I liked your comparison on what happens when you don't transplant into a larger pot. The first year I tried to grow tobacco, I had only a couple plants, and they became what I called "bonzai tobaccos," and I actually thought that's all the bigger the plants were supposed to become, because I had never seen tobacco growing before. It wasn't until the next year that I had the full grown plants.... and I was astounded at how big tobacco can get. So your comparison makes an excellent point.

Oh yeah! Its going to love the heat, humidity and sun! You will have optimal growing conditions there. In fact if you are in south Florida you can plant at any time of the year since there is no real winters there! Just be sure to keep the soil moist at all times, and lots of sun!

@MyWillyboi Awesome! I have that outdoor terrarium and the moss thrive naturally without me doing anything at all, but of course I am in seattle and it grows naturally here. I have tried some natural terrariums indoors and it doesn't do as well. The basics is to keep it moist...but a herp cage needs high temps right? that might be drying it out. We'll see if i can do a terrarium vid coming up! the home cured gave me a headache...I'll make a vid on this too!

Yes it is possible to grow in New York, if you are in the city you should make sure you have a spot that gets full sun during the day and has enough room for the plant to spread out. Best time to sow the seeds is in March-April it will give your plants 1 month of indoor growing while its still cold out, then you can move outside after the last frost! I have zero experience with snuff/dip, but processing and is the same for all tobacco, you may just need to add something at the end for flavor?

@CrapGames2 I think you mean the little jiffy peat pods? The 1" seed starters? You will need to transplant these into 3.5" square nursery pots prior to planting into the ground. Transplant them into pots when they are about 2-3" tall, then transplant into the ground when they are about 6-9" tall. You can watch the earlier videos in this series to see about the size for transplanting!
@SurfMonkeyCoconut
@SurfMonkeyCoconut 13 жыл бұрын
@rafire34 I recommend using a small pot first, because the seedling when removed from the starter tray is really fragile, even in nice warm weather, the wind can easily break the plant's stalk. Tobacco should be kept indoors for about 3 months using a small pot will allow the seedling to keep growing and get stronger.

Your spot on advice, those plants in ground will go 2 x that size, only take seed from 2 or 3 best plants, that ensures large healthy gerational seed, weed plants same deal, they need many feet of of tap root soil to mature to what they can offer, I grew a breed in Canada, around lake erie, the whole field 8 feet before topping. Each plants produce large 30 " lower leaf, 25" upper. They need lots of nitrogen to reach those levels, my fav is virgina gold leaf 77, smooth high nic, sweet, nature's finest smoke if you ask me

Yes!!! Tobaccos are awesome plants, grows from the most infinitesimal of seed size and grows a million times in just a few months. Also the sticky leaves in a greenhouse would be a good pest control measure. I love the passion it inspires because of its robust growth and anticipation of its final product.

@giftsfromtheholyland Awesome! 15 acres is a fantastic amount of land! You will find you probably only need a 5' x 10' spot for a good crop of about 15 plants! For winter growing, you will do well in a greenhouse, its what I recommend for the only winter alternative. I don't believe they will do well under sun lamps. These amazing plants have a nearly microscopic seed, but grows into a 7' monster in just 6-8 months, (its entire lifespan), its an annual so will die back after this time.

@TheBearfolk Soil should be moist at all times throughout the life of the plant! If the soil ever gets dry the plant will wilt within a few hours. You can switch to everyday watering when the plants are large enough to start sucking the soil dry, typically after a month or if you live in a really dry climate.

@SurfMonkeyCoconut It's not the circular peat pod but a peat pot. Can I just transplant the whole peat pot into the bigger 3.5" deep pot or do I need to remove the soil etc. like you did in the videos? Just wondering if the roots would break through the peat pot. I think they are supposed to bio-degrade but I'm not sure if it would do it fast enough. Thanks for responding!

@MrJuggaloicp around 15-20 leaves can be harvested, accounting for the ones lost to wind damage and such. if you grow very early in the season and have a mature plant mid-summer, you may be able to harvest the plant twice! There are smaller leaves beneath the main leaves which are called "milk leaves" these can develop and grow larger given more-than-ideal conditions!

@reelthing4u Tobacco is a very hearty plant once established. Temps can be from 60-100 humidity can be anything so long as the soil remains moist at all times. In terms of light, it will need full sun for at least 4 hours a day, (which is pushing the low end), any less and it may contribute to stunting and/or anemic looking white leaves.

How warm is it where you live in the summer? I want to grow tobacco next summer here in Massachusetts but I'm worried it may be too cold. :\ Also could I grow smaller plants indoors in the winter? I heard that tobacco requires 80 degrees (Fahrenheit) to grow. Is that true?
@SurfMonkeyCoconut
@SurfMonkeyCoconut 11 жыл бұрын
Of all the growing indoors scenarios, growing in a greenhouse is probably the best bet. Although even better is simply waiting to grow outdoors during summer. If you have full sun where you are during winter, I say give it a shot. Treat everything the same, keep temperatures in the 50's-70's. To strengthen the stalks you mayw ant to create some artificial wind with a fan or something.

@GardenerTobak Yes totally makes a huge difference. It was also light deprived. It almost felt like a hibernation of sorts. I suspect if it wasn't winter and (for example), I got a really early start on the season, if I transplanted the stunted plant to a larger pot with lots of sun, it would have taken off like a sprout! but of course it is all speculation! :D Maybe a good experiment for next season.

Sounds awesome, Buddy. I was just wondering. I'm in Sunny, HOT South Florida. If you were able to get tobacco that big in Seattle, how long do you think it could take to get that kind of size down here? I assume that tobacco likes the weather down here because of the history or plantations and stuff in the South.

The pink flower is woodland tobacco and enjoys the shade partial shade actually, the yellow flower enjoys full sun. I say pink flower which has the long pointy leaves, the yellow flower has shorter rounded smaller leaves. I was told the pink flower comes from the Bodewadomi or Potawatomi and the yellow comes from the Ojibwa. I mean before the contemporary cultivators these plants were grown by my ancestors.

Tobacco really needs the benefit of being outdoors, it needs full sun, healthier in general if there is slight breeze and a cyclic resting cycle (nights); all this in addition to fertilizer, lots of water and good soil. You can get a really good head start by sowing and growing indoors for 4 months prior to last frost. Generally you want to start 3 months ahead, but you can push it longer so your plant is more mature when you plant outside.

@Wolfspirittt Oh yeah, I know what you are talking about, I would remove it from the biodegradable pot. Only because this plant grows so rapidly, that I don't think the pot will biodegrade fast enough to accommodate the growth. It might, but better to be safer than sorry. If you want you could still throw the pot on to your top soil as mulch or into your compost heap if you have one!

@guns478 Typically these are pest resistant because of the sticky surface and not very appetizing leaf. Personally i've never encountered any infestations, but if you are planning to smoke the leaf, do not use pesticide. You can try getting some lady bugs, but im not sure if they would like the sticky leaf surface. You could also try a one part rubbing alcohol to 3 parts water solution and spray them, that may work, but im not sure how well the leaf will do.

@giftsfromtheholyland Part 1: I think the greenhouse will work great for winter growing, for summer growing 15 acres is great, but if you plan to harvest seeds, each type of tobacco must be separated by at least 1 mile to maintain its varietal integrity. If you let them all grow on 1 parcel, you will most likely end up with mystery tobacco the next year. This is the biggest reason we only offer 3 types of seed, we need to grow on 3 different properties.

How much time does tobacco need to grow starting from sowing until harvesting?? please respond:)
@SurfMonkeyCoconut
@SurfMonkeyCoconut 12 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried that! We are only able to concentrate on 3 types because you need to separate each tobacco crop type by 1 mile to avoid possible cross-pollination and to maintain genetic integrity between varieties! One of these years I may try growing an exotic strain at home away from the seed crops!

@CanadianSwine All tobaccos are pretty much the same, just regionally distinct. There are no dwarf tobaccos that I know of. But again a dwarf tobacco would miss the point as the leaves are the product and typically the bigger the better! We recommend starting indoors on a window sill, but their nutritional requirements and size increase exponentially after 3 months. If you have a greenhouse, or a really sunny area in your house, it would be the most ideal indoor situation.

@LeperMessiah95 Eeep! You've stumped me, I've never attempted to make a processed tobacco for chew. My expertise lies with boutique cigars. I assume the curing/fermentation part is the same then you would process it further, shredding, adding flavor?? You will see from future vids, the tobacco leaf remains quite moist after curing, if you wanted to go 'all natural' its possible to chew the cured/fermented leaf as is! I've done this in the past just to taste and it has a nice spicy note.

Its best to start indoors, the seedlings are very fragile when they are less than 1 month old. Wind, rain or critters could easily kill them. It wouldn't be a problem to bring in the outdoor soil indoors into seedling starters or pots.

@mrsiepel1 Oh man! Tobacco horn worm is a problem, we don't have many (if any at all) up here so we haven't ran into this problem yet. I am not sure if there is food-safe caterpillar killer, but if you are planning to smoke the leaves later, this may not be a good idea. Hornets and birds are natural predators, I wonder if you put up a bird feeder to attract more birds to your yard, so long as you don't have other veggies they may want to eat. The last solution is long-term with...cont.

We are up in the Pacific Northwest so we are lucky to see mid-70 degree weather in summer. For just one or two weeks (like right now we just peek into the 90's). so I am living it up while I can! After this, its back to the 60 degree weather we normally have. So to answer your question. No, you do not need 80 degree weather, however your plants would love it, if you so happened to have it. The plants in these videos were grown in full sun in about 60-70 degrees.
