In the previous version of this video (now deleted) I got muddled up an said that I plant 200 onions/m2, what I actually meant was 200/bed and my beds are 2m2, so that's 100/m2. This video corrects that error.
In this video and it's associated eBook I explain how to grow onions and shallots for high yields using high intensity growing techniques. The eBook also covers the other alliums: leeks, garlic, salad onions etc.
There's full details on sowing, planting, harvesting and storage, with lots of additional video content. You can find the eBook here:
www.notion.so/Growing-onions-...
The video also features my app for managing your garden, including seed packets, sowing and more, details on that can be found here:

We used to have three allotments in my family, mine (Steve), my wife's (Debbie) and my middle daughter's (Jennie) and you will see these featured in many videos. We’ve recently handed Jennie’s back to the council as over the years we now grow more on the other two plots than we did on all three a few years ago. We also have a small kitchen garden at home.
All of the plots are managed in an integrated fashion, so don't expect to see the usual mix of veg on each plot. I do most of the planning and seed starting. We each have our own plots, but we all help each other out.
Debbie's plot is mostly full of perennials, it's an ornamental plot. We did a lot of work to keep the weeds down and Debbie's approach is inspired by the TV programme The Ornamental Kitchen garden.
My plot is all about experimental growing, maximum productivity and year round abundance. As with all of the other plots I did a lot of work to control the weeds, but it's a high maintenance plot. I'm always planting, harvesting, experimenting and generally having a great time.
Collectively the plots deliver an amazing abundance of fruit and veg all year round. Debbie, Jennie, Jon and I are effectively self sufficient in veg all year round and in fruit for much of the year. During winter we sometimes have enough surplus to feed our local family. During the rest of the year when the surplus from our house garden comes on stream we have surpluses in some crops for quite a few friends as well.
This video provides an overview: • The big picture of our...
I do an update of the allotments, roughly twice a month, you can find the tours here:
• Full allotment tour as...
Our approach to allotment life is to: grow as much as we possibly can, to be self-sufficient in veg all year round and in fruit in season, to give away our surplus to friends and family, and to have as much fun as possible. For more on self sufficiency check out these videos:
• Super quick update on ...
We are not slaves to gardening though, I spend about 12 hours a week on the plots (on average) Debbie and Jennie a lot less. We keep nudging that down as we eliminate non-productive work: like grass cutting, weeding and watering as much as practical. We are newbie gardeners, only starting the allotments in 2016.
I'm a bit obsessive about the nutrient density of the veg that we grow and making the plots easy to work because it's through this allotment lifestyle and food that I've overcome a debilitating auto-immune disease.
I'm always aware though that it might not last so I make sure that I don't work too hard, eat as much organic fruit and veg I can and design the plots so that I can still work them when I flare up.

Another excellent blog steve. Luckily for me I discovered your channel very early on last year and have been following ever since. Your advise has helped me no end and have created two low tunnels and I am currently planning and growing lots of veg in containers due to space and a severe lack of allotments in my area. Keep up the good work really appreciate it.

Terrific video Steve! I really like growing alliums too. I go for the dense plantings and smaller size onions too. Also, I'm amazed at all the varieties of alliums.

Brilliant advice as always Steve. The ebook is really packed full of great info, I was still having issues with germination rates despite temp and light monitoring. Thanks to your ebook info and links I’ve switched to the trays and specifically the watering bottle tops you use and things have already improved. I’ve just received a bag of the seed compost you use, haven’t even opened it yet but oh my goodness even through the bag I can feel the difference in what I’m using is astounding. Hopefully the compost switch and watering bottle will curb my generous watering habit.

I think people are using way too much water Karen and because of that they then have to use too much heat and add vermiculite and perlite etc. Loads of water is fine in mid summer, but for the rest of the year, little and often seems much more prudent : All the best - Steve

Thanks Steve. Very thorough and useful. I really like the succession ideas. ‘The onions followed by spinach followed by field beans’ Etc. This is very useful info as I know you’ve used it and it worked well for you. It gets my wheels turning about maximizing space and timing. I think these kinds of succession ideas would make for a great video... maybe top 5 succession crop ideas? Thanks once again for your fabulously done information parcels.

Excellent informative vlog Steve. I have sowed onion seed for the first time this year, they looked a bit leggy to me so I have them a trim and they look much better now, they’re going into the cold frame at the weekend. I have also planted some sets in trays just in case, I wasn’t brave enough to trust myself with just the seed. Will be interesting to see any difference. Take care and batten down the hatches.

Hi Mark, I closed everything up yesterday, should be fine. I sowed in January this year, because the experts kept saying that was the thing to do, the result leggy onions. Trimming seems to be the solution but we will see. I do grow some from sets, similar reason to you, I can't for my onion harvest to fail, so I diversify : All the best - Steve

Hi Steve, thank you for your video! I have a question, I grew shallots for the first time last year from shallots bought at a garden center and they were amazing so I saved some to replant in autumn. But I just managed to get my hands on some Zebrune Shallot seeds, can these only be grown from seeds or will I be able to save some to grow the whole shallot later on? Very optimistic from me, since I haven't even sowed the seeds yet, haha! Any information will be great, thanks again!
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 3 жыл бұрын
Zebrune are an onion rather than a shallot, but they look and taste like a shallot. However you sow in late winter/early spring and harvest in autumn, they will go to seed next year : All the best - Steve

Great advice. How long would you recommend leaving onion sets in tray cells before planting out, have ordered too early. Thanks
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 2 жыл бұрын
3-4 weeks, in my case I only use cell trays so that I can start the sets in April and plant them in May and I only do that because the beds are full of spring crops until then. Based on the size and quality of the onions grown that way, I can't see any advantage of doing it earlier or longer. If I can I plant sets direct in the ground though, but again, not too early : All the best - Steve

@@SteveRichards morning Steve, thanks for the prompt reply. Storage is probably the best option for the onion sets. Would a cold, dark basement be best or in a cupboard in the house. Best of luck

Hi Steve, I am wondering whether you have experienced this, I am finding the seedlings of several varieties have pushed themselves out of the soil, seeing roots lying on the surface. I was thinking perhaps the seed was not planted deep enough, but it has occured across all varieties i am sowing this year, Globo, Amposta, Bedfordshire, and bunching onions. I have replanted them from seed trays into modules nice and deep hoping this will save them.

I've never had this, I plant mine 10mm deep, sometimes if I plant salad onions and all 9 germinate the compost will lift a little, I just use a jet my bottle top watering bottle to settle the compost down. Perhaps the compost you are using is too course? : All the best - Steve
@ianwynne5483
@ianwynne5483 3 жыл бұрын
@@SteveRichards thanks for the reply, the compost is always sieved, but i do work off the general principle of planting a seed at a depth twice its size , so I'll try at your 10mm recommendation. Thanks, Ian.
