Grasshoppers/ locusts love my tobacco leaves here in Alberta.

I spray soapy water on the underside of the leaves in the evenings And wash them off early morning before the sun hits No more aphids

Brand new hornworms are hide & seek champions. It’s fortunate that they have a black thread tail or I’d never find them. I forage for the eggs. Yellow jackets in the tobacco patch are your best friend.

I could be wrong, but I think it's actually a certain breed of wasp that hunts the hornworms. And yes, they are sneaky little buggers, especially when small. I place a nickle bounty on them and send my kids hunting.

I am in rural South Africa and with our lockdown due to covid, I have decided to grow my own tobacco, largely because of your inspirational videos. I would love to ask more advice from you.

@@thetobaccoguy1751 I have never grown tobacco before but I have grown tomatoes and other similar plants particularly in my area where i live now. Our summers are really hot but not too humid. We get summer rainfall in the form of thunderstorms. Our winters are really cold with frost and occasional snow. My question is, what are the climatic conditions suited for growing tobacco, and which ones should one avoid? I have more questions to follow.

@@GodfriedFritz Tobacco likes moderate heat. It originated in south America where 90+F is common. If temps get over 100F it can be a problem, for certain varieties. They cannot handle the cold at all. If it dips to frost temps, 34-38F, it will kill them outright. They can withstand the 40's, but they won't grow. Optimal growth temp is 75-85F. You want at least 100 fairly warm days for full sized plants.

Yes. Be sure to test on a small area, and leave it for a day or two. Some soaps and some strengths will burn the leaves.

Not typically. I use my own compost, but not a ton of it. A well rounded fertilizer is very useful, like 10-10-10. I don't use it a I grown all organic.

Yes. The nicotine is only in the leaves, so unless you rub your veggies down with the leaves, it will be just fine. I honestly think it can be beneficial to grow around other crops, as most bugs and all animals don't like it at all.
