Thank you so much Diane! Did you know that the late August "Lily" cultivar is 46 bucks!!!! I said no way and I did the paper towel baggy method and got germination! So exciting! This particular cultivar is from neighbor's garden and no other hosta so I am hoping will produce true to parent! The very large leaves also ensure that there is very little light for weeds to grow underneath! A true bonus and gorgeous fragrant flowers!

Not everyone will understand..only the serious plant addict will; but I am so excited to try this...I feel like I won the lottery. I have about 65 variety and ordered another 15 this year and will probably order about 20-25 new variety by end of Spring 2014. I was always curious about propagation, I thought it was only by division, so this is very exciting to me. Can't wait till 2015. ...Can I jump up and down now....:-)

This is a great video. I love Hosta's too. When we purchased our home there were Hosta's covered over with leaves and brush. With a little TLC they are big and beautiful. I recently purchased some seeds on Ebay. Judging from your jar and what I paid, one could do quite well selling seeds! I'm most interested in seeing what I will REALLY get since the seeds are said to be a certain variety. Someone must not know that they are not specific. We shall see what I get. Sadly I jumped right into placing them in a pot without paper towel germinating but I will still make the best of it.

Hello, I planted a number of seeds in February & April in small pots, and probably have 30 hostas about 2-3 inches tall. It's November in Massachusetts and the hosta plant outside I took the seeds from is now completely yellow due to the change in seasons and it will come back next year. However, now about half of the seedlings I have inside are turning yellow too. My question is what happens to the seedlings over the winter? Are these expected to turn yellow, fade, then come back next year? Should I continue watering lightly over the winter? Thank you,

Mature hostas will be much more safer.. One year we had such a cold Spring that it did freeze the mounds of hostas all the way down but they did come back just fine.. I have been wondering if the stratification was really necessary. I got my seeds from eBay. They are tiny. They look like Poppy seeds. Different sort of hosta I guess. I am familiar with that kind as well. A lot of hosta don't produce seeds at all which is no fun.
@dianemummvideos
@dianemummvideos Жыл бұрын
The Hosta seeds will need stratification- (refrigerating for a couple weeks) before planting. Growing Hosta seeds is a simple procedure. Hosta seeds sprout nicely indoors, under normal house conditions, with temperatures running 60 - 70F. Use a "peaty" starter mix and just lightly cover the seed with peat moss

@@dianemummvideos Too late! They out in the front in a pot baking in the sun. Its only been a few days -- nothing yet. If they don't sprout however, I am not sure that will prove you right. The guy I got them from on eBay was very stingy with the number of seeds. I have read elsewhere its not necessary but it does help, resulting in more numerous sprouts.

@dianemummvideos
@dianemummvideos 3 жыл бұрын
They do not need a stratification (cold, moist treatment) to germinate. In the wild, all hosta species have the ability to reproduce by seed but some are more prolific than others. ... Either way, the resulting seed will be the mixture of two different sets of genetic material.
