I hand shuffle to distract my opponent while i bottom draw

The first time I saw this, I was thinking, oh my god would you just sit the hell still?

I think the earliest explanation is some people just fidget.

Hand shuffling and sliding the graveyard out on a cloth playmat is a really satisfying fidget for me.

I just did this as a fidget, I didn’t know there was a term for it, much less a strategic reason..

Hand shuffle is most annoying thing to do in a duel. If my opponent starts hand shuffling like an addict out of meds, i will start snorting.

I do it mostly cause it helps me deal with my anxiety problems, keeps my mind in the game in case i already finished analyzing the current game state but my opponent is still in the middle of something, like shuffling.

It's annoying and you will look nervous and hyperactive. Almost as bad as deck profiles, where they constantly put a card via thumb snap on the table or rubbing the thumb or its nail up or down the deck for this shuffling sound. Or piling the first few cards in a deck profile up, just to swipe them all over the table again and repeating this whole procedure 5 times, while explaining an effect or the card choices, lol. Slapping on a card or aggressively putting the nail from the index finger on a card during explanations of effects/combos, where it can already leave a little dent on the sleeve or even the card.

Hand shuffling is mostly a flex by sweats or wannabe-sweats

Most peoples first time seeing it is almost intimidating. It can make a player look "skilled". But once you get into competitive, its more just a habit nobody can fucking break. I gotta watch a 15 min combo 17 times a day at a regionals, so I gotta do something with my hands while I wait.

I hand suffle because I have nothing better to do for 15 mins waiting in my opponent's turn.

It's actually easy to use this to read your opponent's behavior patterns. Be sure you alternate your patterns so you don't become predictable. Or, know how to keep a strong poker face.

I know sometimes players, myself included, hand shuffle because we lack object permanence. If I don't see the card completely in my hand, it just doesn't exist. So many times I've misplayed just because I forgot that the bottom card of my hand was actually the card I should have played first. Hand shuffling forces me to take a second, rearrange my hand, and look at the cards completely before taking an action.

I hand shuffle coz im pretty sure i have ADHD.... so its just impulsive to do something with my hands when thinking or waiting for opponent

This is why magic the gathering had the famous UNset card, "Stop that". Forcing folks to keep their hands in a relatively organized manner as opposed to annoyingly "flicking" their cards around.

This seems more like rifling through than shuffling

People spend 1/3 of their turns doing this and wonder why they end up going to time.

It definitely does not look cool. It makes me think my opponent is on the spectrum and cannot sit still and think. However; I did not think about the adding to hand and setting a card perspective. That is actually very, very intuitive. I generally try to shuffle my cards once when I added cards so I can set cards without my opponent knowing what I sent but it happens fast enough and I organize my hand anyways so throughout the duel, my hand is constantly moving around even if I’m not hand shuffling. BUT, I actually like the mindset of hidding your play. I just hate when my opponent hand shuffles constantly instead of doing it once every time they add. The shuffle the entire time they’re watching you play or while they’re thinking. It pisses me off. I wish they’d stop.

I hand shuffle to keep my head in the game, constantly doing something while its not my turn helps me concentrate on my opponents actions and what to do next. Though sometimes, mostly to psyche my opponent, i lay down my cards on the table and watch what they are doing, it tells them that i have no responses in my hand so they typically over extend, and i get them with a response.

the hand shuffling method you describe makes it mildly ambiguous, but it isn't truly shuffling your hand-- you're just reversing the order. Like if my opponent adds a monster to last card in their hand, shuffles their hand, and then sets their first card, I know it's the same monster they added.

Maybe I'm speaking for myself, but it really makes me want to come across the table at my opponent. 😅

I’m doing it really because I’m either waiting for my opponent to do something or thinking. Or I just wanna move. Instead of bouncing my leg, shuffling my hand. Same kinda thing. People who get annoyed by it are babies.

I'm sorry hand shuffling I think started because ppl got adhd and need to do something with their hands to me it's stupid and you could easily drop a card if you don't do it s lot and now your opponent saw your card I think it's stupid my opinion

Huh, I don't think it makes you look cool, most people do it because they are anxious or nervous, not because your so called. "cool" I used to tap my foot and move my foot when I did it.

It helps me think TBH. ADD is a hell of a drug.

It can be helpful to make your opponent lose the identity of a card… if you shuffle it they won’t know what will be set if they know something is in your hand.

This is SO annoying! I consider every person doing this having ... issues. And it is NOT I repeat NO NAY NEVER 'cool'. Stop doing this! (If you feel bored waiting for your opponent - play a different game)
