How to Haul a Mountain Bike Over the Tailgate of a Toyota Tacoma

Here I set up a third-generation Toyota Tacoma to haul a mountain bike over the tailgate with a bike pad. In this case, the vehicle is a 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. The pad is a Dakine, size L (so meant for full-size trucks; so not ideal, as the Tacoma is a midsize) and the bike is a 2017 Santa Cruz Bronson, size L. I've got another video doing this exact same thing with a Honda Ridgeline, and there's a video in my Instagram stories (@MountainWestCarSpotter) where I do it with a Ram 1500. I'm hoping to do it with other trucks like the Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, Jeep Gladiator, Ford F-150, and Chevrolet Silverado as well.

For added security and stability for the bike I’d run a strap over the back tire or between the back tire and the seat post and strap it down to the hooks in the truck bed.

you don't tie the bike down or secure it in any additional way? I would be afraid it would bounce out of the back when going over bumps in the road or by the wind at highway speed

Would prob run a ratchet strap through the frame(s) to the back most truck tie down points.

An easy strap or bungee would solve that prob. But they don’t bounce or move a lot if you on a good road.

Awesome, thanks, I have never hauled a bike like this, I've only used a tree in my hitch. I have a '22 Frontier, pretty much the same colour as yours.

Couldn't you also just lay it down in the bed of the Tacoma backwards and then shut the tailgate, that is usually what I do , the only thing that I have to do is turn the handlebars perpendicular to the frame so the front tire will fit in the bed when the tailgate is shut

You could absolutely do this and there's a strong argument that it's better. Tailgate pad minimizes contact with the components, and makes it easier to haul more than one bike, I suppose.

sick bike, Santa Cruz all the way (have a 2019 Tallboy) Just upgraded from a 2012 tacoma to a 2020, with the wide tailgate at top. Seems like the bikes don't want to sit as flush at the downtube because of the wider profile of the tailgate. Having an issue using the adjustable straps on my dakine pad, I wonder how to remedy this, may need to call dakine directly.

$150-$335??? Harbor freight 40"x50" moving blanket $4, 1" x 12" lashing strap, 2 pack, $5... Barnum was right, there IS a sucker born every minute! And by the way, you need to strap that down. In the case of an accident, you will be liable for damages that your bike causes when it flies out and becomes a 30-40lb projectile, along with a nice juicy fine for driving with an unsecured load... Here in PA... § 4903. Securing loads in vehicles. (a) General rule.--No vehicle shall be driven or moved on any highway unless the vehicle is so constructed or loaded as to prevent any of its load from dropping, sifting, leaking or otherwise escaping. (b) Fastening load.--Every load on a vehicle shall be fastened so as to prevent the load or covering from becoming loose, detached or in any manner a hazard to other users of the highway. Penalty for violation of subsection (a), (b) or (c).--A person who owns or who operates a vehicle in violation of subsection (a), (b) or (c) and, as a result of the violation, any item, piece, fragment or part of the load escapes and causes injury to a person or damage to another vehicle or other property commits a summary offense and shall, upon conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine of not less than $300 nor more than $1,000.

Would you recomend using a hitch bike rack to transport a bike? Or you think it may damage the bike?
@ChrisONeillUSA
@ChrisONeillUSA 2 жыл бұрын
Any hitch rack that comes into contact with the bike frame could in theory damage the finish on the frame, but I think it's unlikely. With that said, for a hitch rack, I recommend the 1UP Super Duty, which holds the bike via tension arms that only come into contact with the tires, nothing else. It's also made in the USA mostly of anodized aluminum - zero plastic - and has a clever locking system. I get frustrated by the junk racks sold at places like REI - they fade, they rust, they lose value. The 1UP racks do not - they last forever. I have a 4-bike Super Duty myself. www.1up-usa.com/

That's awesome for one bike, but how about more bikes? I'm considering renting a Tacoma. Could I haul 4 mtn bikes?
@ChrisONeillUSA

Sure. Rule of thumb is a max of 5 for a midsize truck like the Tacoma.

On the highway would you bother tying the bike down or does it stay in there well?
@hostilityy
@hostilityy 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a thin piece of metal, not a sail. However it does tend to move sideways so I just strap it down a little bit for some tension to push tires downward into the bed rubber mat. No movement then.
