Today's video shares the exact step-by-step process I use to grow Leeks, without fussing about starting them in modules. Leeks are a delicious and extremely hardy crop, being one of the few that have survived the harsh winter weather and are still going strong. Being a long-season crop, make sure you get your seeds in around 4 weeks before your last frost date to ensure they have the growing season to develop as big as possible.

Before uprooting the young leeks for transplanting, give them a really good water. This will help you get them out of the ground a lot more gently, breaking less roots. 👍

I grew leeks last year from seed and although they're not massive they're really good! Made soup the other day, dug out some spuds, carrots and a leek, plus 1 parsnip (i literally had a few germinate!) and onions that I harvested last year. Bit of seasoning, turmeric and cumin and added lentils, was absolutely delicious 😋

Huw! This is exactly the kind of guides we need, seed to harvest :D Last year, I (as always) sowed way more seedlings than I needed. Rather than chugging the spare winter leek seedlings away (multisown in trays), I popped them in between my lettuce. At first they got quite 'squished', at several points over the summer I couldnt even see them much. I thought "oh well", but I was baffled by what happened after the lettuce was finished / started bolting around mid july. As I cleared it out, tiny leeks were still holding strong, and within a few weeks had caught up with my "proper main crop" leeks. I want to test this further in the coming years - maybe theres a potential here to get even more food?

This is so timely! I’ve heard you and others gush about them so I am growing leeks multi sown in 6 cell trays. They’re coming along nicely and I’m going to experiment putting them under milk jugs, plastic tubs, and more to protect them from cold. My last frost date is April 15th so they’ll be in the cold a while.

Nice video - thanks. BUT in many areas of the UK allium leaf miner is becoming a serious pest - Iost my entire leek cropt to it last year. If you ain't got it yet..... well you will do soon! Aparently the only preventative measure is covering with mesh during early spring and autumn. Be warned!

You have my sympathies, so do I. It seems this pest came from eastern Europe in 2002 and is steadily migrating! 🤬 shop bought leeks are terrible, all the shops & supermarkets round here cut straight through the base, so I refuse to buy their rotting leeks! A good leek is a real treasure 😋

Leeks are a fairly new discovery for me, and are truly delicious. The flavor is a bit like peas, which was a wonderful surprise. I let some of my smaller leeks flower last spring because they look beautiful in your videos, and they were so lovely I couldn't stop photographing them along with all the pollinators they attracted :) Sadly, either deer or groundhogs ate my leeks this fall, and I never got a harvest. Definitely setting up a fence this spring!

Huw - living in a drier part of the world than you, I can testify to you that leeks absolutely adore rain! We tend to get less of it here in NW London than you get in Anglesey, but the past 8 months have been unusually wet by our standards but the leeks absolutely adored it. There are still leeks to harvest in the middle of April, when often in these parts, the leeks may have gone to seed 2-4 weeks ago. There's obviously a lot that gardeners can do to ensure they have healthy leek plants to put out, but ultimately, great vs good leeks tend to arrive with more vs less rain!!

Great video in time for the season. I've always put mine in a seedbed, lifted and given my leeks a "haircut" I trim the leaves and roots but always back fill with water (got this technique from John Seymour's fàmous book). I find it so therapeutic but might experiment with your method & John Seymour's method this year. You should have leeks named after you both ..2 great Welsh Gardner's.🤣

Cold is not an issue that we necessarily have to deal with here in Queensland Australia. 🤣🤣 However as we have a short season due to the heat I tend to harvest my leeks quickly then slice them in half lenght ways and then slice thinly. I then toss them into a plastic bag or contain and freeze. They keep so well and are easy to use, you just grab out the quantity you need and add to the recipe.
