How to Grow Lavender from Seeds

Grow lavender plants from seeds is possible with some patience. Learn the easy method to sow lavenders indoors this spring and have them ready to plant in your garden in the fall. This is the first of a three part series on starting lavender plants from seeds. Did you know only English lavenders can be sown from seeds? This popular lavender variety is great for cooking, crafting and landscaping.

I look forward to part two. I'm in northwest Florida, it's hot here and I been thinking about direct sowing some seeds but my cautious side says I should wait until after worst heat of summer and then plant seeds in trays for transplanting out this fall or early 2023 spring. We rarely get below freezing and even when we do it only last a few hours over night even in dead of winter. I used to live out in the northwest in northern California near Redding, and then later in northwest Washington near Snoqualmie, that was back in the 1960s. I have plans for traveling out there in a couple years if all goes as planned with this place I just purchased last year with money from selling my homestead of 28 years so I could be debt free and own a small rural homestead. Now If all goes as I plan for it to then I'll have some sort of small RV, probably a van conversion to travel in and not have to find lodging. I look forward to that adventure, I want to also go up through Seattle to BC and visit Fraser Valley Rose Farm on Nicomen Island.

I forgot to say I wonder if you have any plans for a public farm again that I could visit? I don't know where you are in relation to Ontario Oregon but I was wondering if you have been to Andrew's Seed Company there? I learned about them from the YT show Garden Answers. I think that Family may be having some public events out at their place by the time I go out that way and I'd love to see it in person, especially the Hartley they put up behind their house!

I thought about their Hartley because you said your greenhouse blew away, you need yourself a Hartley! It won't blow away!

I would love to see your seedlings that you planted in the seed cells, and what's your next step once they have their true leaves. You are very informative! I am thirsty for more. Thanks for the video and the tips! No need for cold stratification of the seeds before planting? Just wondering because other people say that needs to be done. I also noticed on one of the seed packets that it show 98% germination. The packet of seeds I got say 80% germination. Any idea for such a difference?

Hi Thanks for sharing your method. I love lavender. Did you cold stratify them prior to sowing. My first batch straight into the garden was not successful 😢. Not one made it. I thought trying indoors next. Other than light do they require heat to germinate.

I am in central Illinois. I just got lavender seeds and I have no idea what or how I can plant them. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Start them in a seed starter mix or a good all purpose soil if you want to start them in containers. I have mine indoors in a south facing window and when they are big enough I will transfer each seedling into a 4 inch pot. Once I get my new greenhouse up, I will transfer them into it and when they are about two inches tall, I will cut it half way back so they will grow side shoots and bush up. When they are about 3-4 inches tall and wide I will plant them in the garden. I am also going to try staring some in the garden too. I will find a spot with 80 percent sun, around other plants with low water requirements, and in a good drainage soil. Good luck. 🍀
