How to Grow Lion's Mane Mushroom From Start to Finish

In this video I will show you each step in the process to grow lions mane mushrooms in bulk. This mushroom is amazing as a meat replacement and for healthy living.
Lion’s Mane is believed to be able to prevent the neuronal damage from amyloid-beta plaques, which accumulate in the brain during Alzheimer’s disease and reduces the symptoms of memory loss. We believe that now more than ever we need to be conscious of our health and boost the immune system that is responsible to protect us from viruses, bacteria and other disease-causing pathogens. I hope this video is helpful in teaching you how to grow your own!

great vid - well done. clearly youve got this tek totally dialled in , your results speak for themselves but whats the reason you sterilize for 2.5 hrs when nearly every other cultivator and author that ive read recommend 1.5hrs... I ask because while I can usually grow other types of fungi successfully , my last two attempts with LM have both trich'd out on me (bucket tek and bag method). im being as aseptic as I can and using a laminar flow hood so your vid has me wondering if the longer pressure time might be the answer.

The hardwood pellets are not available where I live because you don't need heating where I live. and to order it from someone else it will cost me around $80 per 20 kg bag and that is too much.

Thanks for this beautiful work craft. I really appreciated. My concern is to cut growing time, can we actually prepare substrate bag and grain bag all in one bag? And inoculated into this bag? Basically one bag all in? Because transferring from grain spawn to substrate bag might cause the contamination? I don't have glow box either laminar flow hood.

Hey man, great vid, really informative! I had a few questions if you wouldnt mind 🙂. In the final stage when you have mixed all the spawn with the substrate you say to let it colonize for a further two weeks then you say to watch for pinning etc. I wanted to know during those 2 weeks if they are supposed to be in any indirect daylight (Or synthetic daylight) and if so is there a set number of hours to mimic its natural cycle or anything? I assume warm/room temp is needed again temp wise as well. Thanks!

You should try to keep the tent around 70-75 degrees F, which isn’t that warm. You get denser mushrooms when it’s colder and more fluffy when hot. Humidity and fresh air play a more significant role in my opinion.

The substrate doesn’t need full darkness while colonizing but either way it doesn’t hurt it, and darkness may help prevent premature pinning. As with most mushrooms I grow I keep temps around 68-70 F.

Humidity controller set at 85% humidity and exhaust fan set to run for 5 minutes every hour and an in-line fan to bring fresh air in every hour as well. 70 F temp is good. Don’t want to breath in spores so that’s why you have to exhaust the tent outside a window. Wear a mask if you enter the tent while it’s dropping spores.

Great video! What is the advantage of spawning the substrate from grain spawn as opposed to inoculating the substrate from spawn syringe?
@SporenSprout
@SporenSprout 5 ай бұрын
The grain adds nutrition, and provides many inoculation points as a carrier for the mycelium. The mycelium can have a hard time colonizing fast without grain. It is possible to do but will result in smaller fruit bodies and yield.

Great video!! Love the step by step. Question: why do you line the pressure cooker with aluminum foil when sterilizing the grain? And then I noticed you put water in the cooker when you sterilized the substrate? Beginner here.. just wondering if I should set it up the same way and why. Thanks!

A pressure cooker should have 2-3 inches of water at the bottom. Use some kind of rack insert to elevate the material above the water. The foil on the sides I found helped prevent bags from burning by touching the sides when packed full. So I kind of just kept it as a liner. I have an all American electric sterilizer now that I do not have any problems with the bags touching the sides 🤷🏻‍♂️

In response to this same question about why are you lining the pressure cooker with foil, I noticed that you are already using an all American in the video. However, the link in your details does not lead to an all American pressure cooker, but it is a different one. Why is that? Which one are you actually recommending? it looks like you used two different pressure cookers in this video.

Hey great video , can you share with us the ideal temperatures for spawn grow and for fruiting ? thank :)
@SporenSprout

For spawning 75-78 F. Try to keep temps low 70-75 F for fruiting.

Never realized how involved it is to grow these mushrooms. I’m new to this and this might be a stupid question but why the intense sterilization when naturally they grow out doors exposed to all elements? Apologies for my ignorance if this triggers frustration for some.

It doesn’t need misting if it’s in a humidified grow tent. If you don’t have a tent you can mist around it. Don’t mist directly on the fruiting body.

Oh my gosh! I just heard about mushroom grow bags today for the very first time. I don’t have the financial resources nor the confidence to do what you showed, but you did an AMAZING job demonstrating!!! When those mushrooms grow, can you dehydrate them and then powder them? If so do you know what temperature and how many hours? I have the opportunity to buy some mushrooms that have grown so I want to see if I can dehydrate them and then powder them. Thank you very much for your video!!! 🙏
@SporenSprout
@SporenSprout 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! 🙏 Yes you can use a standard food dehydrator on the lowest heat setting and it usually takes around 18-24 hours to be completely dry depending on how full you pack the dehydrator.

Excellent video brother. Going to save this one for sure. I've been having a problem with my pressure cooker melting holes in my spawn bags! Also, the substrate bags seem to take like 6 weeks plus to colonize! Maybe I did not use enough spawn??
@SporenSprout
@SporenSprout Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! If your bags start melting holes it is most likely from the pressure cooker being too hot and not having enough water in the bottom. You can also try lining the sides with aluminum foil, that seemed to help in the presto 23 quart I used to have. It is not good for substrate to take that long, you should definitely add more spawn (I use a 3LB spawn bag for 4 5 LB substrate blocks) and make sure you shake the crap out of it to evenly distribute every grain, it is very important that the grains reach the bottom of the bag to ensure quicker colonization. Also, lions mane mycelium is much thinner than other species so it is often fully colonized before looking so. Good luck!

What is the chance being successful without using the laminar flow hood? Just ordered everything you recommended on your list, except laminar hood.
@SporenSprout
@SporenSprout 10 ай бұрын
The hardest part is dumping the colonized grain into the substrate bag. You can use a still air box instead of flow hood but there will be some bags that are contaminated because it is not ideal.

should I put the cuts on the plastic bags just right after sealing it up or should I wait for 2 weeks and then do the slits? please help
@SporenSprout
@SporenSprout 2 жыл бұрын
Wait 2 weeks. After inoculating the substrate, it will need to fully colonize before fruiting. With lions mane it tends to prematurely pin either way.

Do you not anything but water to the rye medium? No calcium? Also, would you not pasteurize rather than sterilize the substrate?
@SporenSprout
@SporenSprout 2 жыл бұрын
The growth you see in this video is without calcium. Only supplement is wheat bran. You cannot pasteurize substrate that is supplemented. I only pasteurize when using straw or cococoir really.
