This video is a detailed description of Minerva Rose of Sharon. Minerva has large lavender colored flowers throughout the summer. Like most Rose of Sharon, Minerva is drought tolerant and low maintenance. Like all Hibiscus, Rose of Sharon get many pest but are definitely worth the trouble.
Hibiscus syriacus 'Minerva'
Althea

As a child This was a shrub/tree my dad planted in Indiana because it required nothing after the first 6 mos. As an adult I moved to Houston (zone 9) and planted this because I knew how sturdy it is. I just learned how to propagate from the stems - boy am I excited to get new plants for free

My Mom has three in her shady, shady front yard that I pruned. I kept many of the cuttings and have them rooting in the laundry room. I WILL be planting them ALL OVER THE PLACE! I get more sun than she, so they should do GREAT!

You weren't kidding about deer loving this plant. I was given one 3 years ago and deer kept it cropped to the ground. This year I dug it up and put it in a different area. I finally get to see blossoms. Such a beautiful plant.

Thank You Jim I am pleased to say I have got three different type of the Rose of Sharon for our co=operative Housing building. I have worked in the gardens for 15 years, TWO years ago we had work done on foundation so the gardens took a big hit and we had shrubs and trees growing in them So I cleaned out the gardens as for I am the prime worker that keeps it looking wonderful. Planted a lot of Tulips, Crocus, Daffodils and Dwarf Irises. Going to be the best Garden yet, Hope to get a lot of Butterflies and maybe HummingBirds. Thanks for your insight Jim.

Yep, that's what ours are. We were laughing the entire time planting them because we almost literally threw them in the ground one night around midnight. They love sun and dry or maybe it's just because I don't water them. Ever. That was last year. This year I just got my first white blooms. They are so beautiful and healthy, my neighbor or partner in crime were just outside talking about how beautiful they are. You literally cannot kill them. Her house is covered in them like a jungle. Up here in the mountains they are a dime a dozen or free whatever the case may be. Mine were free as she came marching up the back carrying these dead looking branches. I know one has the red center, one is white which I just found out. One looks like it will be pink or purple. I don't know if I have 4 or 5 in the corner of my property. I can't wait for them to pop and I look forward to pruning these in the winter. Looking forward to the hummingbirds visiting and the bees.

I have 2 of these in 7a on the South side of my house full son. Initially I didnt like them but I cut them way back 2 years ago. They are about 7 feet tall and been here for 15 yrs at least. After cutting back they have exploded with growth and flowers. They are now one of my favorites. Dont plant these if you're scared of bees. Mine are covered in bees all summer. Dont bother me though.

I have one of these planted on the corner of my new house. I had no idea what it was for a couple of years until I finally decided to have three big trees cut down because they had limbs hanging over my house and they shaded the entire front of my yard. That next Summer (This year) this rose of Sharon bloomed! And I was so glad I didn't just cut it down because I thought it was a weed. It's huge! There's a rose bush behind it that I plan on digging up and moving. It literally gets zero sun where it is. It's never bloomed.

I love these and they grow wild where I live. Stunning. Neighbor ripped some out of her overgrown yard threw four of them in my yard last year. Just sat looking down the mountain and I saw something white. I thought, they can't be blooming I just looked at them yesterday. Sure enough the most beautiful white flowers I have ever seen. Then I looked at the other three, maybe four, I know one is a bleeding heart as one flower popped out after my neighbor threw them in the ground. One looks pink or purple getting ready to pop and they are on the very corner of my property. Beautiful. I wish I could say I did anything to them. I literally did nothing and by nothing I mean I helped her throw them into the ground one night. We were laughing the entire time, just thinking these will never live. They are the healthiest thing in my garden. I'll prune 'em and that's it. I don't like big shrubs. I'll pick the dropped seeds and seedlings so they don't take over my 1/2 acre.

I have one in my bedroom and the other one in the restroom. The one in the restroom is a south facing window and that is the one that leafing out the one in my bedroom has a north-facing window it hasn't grew new buds yet. And it is more warm and humid in the restroom as well my room is just moderate humidity and temperature.

I'm going to cut them back to get some side growth...can I do it now, so as to get new growth as side shoots before winter? Or do i need to wait for winter when the plants are dormant? Hello! Great video very informative. I have 5 of these beautiful bushes. 2 are dead dried, the other 3 hardly bloomed. I don't really know why? We were not watering very much then we added a drip line and didn't seem to help, we haven't pruned them in the 2 years of living here because of fear making more damage than good. What should I do? @@doloresm7396 well yes, if u want plants that spread quickly in all directions, this is a good one. My problem was controlling the offshoots because they are like baby trees and weed eating isn’t practical. Also, be aware that Japanese beetles are very attracted to them. They do put out some gorgeous blooms however and grow large very quickly, so thats a plus.

Hello Jim, I know these plants tend to get large, but I used to have a Rose of Sharon (I don't remember the species) that I used to treat like a hedge on each side of my driveway. I maintained them about 4 feet and they bloomed all summer all over. Though they were thinner at the bottom than at the top. Anyway, I'm looking for a shrub to plant in a garden bed off of my patio that I want to maintain around 3-4 feet tall and probably no more than 3 feet wide, that blooms all summer. I've been considering a Rose of Sharon because of how they bloom so much and require little attention. Will the Minerva Rose of Sharon take well to pruning to keep it around 3-4 feet tall? Will it bush out at the bottom or become more top heavy like the previous ones I had years ago? If they do take well to pruning, approximately how often will it be necessary to prune them to keep them around 3-4 feet? Thanks in advance for your response!!!

I'm not sure how harsh of temps your talking about my advice would be to temporarily plant or heel them into the ground pot and all til next year. Or put the pots close together and pile leaves or mulch over them. But rose of Sharon is more or less lol a weed so I think you'll be fine

Good informative video! QUESTION: I know that the common Rose of Sharon shrubs produce many seedlings that can be invasive and require pulling up every year. Do you have many seedlings come up under your mature Minerva plants?
