Keep in mind folks. We don't just grow our own food because it's cheaper. We grow it ourselves because it's not toxic to our bodies. And if you've never grown your own, it will amaze you at the taste difference.

Amen! I am trying my hand at growing out of containers as I am wheelchair-bound ...God is good and has blessed me with the will to try to do things I once thought I couldn't do since I became wheelchair-bound and this year it is gardening...so far every single thing I have tried to find a new way of doing in a wheelchair I have been successful! I am so grateful I found this video and your channel! Many blessings!

You may want to look into straw bale gardening. I only say this because I am an Occupational Therapist and I use this method for my wheelchair bound clients. It allows you to garden from the wheelchair as the bales sit at the correct height so you don’t have to bend over. The problem of poor soils is also corrected by straw bales as you are basically growing on a compost pile. I have had several places where I could not dig and had no soil and this worked well for me. All that Hollis and Nancy teach here would easily transfer over to straw bale gardening. Praying for you!

Hey sweetie, I have to use a rollator, but when my dad passed I got his scooter. It helps me get outside and garden with using containers fixed for my height. And inside my kitchen I use a computer chair with wheels to roll around from sink to stove and my insta pot,slow cooker, and anything else that I use is on the counter so I can reach them. Is your kitchen big enough to use a computer chair?

For the first time, my 13-year-old high-functioning autistic son is excited about gardening. I had him go out with me and plant our red potato in the 5-gallon grow bags in early January. He wasn't too happy about it. He only checked them with me a few times through their growing season. Well, the day before yesterday I had him come out with me to pull weeds in the grow beds and take a look at the bags. While I was finishing weeding the rest of one of the beds, he shouted to me look, Mom, look and I said what's going on. He said there's a little red potato just sitting on top of the dirt. So I walked over to see, he was so excited and asked if it was ok to pick it. I said sure go ahead you're not going to hurt that thing. He was so gentle with it like he was holding a small chick or kitten. Then he said Mom we gotta get these out of the bags, I told him we'd get them on the weekend because there was a storm blowing in. Well, I have to say from all the months of eye-rolling, sighing, and pouting it took one little red potato to change how he felt about our little garden. He's actually looking forward to helping me this season, AMAZING!

The old timers where I grew up cut the potatoes into 4 to 6 pieces and they grew as many potatoes as most people grow using whole 🥔 🥔 🥔

I have been growing pineapple for a few years now. Last year it was bananas, this year I started blueberries and have some fruit now. But the potatoes I have always wanted to grow. Soil here in Florida is sandy so I am trying them in buckets. Maybe raised beds next season with onions for a border.

One could put a gutter under the buckets and collect excess water for use on other plants. Would be nutrient water due to all the soil richness.

Wow, lots,of teaching here needed. You get almost twice the yield in buckets as you do in the ground. It’s also easier at the end to empty buckets, than pitchfork spuds in the ground. Potatoes will grow in anything such as sand and sawdust, clay,and sand etc, great food source. My moms family were potato,farmers, we planted on the farm with them. Used each eye on the potato, never used whole potatoes to plant, always cut around and through each eye part and planted each eye.

We've been growing potatoes for 45 years,all we do is cut the eyes off the potatoes, and plant each eye up in the rows about 12" apart,, never had a problem YOU DON'T HAVE TO PLANT THE WHOLE POTATO IF YOU DON'T WANT TOO!! EACH EYE WILL GROW A PLANT!!cut the eyes off with some of the potato on them( not just the little eye) that way you don't use as many potatoes. AS I SAID PLANT WITH EYE UP!!

Lowes now carries food grade buckets in all common sizes. I noticed they started having them in stock about a year ago.

I looked at those also. The Firehouse buckets are a 90 while Lowes are a 70 in thickness. I compared the two with information shown on the bottom of the bucket. The thickness of the plastic is only the difference. Have a great crop

For phosphorus, you can keep your eggshells, bake/barbeque them 'till they're mid-brown, crush them up and set them in vinegar. Once all bubbling action has finished, strain the liquid and store it. Use a tablespoon of it per gallon of water, and there's your (almost) free phosphorous.

Not sure what you mean by "quick release" but it would be water soluble, ready for the plant to take it up as soon as it can access it.

You can also cut-up the seed potatoes for more yield. For example, if a single seed potato has 3 sprouts..cut the potato into 3 sections each with a sprout and plant them. It's actually better to do it that way since the cut stimulates the potato to start growing more aggressively and heal itself.

Ya that's what we use to do as a kid it makes 200 pounds go a lot farther and you reap a lot more and that's what's important thing is is reaping what you sow but on the other hand you got to be careful of the deer seems like they like the red potato tops more than they do the kennebecs or the yellow potatoes I don't know seems like every time there's red potatoes reading down to the ground not so much on the other Potato tops like the kennebecs or the Yukons potatoes but I'm not complaining little deer meat makes potatoes taste a lot better I don't care where you live at

Here in Ohio we’ve started our veggie seeds in my attached garage using grow lights. I’m calling this Round One! I remember my Grandparents proudly telling stories about the “Victory Gardens” they planted during WW 2. I’m almost 69 & I find myself going back to their glorious stories and using much of what they taught me. My Father always brought me Veggie Seeds & small Veggie Plants for my garden while he was alive. He’d throw in a few Flowers but always reminded me to plant Veggies first as we couldn’t eat flowers! I’m praying our garden grows better this year than ever before. In the past it was more of a Hobby than anything else. This year I’m thinking it’s going to be a necessity. I have a house in the outskirts of town on one acre. I took my old 1974 Sears garden tractor and a plow and tiller and made a 50 x 20 ft vegetable garden a few years ago. I planted onions and garlic around the first two feet of the garden to keep pests out. I thought . I planted a couple of different varieties of Potatoes along with some lettuce , bell peppers, tomatoes and various other things . All was planted in the ground. After months of taking care of my garden it finally got mature enough to enjoy some of the fruits of my labor , NOT. More than 80 % of the potatoes had been eaten by Gophers !!! They even ate the Onions and the Garlic !!!!! After that I gave up. I have poisoned ,trapped and drown these pests but they are so rooted in that I cannot kill them fast enough to get rid of them. Thanks for the video , after watching it I may find some food grade 55 gal drums and cut them in half and use those instead of the 5 gal buckets. At least it should get rid of the gopher problem , don't know about the neighbors though , Lol. Great video , thanks for taking the time to make it.

Ok try this tack a small cat out in the garden with you her little dish out there feeding a little bit do that for a couple weeks and this will teach him to go to the Garden to get something to eat aha gophers now some will not eat them but a few cats will eat just half of it ? I not Quite sure why

Just a suggestion. Put your ruler inside the bucket to make your marks. It will be much easier to tell when you havereached the mark.

Great teaching video! I always had a big garden as did my parents. When my son went to college he made the comment about he missed having fresh produce out of our garden. The next year when he started college I made several bucket containers of veggies so he could have a small garden on his deck on the second floor where he lived. Potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, and spinach. I took 4 buckets planting pole beans in each. I cut willow poles for the beans to climb tied them in the old traditional tee pee and he had a garden!

I’m getting a little old and have COPD and I’m on oxygen off and on hard me walk around so I’m glad to learn this way!!! I grew up in the garden hilling up potatoes!!! I’m so glad you two are christians and I went to Sunday school and church and my family sang in church and at other churches!!! All I can say is thank you both for the information because I’m doing a lot in pots now because of its hard for me and my wife to get around!!! As my father used to say when the garden was all planted! Praise the Lord!!!

Put some screen material in the bottom of the bucket before you add the dirt. That way as the water is draining out it doesn't steal the soil as well.

Big box store food safe 5 gal buckets have a lip . Plant top bucket with drain holes. Set it inside second bucket WALLA water catch container. May seem like a waste of growing bucket however if ur limited for space and outdoor water outlet it might beat hauling alot of water. Definately gonna try this. Just a tip....plant them on a FALLING MOON. If you plant potatoes on a rising moon (growing toward a full moon), you will have HUGE bushes, but hardly any potatoes. Falling moon (shrinking after the full moon), small bush but lots of potatoes. I thought this was B.S. when an old man told me this decades ago, I planted anyway and he was right. I always have huge yields of potatoes now. The plant itself won't get huge but lots of potatoes.

@Carol Howard From that time on I've always waited until I could plant on a falling moon. I guess he made a believer out of me when my 4, 50ft rows had bush chest high and huge around them, I only got enough potatoes out of those 4 rows to fill not even half of a 5 gallon bucket. I have planted a week or so early just to make sure they went in the ground while the moon was falling.

@@maccart67 WANING MOON..becoming smaller after a full moon. For potatoes, usually I find waning crescent for planting produces the best yields. But, it is different depending on the vegetable. Waning crescent for root vegetables.

3:27 I love that you stress food safe plastic, I can't tell you how many people I see growing in the orange HD buckets. 5:55 The flow of water through the soil also serves to oxygenate the soil. As the water goes through it fills the little gaps, then empties them and they fill up with fresh air. If the buckets don't drain this process is hindered and the soil can't breath, which contributes to the root rot (anaerobic bacteria) you're talking about.

I have always cut my seed potatoes. I make sure they have a couple of eyes on each piece. I never put a whole potato,unless they are small. My dad made us work in a garden when we were kids. I have also raised potatoes from the peelings,but they weren't as big. Appreciate the upload. God bless and stay safe and keep the faith.🙏✌️

Dampen you soil before you put it in the bucket. Moist soil accepts water readily and it won't just run over to the side of the bucket, down and out. As a nursery manager, I always insisted the workers dampen the soil, not wet, just moist. It is easily done in your wheelbarrow before you use it. Personally, I would add some perlite and I would mix the bone meal into the soil. I would also mix in some magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt). If people choose to use potting soil, though, check the ingredients as most potting soil has magnesium sulfate added already. I like the idea of putting the buckets up off the ground.

Followed your 5 gal bucket potato growing series and grew a large amount of potatoes. I actually used large plastic pots and grew about 5lbs per pot. Thank you so very much for sharing your amazing knowledge. I will be growing more potatoes in pots next year. Alberta, Canada.

Years ago a landlord "allowed" me to have a backyard garden. Every morning when I went out to work on it I prayed and at the end of every day i would pray beneath the stars and the moon. One of my friends came to visit and was astonished that such a small plot had so much in it. I told her about my prayers and she said that would do it. I ate well all summer and fall and harvested a bumper of everything. When my grandchildren would come for a visit and asked for a snack I would show them the garden. They had quite a variety to eat.

The kiss of the Sun for pardon The song of the birds for mirth One is nearer God's heart in a garden Than anywhere else on Earth. I remember the day he brought it home as he put it up on the wall by the door so he could always see it whenever he went out or Came in . It's how I was raised.

Started gardening as a retirement hobby this year. I have limited space available so followed your video and grew my first potatoes in two - 7 gallon grow bags. With our recent high temperatures, I went ahead and harvested them at about 90 days and could not be more pleased. They averaged almost 8 lbs. per bag. I will most definitely do more potatoes next year. Thanks for sharing your insights in your videos - keep them coming.

All good advise. One thing about potatoes, even if you don't do the very best thing, you are still pretty sure to get some sort of worthwhile crop, easy to grow rewarding crop. Great for beginners, as once they get growing, you see rapid growth, your seed potatoes multiply, so yo see the economic value. It's often said, if your space is limited, never aim to be self sufficient with potatoes, as there are crops of more value to be had, but, if you like new potatoes, readily available and you have a spare bucket...... Another good thing about growing potatoes, if you do want to grow them in the ground, and it is a new site not used before (I know that can create problems suck as Eel worms, but certain spuds stand up to those more than others, another subject) The initial digging a trench, you will find the stones and trash to throw out, then when you harvest, you will find other nasties to get rid of. Causes such disruption to the ground Potatoes are a good starting point to get gardening. Next year, crop rotation, plant more somewhere else, then where the Spuds were, plant a non root crop this time, maybe Broad Beans, Runner beans. Once you start growing Veg, you won't ever stop.

If you set something under the 🥔 bucket, you can catch the water that drains and use it again. That water will have a lot of nutrients in it.

Sharee Jacobs We went to a donut shop and they saved buckets for us - 3 different sizes and some with the lids for free and they are much heavier duty than the ones you get at the Home Depot or Lowe’s. We tried those and in the FL sun they just don’t hold up. Just an idea. We also store some hurricane items in them - flashlights, fans, Etc. keeps them clean and dry and organized. God bless.

I set up chicken wire fences down the rows and fill them with grassclippings, mulched leaves, dirt. At harvest time I pull the fences, grub out the potatoes and till it all into the row, then wet it down with a garden hose, then cover with black plastic. Never have to use manure. In the Spring I dig the trenches, put in potatoes where the beans were last year and the beans where the potatoes were. I often run corn in the bean rows so they have the stalks to climb.It all gets woodash from an entire winter of woodburning in the fireplace. Things I picked up from all over.

Obviously those asking why you don’t go buy a bag for $5 have never tasted the fruits of their labour. Nor have they tasted a home grown potatoe. I ea 3 lb bag of potatoes grows you easily 50 lbs. Then there is the fact that it’s a hobby..

Nice to hear that someone cares about the container they grow their edible food. I’ve asked some of the big guys they said they don’t grow enough so they don’t care at them buckets
