This Old House general contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner purchase and install a kitchen wall cabinet. (See below for a shopping list, tools, and steps.)
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Shopping List for Hanging a Kitchen Wall Cabinet:
- Kitchen wall cabinet [amzn.to/2ZDMSDI]
- 3-inch cabinet screws [amzn.to/2Prpf1l], used to fasten the cabinet to the wall
Tools List for Hanging a Kitchen Wall Cabinet:
- 4-foot level [amzn.to/2MMw630], used to check for plumb and level alignment
- Stud finder [amzn.to/2Hygz2C]
- Drill/driver [amzn.to/2ZB9WCN]
- Tape measure [amzn.to/2zyXmcI]
- Combination bit [amzn.to/2MLCQOI], used to bore pilot holes
- Cabinet jack [amzn.to/2HzVwwG], used to support the cabinet
Steps for Hanging a Kitchen Wall Cabinet:
1. Use a 4-foot level to see if the wall is plumb.
2. Mark the locations of the wall studs, then drill a small hole at each mark to confirm the stud locations.
3. Measure from a corner of the wall to the center of each stud, then transfer those dimensions to the back of the cabinet. Be sure to take into account the overhanging face frame.
4. Drill a pilot hole through the back of the cabinet at each stud location.
5. Reach inside the cabinet and hand-thread one 3-inch cabinet screw into each pilot hole.
6. Stand a cabinet jack in place below the cabinet location, then adjust the jack to the proper height.
7. Set the cabinet on top of the jack and press it tight to the wall.
8. Check the cabinet for level, then use a the drill to drive the screws through the upper back of the cabinet and into the wall studs.
9. Drill pilot holes and screw through the bottom of the cabinet, too.
10. Set a glass panel into each door and secure it with screw-on plastic clips.

When using a drill to look for a stud, I like to locate both sides of the stud to confirm the exact center. It only takes a minute and no one is going to see the extra holes.

A small detail, watch how Tommy holds his pencil when he's making the horizontal marks on the back of the cabinets. He rests his ring finger on the bottom of the piece he's marking...all three of those marks are perfectly inlined with one another. That's years of experience.

Uh, that's a basic carpentry technique... it doesn't take years to learn or get good at that. I learned that in wood shop in Junior High in the early 1980s.

To those of us young folk who never had the opportunity to have wood shop in junior high this is SUPER valuable. People in charge of construction companies need to be clamoring to get wood shop back in schools because most people in younger generations don't have the opportunity to learn or hone any skills like this unless they have the free extra money and time to experiment with DOY and lots of people who might be excellent in this field just don't have that opportunity. (Also speaking from South Carolina which doesn't ha e unions therefore almost no apprenticeships)

@VatsalSingh007
@VatsalSingh007 8 жыл бұрын
+Joel J house are built very differently here in India. Here houses are build with brick for walls and concrete for pillars and roofs. Wood is not used as construction material. Apart from that tiling or kitchen cabinets are similar stuff. Also one major difference is heating/cooling and water storage. We mostly have hot weather in most part of India, so we majorly do cooling only and we do it via split AC or Window AC (cheaper) except of offices and shopping mall or similar places centralised cooling is done. And for water storage we have overhead tank as houses have flat roof to store water, so no issue of water pressure as gravity takes care of it.

No bug screening was something I never understood. A few years ago, I stayed Barbados for a month as part of a running a summer day camp for the disabled kids. (Gave a much needed break to their parents.) We lived in a local house. I loved the big louvered windows at night. They let the cool breeze in--along with every mosquito in the country. Folks would spend the evenings slapping at the bugs. All that misery could be eliminated with simple screening. Had I known, I would have brought some rolls with me. :) I don't get why it isn't used? Not available? Too expensive?

Dude any pro would leave those doors on those are plywood cabinets and don't weigh much. Yes on much bigger or heavier cabinets that's a good idea.. Toms a real pro. Trust me I know.. I bet most people commenting have not hung more than 50 cabinets in there life. When you have done it as much as a real carpenter you learn to take shortcuts that make sense and don't hurt anything.. there for the more you do it the better you get thus making more money..

Careful, as often the back of a particle board cabinet is only 1/4" thick. Rather flimsy to hand a wall cabinet on. Especially because it will be filled with dishes, glasses or other heavy objects. Good thing he drilled into the 3/4" rail across the top of the cabinet. Sometimes the screws can be drilled through the inside of the top portion of the cabinet rail. (the white part on the top.
