Did ya harvest dry beans yet? Now what? What to do after ya harvest dry beans to dry them down for the best storage? How do you shell 'em without doing it by hand?
We can help answer your questions. Harvesting dry beans is so rewarding!
First hang 'em and let them dry down completely. Then-- let your feet do the work! We'll show you how! In this video we show you how to dry, shell, and winnow starting with a bundle of Hidatsa Shield pods and finishing with kitchen ready dry beans!
Kids love this-so if there are younger kids around, involve them in the fun! Enjoy!
Our best to you, Theresa & Dan

I’m Theresa. My husband, Dan and I grow organic garden seed and I make gardening videos. I live in Southeast corner of North Dakota on the 46th parallel where we garden in a zone 4. I throw dry great northern beans pods in a pillow case. Toss them in the dryer on air dry. Most pop out if they are really dry pods.

Interesting strategy! One caution-- if you plan to save any of the seed for replanting the next year, make sure you aren't cracking seed coats while in the drier. This will cause the seed to dry out and will seriously reduce the germination rate. Won't really matter if you are just eating them but not great for replanting.

@@cody481 I learned a new one. You just cut the whole plant off with dry pods and fold a plastic tarp around them and ride you car tire back and forth over them. It works.

Yes...that's why I said air dry.

I saw a old timer showed how he did his dry bean plants. He would lay the whole dry plants in a tarp on the driveway. He would then fold over the sides of the tarp over it and then slowly ride back and forth over the beans plants with his truck to split the pods. I tried this and it does work. I then took out the plant stems and then used two bins pouring the beans back and forth in the wind to separate the chafe out.

Use the lightest vehicle you have-- to make sure you don't crack the seed coats. Doesn't matter is you're just gonna eat 'em but if you want to save seed and plant some back next year, cracking the seed coat will affect the germination. But YES-- this will make very quick work of it!

That's a great idea! Only caution is if you're gonna save any of those beans for seed. You might crack the seed coats with the weight of a car. A small lawn tractor might work better!

Gosh this is such a process. And we don't have such a frame. So something else we need to get somehow. No thanks, I'll shell them the old fashioned way.

Hi from NJ. Nice video. What do you do with the shells?. I AM DESPERATE looking for that. I am willing to pay (at least for 10oz) for shipping costs and any expense for bagging, etc if you could sent it to me. I use for medicinal purposes. Thank you so much.
