Treestand 2018. Follow John Royer as he replaces a double ladder treestand on his property in clarion county Pennsylvania. John shows a unique tool to use to help setup a heavy treestand safely with one person. This will be the treestand John and Danielle will use for the early muzzleloader and archery season and during the pennsyvlania gun deer season.

Thanks John!! this video was very helpful. I don't like to have to depend on others for help if it is something I can do myself on my own time. I have used a four wheeler and a rope and pully before but this makes much more sense. I have some ladder stands that I want to relocate so this lift system will be a good investment. Thanks Again!

As a fellow bow hunter I feel like I use more ratchet straps in a season than I shoot arrows at deer. I only say that because I herd you say in the video that you will put more ratchet straps just to make sure the stand is sturdy and I do that too. Great vid good luck

It's great that you can do this John but you should really should have someone with you. I take my wife and its good I do, one time I thought I had it secure and the damn thing shifted on me even with all the lower strapping and bar in place. And it does get dicey when you have to head up to secure the stand basket. Thanks for sharing best of luck this season!

we pound some rebar stakes into the ground and tie off the bottom step . Cant tell you how important it is to keep the legs from jumping up on you as you lift it. Also we try and get a pulley up in the tree to the height of where the seat will end up using either a ladder or climbing stand. Then use winch on our ATV to pull it up in place.

Got one of these and they work great, both putting the stand up and taking it down. One thing I ran into and it didn't seem to happen with this stand... the ladders often bowed for me if I didn't have someone to stand under and push up on the ladder. Meaning the winch lifted the platform and just bowed the ladder instead of the whole thing going up "flat". I'm wondering if I move the attachment point for the winch strap a little lower would allow the stand platform weight to counteract that tendency to bow? Even so, it's a fantastic tool...this video led me to getting one and I used it a TON this past summer and fall to set even small single man stands because it's just easier. Plus you can winch it in tight once it's in position to help stabilize it to climb up for the first time to strap it fast. Thanks a bunch!

With all the attention to safety these days I've had to reflect on the use of tree stands over my now 50 year hunting experiences. For many reasons I love tree stands, but I also like other methods of hunting. I don't bow hunt any more and stick to rifle hunting in fairly thick and mountainous areas of Virginia. I've evolved in recent years to still hunting and using natural ground stands and hides like blending in with brush piles. This is a lot easier and actually gives me more flexibility as the day's hunt progresses, and it has really paid off in results or I would go back to tree stands. In my opinion too many guys are too invested in the idea that the ONLY way to hunt is out of a tree stand and they fail to consider what else might work, probably as a safer option as well.

I really like mine as I seem to always be alone when it comes time to move stands but the ground pegs are useless where I hunt. Tie the bottom of the ladder to another tree somewhere in front of the stand. Sometimes it takes a bit of rope but works fine if you take the time to do it correctly

Here's an important tip: attach your criss-cross straps and ratchet strap(s) to the platform BEFORE you raise the stand. Even better, tie a 30' safety line to one side of the stand, too. After the stand is against the tree, walk the safety line around the tree and hold it taut as you climb. This keeps the stand against the tree until you can attach the ratchet strap.

This works but it is inefficient and stresses the frame a lot. The issue is the angle at which you did it at. Per physics, when you apply a force at an angle, it is the resultant component of two component forces. In this case, the tension force in the rope is the result of a small upward force(perpendicular to ladder) relative to it's complinentary component force, a very large compression force compressing the ladder. What rotates the stand up is the force that is perpendicular to the ladder. So how do you make this easier? You need to increase the perpendicular force. You can easily increase this by simply increasing the angle between the rope and the ladder. The greater the angle, the greater this perpenicular force, thus the smaller the force you will need to apply to the winch. At minimum, put it at eye level. If you want it super easy, toss a line up to a branch up top and loop it around the back of the tree. You do this to anchor the top so the stand doesn't pull it out from the tree as it rises. Now attach a pulley to that and feed the rope that is attached to the stand through the pulley. Attach the winch to this rope. Now pull the line that you tossed up so it lifts the pulley up. You want this pulley to be ideally at the same height as the stand. With this setup, the pulley redirects the force applied to the winch and makes lifting tbus stand super easy. Now comes the easy part. You can easily crank the winch or simply just use your weight to pull it it. I like to have fun so when I do this, I climb up the tree and rappel down and use my weight to pull the stand vertical! Takes all of a couple of seconds for the stand to rotate 90 degrees. Nothing wrong with what you did. It's just very inefficient given the angle you are working with. The other issue is the huge compression force on the ladder stresses it because it wants to buckle under the load. Once up, we brace the ladder with cables or steel bars to keep it from buckling. In this state, there are no braces so the ladder has to resist all this buckling force. The smaller the buckling forces, the better for you stand. Cheers and stay safe friend.
