Watermelon needs lot of sun lot of water and lot of nutrients.
Soil
Give best soil as deep as possible. Loose soil will help roots to spread. Mix soil with compost or cow dung and also add neem cake.
Seeds
Collect seeds from healthy watermelon. Wash the seeds with water. Let the seeds dry at room temperature for about 1 week. Use large pots it will help watermelon to grow faster.
Sow seeds 1 Inch deep cover it with soil. Water it. Select a place where plant get full sun.
Watermelon plants germinates easily within few days we can also remove weak baby plants.
Watermelon plants need lot of moisture. Soil should never dry. Water is important from planting to fruit.
Watermelon vines can reach 20 feet in length.
Watermelon needs lots of nutrients to grow.
In early stage we can give nitrogen based fertilizer and after fruit sets we can give potassium based fertilizer.
Watermelon plant needs regular fertilization.
Use cow dung banana peel water. Liquid fertilizer for watermelon works well.
Flowers
Watermelon plant produce male and female flowers. First male flowers will appear after some days female flowers will appear. Female flowers are larger. Female flowers have small bulge at the stem.
This bulge will grow as watermelon after pollination. If the fruit dies it’s not pollinated.
First few female flowers will give good fruits.
Watermelon flowers are insect pollinated. Insects like bees butterflies ant help for pollination.
Ant Bees transfer pollens from male flower to female flowers. Pollen grains stick to its body.
If insects are not doing their job we can help by doing hand pollination.
We can do it using brush. Rub the brush in the male flower and then rub the brush in female flower.
Watermelon starts growing after 2 to 3 days. It will take about 30 to 40 days to harvest. Now give lots of potassium rich fertilizer. Give support to the growing fruit as it grows big the vine can’t hold its weight.
Use neem oil spray weekly once or neem leaf spray weekly once. Neem leaf spray really works good.
Leaves looks healthy and disease free.
Harvesting:
Harvesting time is important.
Look for curly tendril at the stem once it dry watermelon is ready.
Light color patch on bottom of fruit.
Check the sound
Knock the melon and listen the sound
A dull sound means the melon is ripen.
Watermelon do not ripen after it picked.
Watermelon should be allowed to ripen well.
