Hello Plant Lovers!

Hello Plant Lovers!

Ай бұрын

This week Plant Lovers we're taking another look at my Laelia anceps variety labeled 'Rosey Tiger' and going through all my painful learnings about just what this orchids needs to thrive in my environment. The irony is...they are REALY easy to grow in Melbourne!! I just managed to make a few mistakes!
We'll also take a passing look at Coelia bella for reasons that will become obvious if you watch the video!

"the bitter tears of my learning" I am howling with laughter and I can relate! I live in South Africa and my anceps are mounted on treated wooden pallets which are wall mounted. They flower well but not every year. The sun does turn their leaves red though and they DO need some sun. Tricky.

You are an amazing presenter! I am in Sydney, and moved recently. My balcony is due east, shaded by 3 huge eucalyptus trees, with a brick front wall. it is very shaded, but I do get 3-4 hours of dappled sun across the balcony in winter. I have 1x rose bush that is loving life in its spot, I figured if I can grow that, I can grow a cymbidium, as I have done so before. But I have killed many a phaelenopsis due to poor understanding thanks to loving them so much. So... I went and found one of each in a similar colourway (lemon to keep the yellow theme of my rose) and bought them home. Thanks to your channel, I have a much better understanding and a plan to rework my balcony garden for shade-loving orchids. No bugs, new growth, and a gentle water with bloom booster, I am looking forward to reworking my balcony garden with something new.

Hi Matthew! Just found the book new for US $53.00 s/h incl. I grow so many Australian orchids indoors in Washington state, that it will be very helpful to have the book within reach. Thanks for sharing it. 😎🥳

@@helloplantlovers good morning from Southern California 😀 my Coelia bella, which was a division from a friend I received almost 2 years ago, is growing in a terracotta pot, under cover, receiving bright indirect light. She’s potted in potting soil and a bit of bark pieces. I fertilize with water soluble fertilizer every other week during the growing season and once every 4-6 weeks in winter dormancy time. Throwing in a pellets of slow release during the growing season too. She’s a smaller plant for me but I had 2 flower spikes this last season, so feeling good about the regimen thus far. She does well outside year round with temps as low as 34 F at night for short periods and temps as high as 95 F shaded. No matter what I do her leaves always end up looking horrible but it doesn’t seem to phase her. They start off unblemished and perfect but in short order get blemished and raggedy looking. I’ve just accepted that’s the way of this one. Warts and all! 😉 BTW my Phaius Lady Ramona is almost done blooming. I’m going to try to stem propagate her and hopefully will raise a few good baby plants. If I can figure out how to send you a couple if I’m successful, and if you’re interested of course, I’ll let you know. I’m excited to try this!

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that is a hybrid, specifically anceps x gouldiana (Laelia Lookalike). There is a lot of variation in anceps, for sure, just something about that bloom is giving me pause.

Gorgeous orchid!! I think too large for me to cope with. What about a shallow wide pot? Any pot will be very heavy with your large baby!

potentially it is species Laelia anceps but this is the form of the species called 'rosey tiger'. It is still the species, but not a hybrid, but actually a variety of the species. maybe

Hi Matthew - thanks for this video. How difficult is it to find Laelia Ancep in Southern Australia & do you think it could be grown on vertical post/branch?

I found this one in Southern Australia - and I don't know to be honest. Probably better suited to Vanda baskets.

Oh no, as Matthew mentioned it, over 70% of the orchids are epiphytes!
@helloplantlovers

I think with all plants they will do what they want to do! This plant is very happy. There are so many species of orchids it is impossible to generalize but most ephiphytes will have adventurous roots.
