I've tried to inform myself for years why they did not bloom and FINALLY watching your video I found the answer!!! Thanks a lot!

Thank you for this lovely and informative video. Hydrangeas are one of my very favorite plants. I remember playing in my grandmother’s yard where there were many mop head hydrangeas. About once a week I would cut some blooms, poke holes in a paper plate and make a hat, held on my head by a long ribbon across it. I am now 70 and am having a real problem with any yard work where I have to lean over or squat down, and my back is protesting any time I try to dig a hole in the ground. I haven’t ever tried container gardening, but after watching this video, I am sure this will be manageable and rewarding. Merci ❤ beaucoup 💐

Hello! Thank you so much for sharing this lovely story! I'm sorry to hear that you can no longer enjoy gardening as you used to. I think that container gardening definitely has its advantages and can be a good option for gardeners with limited mobility. Perhaps you could have someone install raised beds, taller pots or window boxes for you so that you can enjoy growing plants without having to bend over or squat 😊.

perfect youtube channel for me, lol. I live in France now, and we have a pretty long balcony, not too wide, but really long, south facing with little to no obstruction from other buildings, and it gets full sun from about 12pm to 6/7pm, like full sun. I tried growing begonias and dahlias, and I did get some blooms earlier in the summer, but they didn't tolerate the canicule/heatwave we had this summer, so while dahlias are my favorite flower, I'm trying to think of more hardy heat loving plants, and I was wondering about hydrangea, and since you're based in France and do balcony growing, I'm hoping I can learn some things here.

I am happy to hear that you found my channel helpful 🥰 Although my balcony is the opposite of yours - I only get a few hours of morning sunlight. This summer was tough, wasn't it? Even in the shade it was hard to keep plants happy... Oakleaf Hydrangeas (quercifolia) or panicle Hydrangeas (paniculata) can be grown in a full sun spot but you will have to water them a lot. But there are plenty of beautiful drought tolerant flowers in the alpines/rock garden category. Roses also love sunny spots and do well in pots 🌹

@17m2garden
@17m2garden Жыл бұрын
Hi! Oxalis Iron Cross is winter hardy so it can stay outside, yes I will keep it, I will probably just repot it into different pot, but Begonias on the other hand are frost tender so you have to dig the tubers and store them indoors during winter if you want to keep them. It is worth keeping your favorite Begonias, because they bloom even more beautiful the following year.

Thank you! If you have an unheated garage or a basement where it stays cold but not too low below freezing, that's where you could overwinter them. Give them a splash of water every now and then, like once a month, during that time, so that the roots don't dry out completely.

Hi! Thank you, I'm happy that you found this video helpful! Alga Bloom is a fertilizer that promotes flowering. Start using it once you notice those first flower buds. It will promote more blooms on ornamental plants or more fruit and veggies on your edible plants 🌸🍅🥒 Continue to use it weekly until your plant is done blooming (or done producing fruit/veg if you're gonna use it in your veggie garden too) Green Sensation is an additional booster, mix a tiny bit of it with Alga Bloom once your plant has some first flowers. I use these fertilizers weekly.

Hi! I'm assuming you are talking about Hydrangea macrophylla? Yeah it blooms on the branches from the previous year, so if you cut those back this spring, the plant will most likely not bloom this summer. Maybe a few lonely flowers will appear if you missed some stems. But don't worry! This summer the branches will grow back and on these branches it will bloom for you next year. Just don't prune it anymore 😉

Hi! Yes, I think it even says on the packaging to use it every 7-14 days. And as for your other question - If you're watering it well but it's still turning brown, maybe it's planted in a too sunny location, macrophyllas enjoy morning sunlight but protection from the scorching afternoon sun.

The leaves are very similar on all types of Hydrangea, macrophyllas have thicker and more glossy leaves and quercifolia leaves resemble those of oak trees. But to correctly identify a plant, you need to see its reproductive organs, i.e. flowers 🌸

@17m2garden
@17m2garden Жыл бұрын
The climate does not matter much when it comes to pruning, but if the winters are very warm, it can affect the formation of flower buds, cause the plant grows better when it has a cold dormancy period over winter. Hydrangea macrophylla doesn't require pruning. You can trim it lightly if you want, but do it immediately after they are done blooming.

Hi there! I've seen small Hydrangeas planted in window boxes etc in seasonal compositions, so if you have small enough plants and large enough pots, you can definitely give it a try! But if you're thinking of growing them for more than one season, you'll need to repot them to larger pots after a year or two, cause railing pots will quickly become too small and shallow for them.

@17m2garden
@17m2garden Жыл бұрын

Do you leave your hydrangeas out for the winter?
@17m2garden
@17m2garden 10 ай бұрын
Yes. Hydrangeas are winter hardy and actually need that cold dormancy period in the winter to bloom beautifully the next year. Unless you live in a very cold climate (zone 6 and below) you don't need to protect them or bring them indoors. With H.macrophylla (mophead) you have to be careful in the spring as the late frost can damage the newly forming buds.

@17m2garden
@17m2garden Ай бұрын
So sorry to hear that! With proper maintenance it should re-bloom, pruning would only affect the current season's blooms. If it's grown in the ground make sure to give it a good dose of slow release fertilizer in the spring and then again in summer, and don't forget to water during dry spells. But if it doesn't bloom despite all your efforts it might be a good idea to replace it with a new, perhaps more reliable variety.

I bought a pot of hydrangea Endless Summer, the Popstar variety. This is my first hydrangea. It starts to bloom, but it also has some brown buds. Why? Should I be worried? 😢

Hi! A few dead buds are usually nothing to worry about, it could just be the result of cold snaps in the spring, so just cut them off. But if the new flowers turn brown and the leaves also dry out, it probably means you're underwatering the plant. Also, don't forget that Hydrangea 'Endless Summer' is H. macrophylla, so be careful not to prune it at the wrong time of year.

So sorry to hear that 😔! Have you tried growing H.paniculata? They are quite easy to maintain.
