For more information check out the other videos on our channel.
Orchids have gone from being expensive, specialist plants to being one of the most popular houseplants in the country. This is thanks to improvement s in propagation techniques that have increased the range available, the colours and, most of all, the price. One of the most commonly available orchids is the moth orchid or phalaenopsis. This is a warm growing orchid which needs a temperature between 16 and 30 degrees celsius, but ideally should stay around 21. They are sold in translucent pots because the roots need light. Your plant should last in a 12cm pot like this for at least its first year. You can see one of the main roots through the pot. They need good light but not direct sun which could scorch them. These orchids also have aerial roots which can absorb moisture and nutrients from the air. Its important not to damage these or they can rot. You only need to water once or twice a week because these plants don't like being to wet...

Thanks. I am a beginner. This was very helpful. For one, I didn't realize that they were supposed to be taken out of the decorative pot they were sold in and just let them live in the clear pot. I shall do that right now.

I wonder if anyone can help me? My orchid finished flowering a few months ago. It has 4 stems, all of which have stayed really healthy, I didn't cut them back at all after flowering. My plant has grown a new leaf almost to the full size of the other leaves and seems to be doing really well. Should I cut the stems back now? I probably should have done it months ago but don't want to damage any growth that might already be taking place. I really want my plant to reflower so am anxious to cut it at the wrong time.... hope that makes sense. Thanks.

I have a orchid that lost its blooms this past summer. I left it in its original spot. Weeks later I noticed what looked like new buds popping up. It turned out to be new leaves sprouting on the flower spikes. There are no roots growing yet. How do I turn these new sprouts into new plants?

We were given an orchid as a gift three years ago. we put it on the bathroom window sill and it did ok , grew, blossomed and shed as normal. This year, the thing grew petals double the size and is lasting forever. Any reason why this should suddenly happen? Thanks.

I can't find any recent videos on caring for Orchids.I was told to cut the plant back to 2 leaves as this promotes the bulbs and flowers to go.What a load of crap.Isn't that the feeding source of the Orchid.Someone has to do a recent video on Orchids and really explain about this. Also, can't find a video on what unhealthy roots look like compared to healthy ones.If I knew how to upload videos from my tablet to my PC I would teach people a lot about Orchids. Thanks for these few tidbits.

I repot mine in a combination of coconut husk and sphagnum Moss but if I don't have the coconut husk I use orchid bark. I water with rain water and Mist aerial roots that stick out at the top once in the morning with Rainwater. Mine are in a bright South window with sunlight but not intense sunlight, the leaves might burn but I've seen them turn purple sometimes when they get more light. Don't follow a watering schedule like once a week, always water when they're 3/4 dry. Don't let them stand in water , I've seen where they water them and let the water drain out and then put it back in a pot and that works well - no standing water. Whatever temperature you like they like, 70 - 80 degrees but I heard if you drop them like 20 degrees at night it helps them to set on a spike so as to bloom. Be careful with the new Spike, lightly wire it to a dowel rod and be careful the spikes snap off easy.
