla weeks ago I made the mistake of pulling it and saw that it had a new growth, I quickly replanted it but I killed the baby Lime. :( I'm currently having trouble with my Palestine Royal Lime, it has dropped all the leaves but the stem is still green and it wants to grow new leaves out but its still "bald", A Eureka lemon is doing good its 12 inches tall and has developed a fork in the stem, is this good sign? I'm having more or less good luck with 4 limes and 1 mandarin, have them planted in the small "yoghurt" cups, checking this soil out artisanal mix? I had originally bought a soil with perlite in it and recommended for palms, succulents, cactus and citrus but years ago I'm pretty sure i just planted a baby Grapefruit and it took off well, I should video it or take a picture so you can see, its around 10-12 ft. tall and gives great tasting SOUR yellow-fleshed fruit, the original seed I got from a Ruby red, which was a combo of sweet n sour. Oops, sorry for the long comment, got carried away.

The salts in the water can harm nutrition uptake of citrus. But I believe all things, especially yrees have a type of "mind" consciousness 😄

Many citrus cultivars reproduce exact copies of the parent tree. The process is called polyembryony, more specifically, Nucellar embryony. Citrus cultivars are quite variable in regards to the production of Nucellar, vs Zygotic embryony. Dancy tangerine is 100% nucellar (all seedlings are identical to the parent tree. Temple tangor has 0% of it's progeny identical to itself. To avoid cutting the seeds, the fruit can be cut equatorially (midpoint between the blossom and stem ends) just through the depth of the rind. By subsequently twisting the fruits, the 2 halves will separate without harming the seeds. The seeds are located along the center of the fruit. For more rapid germination the seedcoat (testa) can be removed, but it's not required.

My grapefruit seedlings sprouted in a week in a damp paper towel in a plastic bag.

can someone explain to me, what he means from "growing from seed"? in the part where he describes people saying you can't grow fruit from seeds... I don't understand, all plants grow from seeds... you stick it in soil and it grows a plant.
