interesting take on the technique to sounding brutal...what honestly helped me discover The Voice as Ill call it is when a buddy of mine Told me a long time ago when I was trying to make a Band.. " Alex stop trying to sound like Dani Filth and put more Balls in Your voice .....Which at the time really pissed me off...But it was the perfect fuel to The fire...I would practice at it Daily with that idea seared in my head ...Kinda of like how you clearly pointed out.." I SEE I FEEL I AM!!!! Then Long Behold My voice became a fuckin force to be reckoned with....I can still project it to this day 20 years later

Great story, thanks for sharing! It's always interesting to hear how others found "it". I can relate to the Dani Filth stuff. I think most people think they know how they "should" sound. But atleast for me, i had no idea how my natural and relaxed growl would sound until i found it. Only been doing this for 5 years so far. But 2 albums and a bunch of live shows later, i still sound like i did when i started.

Good stuff! For me I always felt it in my cheeks or jaw when I do low growl stuff, it’s harder for me to sound raspy and higher pitch screams. Some can produce higher stuff, but anytime I’ve tried it feels forced. it’s like singing, have a voice, but don’t try to sound like others, we all have our own, even when it comes down to scream or growl whatever you will call it. This was helpful I’ve been doing harsh vocals since I was 16 and now I’m 23 I watch vocal tutorials from time to time to brush up and find new things to better hone in on my technique….. Anyway I just thought I’d add that with David Vincent style of vocals you can always hear his voice in his growl so to get closer to his tone I find that putting my voice in and a little less growl it sounds more similar I guess you can also say that is the same technique that Barney Greenway from Napalm Death and John Tardy from obituary use…

You forgot one very important thing and that's to bring it from your diaphragm not from your throat. If you try to do it with your throat, you're gonna get a sore throat and blow your voice out you have to bring it from Downlow in your diaphragm
@Slowfingered

Correct. But i explain it in a different way. By learning to shout "Hey" as i do in th video, you automatically engage the right muscles. Using the 'diaphragm' and other terms never helped me understand what it means or how it should feel. But you're 100% right about not pushing it with your throat. Cheers

you don't need volume to do good growls, in fact it's better to put more emphasis on your technique and style you're looking for over volume. you will notice you're doing things right when your growls are at about the same volume as your normal talking voice or lower. the reason it's better to do that is because you don't want to put excess energy and lung air capacity into sounding loud and straining your vocal cords, microphones can do that for you.

Thanks for the feedback! It's a bit hard to know without hearing/seeing what your doing. But a thing to keep in mind is that it's not about the volume and doing it "loud". Try to do a deep laugh (if that makes sense) without it being loud. The louder you are, the more tension your putting on your throat. Atleast from my experience. Might do a part2 video on this. Hope it made sense. Cheers mate

My experience is that if you feel pain - you're doing it wrong. Feeling a bit thick or dry in your throat is normal afterwards in the beginning. But hard to say without hearing you. My best guess is that you're probably pushing your voice too hard and aren't relaxed.

Thank you for sharing :) My question is: do you consider it safe to try to learn growling on your own, with YT tutorials for example, on a regular basis? I'd love to learn growling but I'm too anxious to find myself a coach. Yet I'm concerned that incorrect techniques, if not pointed out by someone and fixed, could make some damage to my vocal chords. What do you think?
@Slowfingered
@Slowfingered 4 ай бұрын
Think of it as going to the gym. Do you need a personal trainer to learn how to work out? No. You can figure it out on your own. Just pay attention to your body. Try stuff out. If you feel pain while doing it, then you're 100% doing it wrong. If not, then keep doing it until you see results. If you don't see results, try something new. Thats my approach to pretty much everything. Unlike working out, it is very hard for someone to hear if you have bad technique. It's all about how you feel when you do it. But with that said. It sure doesn't hurt having someone giving you tips & tricks to get stuff going in the right direction. As i did in this video. Hope my answer somewhat helped. Good luck, keep at it!

For it to sound guttural (atleast for me), the power needs to come from the belly along with open throat and jaw. That is what i'm trying to explain with the "hey" and pronounciation part. Tongue placement/shape might also make a difference. Hope it helps
@pejter717
@pejter717 10 ай бұрын
You achieve the normal false cord growl by having mouth wide open and tongue in a normal position. You can do a low growl by emphasizing low sounds such as O or A. The E is usually used for higher sounds. The guttural sound (or the overall gurgliness) comes if you open your mouth into a tight O-shape and put the tip of your tongue either at the back of the front upper teeth or front lowe teeth. This pushes your tongue down as well as create an air pocket inside your mouth. Then if you do a false cord it should sound more constricted and gurgly. Note - this works for me, but everybody is built different.

After I have practised I can feel a small pain in my throat. On a 1-10 scale it's a 2. It always dissapears. Is that normal in the beggining or am I doing something wrong?
@Slowfingered
@Slowfingered 4 ай бұрын
This is a tricky one to answer. But the most important thing is that you don't feel pain while doing it. Pain is a clear indication of wrong technique. But what you describe sounds more like being sore after a long workout, which is normal in the beginning. As it takes time for your muscles in the throat to adapt. But it can also be that you are pushing your voice alittle too much. Or trying to do too much in too short time. I mostly felt this in the beginning. Then i learned to not push as hard, and be more relaxed. But i still feel sore every now and then after a long recording session, or live show. Just listen to your body, and see if it gets better. If not - try something different. Hope this made sense, cheers

Having no idea of how you're doing what you're doing makes it more TRVE KVLT, so it's totally fine. :) One tip: lifting up your shoulders when taking a breath is proper fuck-up. It indicates a rather poor technique. You have to breathe with the belly. The power for singing comes from the balls, quite literally - it's the pelvic floor muscles and the belly muscles that do most of the work. The upper chest, shoulders and, most importantly, the neck must be COMPLETELY relaxed if you really want to project the sound and not damage you voice. It might be less important when growling but still. I'm not even gonna ask what genre of music your band plays - as you're from Sweden, it's automatically melodic blackened death metal. :) God Jul och gott Nytt År.
@Slowfingered
@Slowfingered Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and for the tip! You're probably 100% right. Might seem like I'm only using my chest. But i take full breaths (inhale from belly first, then expand chest). Think i got that from years of doing breathing excersises every day. Might be overkill and enough with the belly breathing only. Will try it out! God jul my friend!

@@Slowfingered If it doesn't hurt, then you're probably doing it right. :) I'm no vocal coach either, it's just what I was taught by actual vocal coaches and classical singers. I had thought that my voice was weak and I would never be able to sing, but they made me realize that I was very wrong. The proper breathing technique made all the difference. It doesn't really help with hitting the right notes though, so I still suck.🤣
