This video covers all things bamboo, from the incredible way in which bamboo grows in just one season to how different types of bamboo respond to our climate. We look at four different varieties of bamboo, both running and clumping, including golden bamboo, arrow bamboo, Fargesia bamboo and the beautiful black bamboo. In addition we cover multiple different ways of maintaining healthy bamboo in general, but also controlling the spread of running bamboo and the different ways this can be achieved.

good job I grow about 30 varieties of bamboo in the north of Spain To control the roots of the bamboo I grow it on terraces, in this way I delimit the propagation of the roots You could also grow in your garden a beautiful variety of banana resistant to cold, even -23 degrees, I sent some young to Sweden recently and they are growing happily there, it would give a very special touch to your paradise the bamboo phyllostachys aureosulcata spectabilis, produces yellow and reddish shoots with really incredible green stripes, also, 2 out of 10 of its shoots grow in a zip-zap shape, that makes it very attractive There are also bamboos that produce delicious edible shoots like edulis, which is another incentive to have bamboo at home. a greeting

Hi Teresa (hope i spelled your name right) how are you? I just love the way you present your videos and you are one of the very few people i have subscribed to. I am currently attempting to relocate several bamboo plants that have a good size root ball. Can i cut them into smaller size on the root ball so i can plant them in a line for a border? And if so should i dig a trench and line with plastic to contain the roots? Im not sure of the species. I want to say they are golden something. Please forgive me i am brand new to this. They have been in the ground for several years and came out with a large root ball. And finally , will they grow back if they were cut down? Im really hoping i can revive these beautiful plants they once were. My neighbor was going to throw them away. I apologize for the lengthy message and all my rookie questions. This is really helpful. i started to grow my compact bamboo by the fence without root block. As do not want it spread to neighbour‘s, i just remove the new shoots which are too close to the fence. i am wondering if this controlling is good enough and if the roots will still spread underneath to neighbour's - although it's not the running type. would be really appreciated to hear your comments.❤

Thank you! The clumping / compact bamboo will not run. However, the size of the plant will increase over the years, which means the circle the rhizomes and canes grow in, will get wider (hope that makes sense). Our clumping bamboo is actually starting to grow through the fence a little bit after all these years, because the overall plant size has become so wide that it reached the fence line. I would recommend to work with root block along the fence also for clumping bamboo if it is planted so close to your fence line where it may grow into the neighbor's plot. Just check how deep your rhizomes grow and adjust the root block depth accordingly in case you are putting one in. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions :)

@@OurJapaneseGardenEscape a small 3ft bamboo was planted 2 months ago in a vacant plot ,it has got no fence and so stray cattle eats its entire foliage, fencing is not possible due to certain issues , In such a case ,will it still grow tall enough beyond the reach of cattle ? place:India- tropical monsoon climate

@@TarunKumar-vx1hq I would recommend to block it off somehow from the cattle to avoid that the entire foliage gets eaten. Once it is established, it will grow tall depending on the type of bamboo you planted.

@@TarunKumar-vx1hq That's great, because the bamboo may not survive if all the leaves are eaten off. Once the perimeter is up then the bamboo can grow undisturbed and will grow tall. Let me know how it goes!

One suggestion about controlling the growing area of rhizomes would be to locally change the soil properties, see it as geological fence, to stop natural spreading. There must be some kind of soil unsuited for bamboo roots. Dig and replace all around. In nature, there are always limits to trees because of natural soil composition, so I guess it should be the same with bamboo trees.

@8:00 is the Arrow bamboo also called "Fargesia robusta Campbell" i ask because i have this bamboo and it looks exactly the same with the green & white stripes Iam in the UK and this survives harsh winters down to -22 i have heard. available from Baboo Kings in the UK for a live clump through post of around 10 shoots 1ft tall each for only £12.00.

No, arrow bamboo is pseudosasa japonica, and it can get wild... She says it's less running than a golden bamboo... It's true in her garden, now, it can change or be different. I've seen this bamboo run 6meters under the grass before growing new shoots.

Thanks for the video. I noticed when you were showing a video about Japanese Maple trees that there was some bamboo behind it. I also have some type of bamboo in my backyard, and recently planted several Japanese maples in front of it. If I try to control it with a spade, I was wondering if that might damage the roots of the young Japanese maple trees. I previously used to control it just by removing the canes when they first popped up.

Thank you! Good question. Since bamboo is native to warmer climates and not a deciduous plant that requires a change of season/temperature I would say yes. Make sure the air does not get too dry (like from heating), provide enough light and water moderately just so that the soil stays moist. Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

Hello U.S. Skull Hunter, thank you very much. We really appreciate your positive feedback. Fantastic that you are planning to build a Japanese garden. Here in zone 6 we have hot summers and fairly mild winters these days with the occasional snow. Another factor to consider is the humidity, which is around 30% during the winter months and spring and then goes up to between 60% and 90% during the summer. We do get thunderstorms here in summer, which usually takes care of the watering of the garden ;) The climate here is not constant anymore though, so every year is somewhat different, like for example this very long and cold spring we had this year and then it suddenly changed and got hot. In some way this changing climate is noticeable on how the plants grow, so also this is a bit different every year. Hope that helps a bit to compare it to your local climate. Hi, I've got a question If you've got some time!, I planted my "Chinese bambú" which looks like your golden bambú but with green canes and fuller leaf growth, it is a running type, can't really see the canes unless you go and look for them although the leaves are relatively small it grew about 12 foot hight and it keeps growing where I planted it first which tells me it has no issues with the climate or the soil, however I cut some canes and planted them in a 2 foot wide channel with concrete in both sides in the same house just maybe 30feet away, still gets plenty of sun all day, the plan was to make it grow in a straight line which all together becomes an L shape channel around an open roof garage, this canes only grew to about 3-4 feet and stopped, it's not growing any further nor is it sending more shoots out as new growth, i water it every other day but after a year and s half it has not gone the way I planned, should I trim the whole thing down to the ground to stimulate new shoots now that it has established itself? should I continue waiting or just trim it a bit? Thank you

If you cut the canes as in reducing their length, they will never grow taller again. They will just produce new leaves. If you plant a rhizome and new canes are growing out, they will most likely be shorter because it is like starting a new bamboo plant. Young bamboo plant canes will be thin and short and as the entire plant ages, the new canes will grow out thicker and taller. It will take a few years for a young bamboo plant to reach the full height. Hope that answers your question.

As a European perhaps you can help me regarding the best type of bamboo I could grow. I have a homestead in Croatia in the mountains of Northern Istria, most probably zone 8. The temperatures can range from the worst at -15.0 to 33 degrees Clesiius at 700 m elevation, limestone Karst, would be groan in loamy soil in the bottom land sink hole type garden. I want the most robust bamboo with the largest diameter stalks that can be grown in these conditions. Any suggestion???

Thank you so much! For starting bamboo from seed I would recommend teh following: 1) soak the seeds in warm water for a day 2) plant the seeds in normal plating soil and keep the soil moist (not wet) 3) put the pots with the seeds in a miniature greenhouse indoors 4) keep the greenhouse warm and at room temperature and make there is enough light (a bit of direct sunlight is ok, but not too much) -> the seeds should germinate after about 10 days, but it may also take longer 6) once they sprouted, keep them moist and warm and repot them after about a month into larger pots 7) when to plant them outside depends a bit on the climate zone you are in; if it is cold in winter, I'd wait until the next spring to plant them in the garden Hope it works out!

Thank you I learned a lot. Mainly about the root block. Where is it available? I love bamboo and just bought a plant about 2.5’ tall. I’m planting it next to a cinder wall. But I don’t want it growing into my neighbors yard or they will complain. So I need to add the root block before I plant. Do you know if bamboo can damage or lift a cinder block wall? Thank you. I would check if your local nursery has root block or just check online. I recommend putting the root block in before you plant, it will make everything a lot easier. They usually come with a metal closure, so make sure the ends of the root block are closed off properly (if you are laying it in a circle). If you have a running type of bamboo it may grow underneath the wall or even through a gap in between the cinder blocks. A properly laid root block should avoid that, but I recommend checking for rhizome growth on a regular basis. Hello to L.A. :)

I cannot see any issue with that, it should be fine. The clumping bamboo hedge in the video is actually planted on a slight slope :)

Thank you, very useful video. I'm in UK, my fargesia Rufus dropped all it's leaves. It's in it's first year of planting in heavy clay soil, southwest facing garden so full sun, partial shelter. I think maybe not enough water or fertiliser based on what you said in your video. Is it too late to revive it?

Thanks a lot. I made the experience that bamboo is sometimes a little sensitive when being re-potted or replanted. It may have been too dry for a while? It should be kept moist at all times (not wet). I do not think it has anything to do with fertilizer, because plants coming from nurseries are usually well fertilized. It may just be the change of environment. However, what I would address is the soil. It may have issues with this heavy clay soil, so maybe you could mix a bit of normal planting soil in it. I would keep it moist, alter the soil a bit if possible and just wait and see what happens over the coming weeks. If it survived, it will get new leaves soon.

@@OurJapaneseGardenEscape thank you, I kind of hoped it was just the transition from nursery to garden I'll definitely try improving the soil structure by mixing with planting soild as you suggest then hope things improve now the spring is upon us. Maybe one day my bamboo will be as beautiful as yours .

I live in Grants Pass, OR. I have 4 or 5 different kinds of bamboo. My black bamboo is seeding. I can't tell if it is dying. I also have a huge bamboo. Sold as timber bamboo. It is doing very well and my golden bamboo is also not flowering. Thank you for your information.

Can you tell me if that motivational thing about a bamboo spend 5 years to grow before get out of the dirty, there is a type of bamboo that takes 5 years to start to grow? Or thats just fake? Nice video! ♡

In my experience, when planting a young plant of running bamboo, not a lot happens in the first 2-3 years after planting. Then, in year 3 or 4 the bamboo starts running. However, when the bamboo starts to run depends on the local growing conditions and the local climate. So, it could possibly also start sooner to run after planting. I am not familiar with a specific type of bamboo that takes 5 years to start running, but there are many different cultivars. Thank you!

We found the best way is to tie a rope (not too tight) around the entire plant and attach it to a pole or fence or similar to keep the plant upright. Over time and as the canes get thicker, they should stat to stand up.

Thank you for this video. I live in Australia and have just purchased 4 x clumping bamboo (Alphonse Karr) and transferred them into very large pots for screening purposes. It is very hot here (summer) 38 to 40 degree heat. They are getting some shade from tall established palm trees. My issue is…. One of my bamboo trees appear to be dying. At present, they are approximately 1.5m tall. I have changed the soil, fertilised well using a liquid fertiliser as recommended by my nursery. Watering well everyday, and I even sat the entire plant into a huge bucket of water for 4 days before repotting, but all to no avail. I’m reluctant to cut it back in case it won’t shoot again. The stems are very thin. All the leaves look dead and crunchy, while my 3 other plants are doing fine. Please help me and tell me what is wrong. Thank you 🙏 ❤

Thank you. I made the experience that bamboo is sometimes a bit 'offended' when moved to a new location meaning the leaves will turn brown and fall off. Normally, they will develop new leaves if the new conditions are right, so I would maybe wait a few weeks before you cut the canes (new canes will grow from the rhizomes in the ground anyway). Based on your description, I guess the bamboo plant may have had too much water. Bamboo should be kept moist, but not wet and sitting it in water for days may have not been ideal and watering every day may be too much water. So, I would recommend to water a bit less so that the soil just stays slightly moist and wait and see if new leaves start to develop.

@@OurJapaneseGardenEscape thank you for replying. I have moved it to a more shaded area atm to see how it goes. Still looks dead and dry, but I’ll persevere. Cut back watering twice a week now, plus we had about 4 drops of rain the other night 😂😒 lol. If it hasn’t picked up by the start of autumn, I’ll consider cutting it back to help it shoot again. Cut and dried bamboo is very strong. As far as I know this is just a normal bamboo cane used for fishing.

There is one clumping type of black bamboo I know of called Fargesia nitida 'Black Pearl'. The best thing is to check the latin plant name at the nursery or online shop. If the name is 'Fargesia' something, it is a clumping type of bamboo. If the name is 'Phyllostachis' something, then it is a running type of bamboo.

The new canes coming out of the ground can be mowed. But the rhizomes growing under the ground will still continue growing and spreading. This is why the safest option to control running bamboo which is planted without a root block, is to dig out the rhizomes once a year. You can check out the "Japanese Garden Weekly Work #3" video, where we show how to dig out the bamboo shoots that have grown to far (last two chapters). Hope this answers your question :)

I understand that phyllostachus aureus and phyllostachus nigra are the same species but I never see them mixed together. Is there any downside to doing that? Do they have the same rate of growth for example?

It is normal for bamboo to shed leaves. And, yes, they grow again during the growing season (depending on the climate you live in). We actually keep most of the fallen bamboo leaves on the ground around the bamboo, so they can serve as a natural fertilizer.

It depends on the look you want to achieve. Our clumping bamboo is called 'Fargesia rufa' and it produces shoots that start to hang over after they have grown out. If you prefer a more upright growing one, then the 'Fargesia murielae' is a nice choice :)
