This video is a detailed description of Leyland Cypress. Leyland Cypress is a fast growing screening plant that is very popular. Leyland can grow 2-3 feet in height in a single season and reach 50 feet plus over time. Leyland has many problems with wind, ice, insect, and disease issues. This fast growing evergreen conifer needs to be spaces more than 6 feet apart.

@@abielmoreno4551 so the 4 that I bought ended up having some difficulties at first. The whole "transplant shock" is definitely real. Took about 3 months or so for the needles to stop turning brown / yellow and falling out. After careful watering them, every other day, and putting some kind of mulch around the base, they basically are doing so well now. They have grown like 6 inches since I've had them. So an inch a month, not bad for the first year! They are green and looking better every day.

i planted a row of these in my back yard 12 years ago. they look gorgeous. I also planted a row of blue cypress behind them. Now after watching your video, i'm glad i did i will be watching to see if they fall over and when then do, i will still my row of blue cypres to act as a screen.

Very helpful, thank you. I planted 2 before seeing this video to screen the Westside of my home. I'm in zone 8a with triple digit summer temperatures, mild winters and dry heat. I think it'll be safe and less likely to topple over in my area. Rarely snows, sparse rain, no fires, no hurricanes, and no earthquakes.

Had two giant ones of these come down in the wind, did damage to the property, but provided a decent amount of firewood. I had no idea it was an overgrown Leyland Cypress until I started researching. Also, is it not possible to cap them at a specific height?

I got three to fill in an open area where a huge old 100 foot Poplar Tree came down. Our neighbors up the hill can look right into our house, so I am excited to have the privacy and don't care if they get tall.

I love conifers and have 12 acres to plant trees. One of my favorites is the Big Cone Pine - heaviest cones on this tree. The Leyland Cypress has a cone that is about the size of a pea! Cute!

Useful information. Thanks for sharing. I had to cut the main stem on one of mine because a buck deer scraped all of the bark off a section of it which killed it from that point to the top.

How do you prune the tree to keep from growing too tall, AND, how can you prune them to grow wider and fuller quickly as opposed to high? Do traditional pruning rules apply? Prune the top and it will instead grow wider? Please advise

I had the worst of luck growing arborvitae in zone 8 so I chose to plant these instead. When it gets to the height I need I plan on cutting the leader.

Planted two 6 ft tall 3.5 years ago on the edge of my patio and they are now 9+ feet tall and not any wider. Love them. Oh and no insect issues here.

I planted 4 of these but one grew about 2 feet in the first year. Since the day i planted it, it maintained a more green and healthier look than the rest. Wish they grew even lol

Great video. What would be a better alturnitive to this tree that has similar growth?I live in Paulden Arizona and my property is 2 acres and flat. We were thinking about lining the property with the tree. We want privacy and wind block. We get thermals and dust devils. Not often, but enough to have to dust the house 4-5 times a year.

I have cows on my property, will they eat the Leyland Cypress? I have had issues with my Nellie Stevens hollies. I want a good plant that creates a big border but won’t be eaten. I am in zone 9

You hit the nail on the head!!! Hurricane did blow my leyland cypresses sideways. roots are still in the ground but I have to prune back the 6ft wide lower branches to get to the top to trim it so i can try to stake it up to reroot. Is this a waste of time or will the bottom bush back out? thanks for the expert advice.

Cypress are nice and I’ve bought eight so far but I just saw a video that demonstrates that one side gets burnt. I am not sure if I’m going to continue purchasing them.

My leylands are 20-25'. I've been pruning them into a pretty tight column, but haven't topped them, should I?. The pruning's a job but they look great. I'ld like to keep them at 25'. Opinions on topping are appreciated.

I just planted one today lol. Oh, well. I think it will be just fine. I have a very large front yard and a noisy road. I just wanted one to kind of block out the traffic noise and provide a nice place for birds. I can decorate it at Christmas while it is small. It is far enough from house I won't have to worry about it hitting it in case of a storm when it is larger.

Is there a way to get my green giant trees to look more like a leyland cypress? I prefer the look they have such as the rain drop rounded bottom shape with the swirl pattern running up. Is it possible to prune the green giant when its young to look like that? Its just a unique look.

I am planning to plant the young cupressocyparis leylandii seedlings in a zone 7 where it's dry in the summer. The location is steep, sunny and a little bit rocky. How much water I have to provide for one leylandii (about 1 meter tall) per day? (or per week? ) Thank you!

We are in 9a and on 6.6 acres. We are wanting to plant 8 to 10 trees for some privacy. These seemed to be a good option. What would you suggest that is not crazy expensive that would keep leaves year round?

I am about to move into a house where the garden has a 'hedge' of what I think are Laylands around a dining area. They must have been planted years ago and are really tall but they were planted 2 foot apart which leads me to think that they were sold as 'hedges' anod not 'trees'. The shade and Density is such that no light passes and I have permission to take them down ( it's a rental ) so what sort of problems will I meet with roots etc given that there are walls nearby ? Should I have them pulled down depending on the root system, it cut down. I'm afraid of regrowth in the second case ! Thanks

I live in eastern n.c and the wife and i planted about 65 one gallon leylands across the back of our yard on the property line about 10 ft apart , we own about 8 acres and live in the country they are up to 20 ft tall now and about 15 yrs old, this yr we lost about 6 ,not sure why but will re,plant them once i get over back fusion and can cut the dead one,s down. And when it,s cooler..we love them perfect fence we have been through a dozen hurricane s a couple close tornadoes and a few ice storms which were not as bad as heavy wet snow that really pulled the branches down but have never lost one to wind or ice .but now in one year 5 died of something.

I couldnt get red tipped photinas to grow i tried everything. Just ordered 24 leilands. Need wind break and privacy really bad. I hope what I comes lives and grows. I live in Sahuarita, Az. Zone 9. Are these toxic to guineas, chickens, cats or dogs?

I just received 10 1 foot leyland cypress that I want to plant in my back yard to block my neighbor behind me and a sports bar to the left of our back yard. What do you recommend we plant these in the ground or in a plant container like the tree you had in your hands during your video? I want these trees to establish. I'm not sure what would be best. I now wish I bought 4 foot leylands.

I’m in Michigan, zone 5 & 6, and want to plant evergreen plants/bushes that are able reach to at least 10 feet. Primarily for privacy purposes and decoration. ... i live in western washington... we have very high winds out here on the regular... thought it would be great to have a huge leyland cypress hedge... groom it at about 25 to 30 feet... it sounds as though they are not a good wind break... what would you suggest... many people have the arborvitae but i would like something a bit different... soil ph 6.5- to 7.5 zone 6...

I planted 4 new Leyland Cypress last year and in the area I planted them I didn't realize it would hold water in that spot on our land. So they were drowning basically . I pulled them out of the ground and they are brown but still very pliable. are they going to come back? Or are they going to die?

My neighbor just planted 15 leland cypress tress to trim into a 6 foot hedge. Internet images show some good examples of groomed lelands as hedges. I'm concerned because he planted these giants 4 feet from my property line. How often must these be groomed to maintain a hedge that will not encroach onto my property? We are in Northern California (not San Francisco_) on the coast and have abundant water but could too much water contribute to root rot and result in wind throw of these trees?

Hi, I live in Nashville, TN. I planted a really small one maybe 1-2 ft in august 2015 and now in 2017 summer it is 5.5 ft. In the summer last year, i noticed some browning in the bottom half of the tree, so I pruned those small branches and I started watering the tree every now and then- just the leaves and not the roots so much. I have noticed that since then the tree is much healthier, the browning is almost gone and I hope it does not come back again!!! Btw, I planted another one last year:-)

I have the same question, but about a close relative, the Murray Cypress, which is hardier and looks absolutely similar, and possesses similar qualities, such as being great for hedges and screens. Have you found an answer about transplanting them? At which height were they at the time of your question and how long had they been in the ground?

I bought 6 Leyland Cypress and am going to plant them around my yard. I wasn't aware they get so tall. A friend recommended them but if I had done my research I wouldn't have bought them because they get so big. I live out in the country so I don't believe I'll have any problems that I don't already have with the ungodly pine trees that rot from the top down. I'm just wanting to beautify my property. Is it ok to plant shrubbery around the Leyland? If so what type is best? I would like to plant shrubbery that flowers.

My Mother was a horticulturists and she'd tell us about plants as we worked them. One of her sayings about perennials and shrubs is "They sleep, they creap and they leap." Expect 3 years till you get full growing power from new plants.

Bamboo is extremely invasive and you need a backhoe to dig it out. Terrible stuff. Please do some research before planting!

Hi, thanks for the video, it’s very informative. Bit of a strange question, but would a line of these trees spaced approximately 2 feet apart be strong enough to withstand an impact by a car once the trees are established in the ground? The reason I ask is that my yard is adjacent to a busy street and I want some protection, but I hate the look of metal poles, so I was hoping that I could find some trees to do the job. If these trees won’t work, can you recommend some similar privacy trees which might be better? Thanks!!

I had 6 of these planted along my backyard property line in early May. I live on Long Island, NY. I'm noticing that I am starting to get some browning on the lower branches of a couple of these new plantings. Any idea why? Anything I can do to remedy the situation? BTW, I planted these to replace 50ft. tall white pines that were overtaking my yard. We have not removed teh white pines as yet, but rather raised the canopy up 8ft. and planted a leyland cypress in between each of the pines. The goal is to raise the canopy each year another 2-3 feet as the Leylands start to fill in. Is this advisable?

i have 6 leyland cypress in a row i have a 3/4 water line frpm the well with a spray head at each tree the first is abut 12 ft tall the last is about 6 ft tall they are like stare steps so the amount of water so the diff. growth they are 5yrs old i taped another line and back fed the water from #6 to #1 to try to balence the hight they love water i have not had any brown problems so wet good often

I live in Central Pennsylvania. I live up against a major highway and was considering a row of Leylands to shield the view and road noise. Will these grow in the shade? Some afternoon sun, but they will be up against a small wooded area. Will it shield the road noise in that setting? any other suggestions in addition to the Leyland?

+Joe Ford I don't think Leyland Cypress would do well with less than six hours of direct sun. I have a playlist on my channel called screening plants. Go through some of those and see if anything would work for you

We live in Western PA and planted Leylands along our driveway. They did well until this winter. Now they are mostly brown and getting worse. This is the second winter for them, this past summer they grew well and were very green. Can you tell me if these can be saved. We had ice storms that covered them this winter.

It is likely wind burn. If the roots stay frozen and the tree can't get water, the winter wind can be very damaging. I think you will know by the end of April, if they are going to grow out of it.

We are in Clearwater Florida, Zone 9 I believe.. I love the Thuja, or Emerald Arbaveti

+Rcnages In zone 9 I would just consider using a Holly, like Nellie Stevens or oakleaf Holly. Or maybe a juniper like Sky rocket or spartan.

Im in coastal zone 8b, Thuja grows well here, and mines been hit by 4 hurricanes, but you have to keep them trimmed down to about 12 feet

What do you suggest as a good alternative? I need a tree like this that grows 15 to 20 feet high! Cheers.

Thanks. This is what I thought but thank you anyway. Twenty years ago my neighbor told me I was 'making a lot of work for myself'. Sixty feet later, he was right.
