I like to play casual for years, i always try to play casual and play decks that are fun and easy to show how yugioh can be fun, ive managed to make 6 people play yugioh and 4 of them never played card games, also casual decks are like gimmick puppet, ghostrick, or even just a monster type, i swear so many people think branded is casual it sucks.

So I do this thing sometimes. If I need a card or two like tomorrow for hanging out. I'll print out the highest resolution picture of a card I can find, shrink it down to a card size and cut it out. Sleeve it with a real card so it still feels like the real thing. I've even photo shopped effects before so it matches proper errata. It's the most broke-boy jank thing I do for this game, but sometimes you just need a quick copy of something for a casual session.

Exactly what I'm doing. This way my friends won't have to stress about buying their own decks (or only buy if they really want to own some themselves). Don't want to pressure anyone. Structure decks are affordable anyway and it might be a good idea to buy boosters for variety (everyone is allowed to switch like 10-15 cards with other cards, while I find some way to get the original decks together after play).

Playing with the cards you like is so important. It's the main reason I run spellcaster or Dark Magician decks. Like yeah, I'm never gonna get to Diamond rank in Master Duel with it, but I love those kinds of cards and they play at a more low/mid-tier level that I just enjoy playing. Combos are shorter, I can have some fun/powerful cards without it feeling too overpowered, it's just fun! I really should try some older formats too. Watching Rare Hunters & Slifer Slackers makes me so nostalgic for how I played the game with friends back in the day.

I really enjoyed this video, i think it encapsulates why i also enjoyed rare hunters and the current slifer slackers series so much. Your simply playing with what you've got and its interesting to see what strats you create. Me and my twin bro play casually with customized rules. I usually play elemental heroes and he usually goes for cyber dragon but has been branching out to crysal beasts and ancient gears. He also bought me a harpie structure deck for my birthday so i can make a harpie style deck now. Casual is truly so much fun with the right people.

Shoutout to the few casuals (like myself) who enjoy a little Legacy of the Duelist. That game alone as made me aware of many different cards that I either ended up pulling IRL at a later date and being happy about it (like blue eyes twin burst), or ended up buying singles of (like malefics, red eyes darkness metal dragon, some relinquished archetype cards) that look real neat. Probs not the best game to play against real people, but I don't have to take the duels very seriously and I can go against the decks the anime characters use.

Casual is how i feel YuGiOh was intended to be played, just a group of friends playing with what they've got. My most fond memories of YuGiOh was when i first started getting back into it a few years ago with an old Rise of the Sea Emperor structure deck i had since 2013. Teaching my friends at work how to play with Atlanteans vs. Blue-Eyes (which had just released the structure deck at the time). MAN those days were fun, back before we knew what tf Link monsters worked or how quick-play spells should be used. Almost all of my decks are mid-powered, stuff like Gaia, Gate Guardians, Dinosaurs, Cyber Dragons, things that aren't meta but still have enough power to pull off some cool stuff. I even have two decks of generic Dragons and Warriors that i like to use to teach people how to play. I just wished i had a big group to play with these days.

Really nice to have a bit of positive content for once... Things have been so negative as of late. If "We all hate this game!" then why do we shame people for playing it in their own way they find fun..? My locals started $15 & $25 tourneys. Theyve been incredible. We have a few cards we have banned (floodgates mostly), but I've been loving Plunder Patroll. Its basically become a way to play our pet decks pure and without meta staples/hand traps/floodgates etc. Very slow paced and back-and-forth.

This is a great video! Definitely enjoyed it. I find a majority of Yugioh content across the platform is always competitive focused and it's always nice to have more content for the casual side of Yugioh because it's a lot of fun and videos like this will help out a lot of people who are looking for that kind of Yugioh. Finding a group of people who want to play at that lower power levels is huge for having a true experience. I primarily spend all my time playing Yugioh with my duel group and we all love casual decks and play. We follow a lot of the same principles you guys do when playing against each other on the day to day.

This is a super valuable video you guys made. Shout out to Alec for representing the real core of this game in my eyes. I've never wanted to play meta really, I'd pick up a meta relevant engine and then quickly pawn it off to a more competitive friend bc I just straight up don't have the same amount of fun as say my favorite archetype Ancient Gears. With friends playing the same power level, you get more interesting interaction and memorable duels all around. Love you guys for doing this for the community at this time and era.

I've built a yugioh cube out of an old collection two months ago. It includes everything for everyone such as Dragon Rulers, Lightsworn, Chaos, Equipment-beatdown and Synchros/XYZs. Also you play with 3-6 people at the same time, 1v1v1v1(...) This experience completely changed Yugioh and its casual fun for me! I'd highly recommend it! In total I've played with 11 people so far - most of those were tryhards from my locals. And they all loved it! Just Summoning a huge boss monster and deciding if you want to attack the guy with a backrow - they could have Mirror Force/Sakuretsu Armor.

This is some good advice. I've pretty much been out of the game for a year now, and have been on the fence about returning. The unfortunate thing is that at the game shop I play at, our Thursday "casual day" has turned into a tournament day. Granted, it's alternate format, but I have zero desire to play in any sort of tournament setting because I know exactly how it's going to go

I can relate to #3 extremely hard. After just getting back into (advanced) Yugioh after a very long time, I felt myself either not enjoying the current meta decks aesthetically or their playstyle. After months of trying to find a "meta" deck I could remotely find fun, I just dropped and almost quit trying to get back. Until, at one point, I just decided to just try out one of my favorite decks for fun, and realized it's not actually that bad right now. It not only saved me a lot of time, but it saved me a lot of money and I'm enjoying the games I do play a lot more!

I only play Yu-Gi-Oh with some other friends of mine and we just play our favorite decks with whatever modern staples we can get our hands on. First off, great video. Would love to see more content like this in the future. Secondly, a few locals have been using the price point formats, which are amazing. Basically, you are not allowed to run a deck that would cost over a certain amount to buy singles for. So, like if the price is 20$, your entire deck (Main, extra, side) cannot be over 20$ total from TCGplayer. It and Edison format are formats I have found the best of luck dragging new players into. Also, shout out to Alec for being another zombie player.

God, I feel this so much. For the longest time ever it feels like, I've been putting off on starting up Master Duel. But then a friend I played with and I decided to play card games the following weekend (we were playing something else with some others), and we settled on Master Duel. I finally had a reason to actually boot it up and learn some basics and get a few decks to use when I would play with my friend. Then came the day and time we agreed on for playing and... We had a blast! We were both beginners so neither of us had anything crazy, nor did we have a grasp of everything. We basically decided we would play together somewhat regularly going forward~ We're both now working on decks to take each other on with next time we play. One deck I'm working on is Dinomorphia as the aesthetic and to some extent the playstyle drew me in (maybe because I play Bloodcraft in Shadowverse, which revolves around damaging yourself for payoffs), while my friend is working on a deck of magicians. Oh, and I'm optimising a Ninja deck because that's what I used for most of the duels we had on our first session (not to mention he found Rust Mist a pain because he was using a deck that really likes special summoning during one duel XD And he went "That's so disgusting" when I shared with him that multiples of it on board stack as that was something we were both wondering about while playing)

i think my big piece of advice for playing casually at locals or in those more competitive environments is to set goals and personal "win conditions". this can be like disrupting plays or sneaking in your own big plays against the top decks, it can be resolving a specific card that you really like (for me its time wizard of tomorrow), or even just surviving a certain number of turns. you won't necessarily win the round, but you will have accomplished something, and had fun. and in my experience, everyone around also has fun seeing the "little guy" get one over on the "big menace" meta deck. play towards fun and create memories. everyone will remember something like roulette spider turning accesscode back around on your opponent, and when the whole shop gets to have a laugh about "what just happened", everyone wins

These are the kind of videos why I love Team APS so much. Most other YugiTubers out there, while they do have some fun contents too, are still META and competitive tier centric in terms of their attitude and perspective (especially with complaining about Maxx-C like it’s the worst card to be ever made out there. As Paul has mentioned in one of the previous videos, Maxx-C is not the most broken card, it is just gets more broken as the deck you’re playing it in gets more stronger/broken) Also, Point #5 is something I learned to practice even in Master Duel. These days, I don’t even bother with opening selection packs anymore. I only go with structure decks and secret packs, and just live with the lower-powered cards by playing in the lower ranks

Me and my friends have always played like this! They are the ones who introduced me to the game in the first place (and did a terrible job at teaching me how to play or build decks lmao). One small issue I've identified in this "casual format" is that sometimes, due to the difference in the power levels of the decks, some duels aren't as interesting, because maybe some decks haven't recieved any support in ages. But it's still pretty fun, especially if you play some low power staples that help your deck (cosmic cyclone to out Zombie World for example)

This video is fantastic, and part of why I liked Magic for so long. My old yugioh play group liked to play the meta decks, and over time it was getting difficult to enjoy the game because the decks I liked (Burning Abyss, Lightsworn, etc) got power crept and couldn't keep up over the years. I really enjoy the formats where people can play what they like without being questioned "why are you playing that deck when X is better?". I'm starting to get into Edison format, and at least right now I can see myself playing it a lot lol.

I recently started using the format they use in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens anime show. I played Yugioh since GX and 5D's, and I also tasted the meta and some tournaments that burned me out of this game for several years. But since I use this fast-format of "draw until 5 cards each turn", "play with 3 zones per monsters and 3 magic/traps" and "you are no longer limited on 1 normal summon per turn" then I started get fun again, and I LOVE IT. I also tried some homebrew rules that I felt I needed, like "once per duel you can discard all cards you want from your hand and draw the same number" or "the duels can't last longer than 5-6 turns". Also "set cards go to GY in your 2nd next Standby Phase". This can sound weirs, but I promise it just works. Works better on classic decks without Links and Pendulum specially, but it can be fixed if you make a homebrew for that. Hope this can inspire someone to have fun again 💛

You touched on a great point, I feel like a lot of players aren’t enjoying the game because they’re playing decks they don’t particularly enjoy. Like yes play them to win tournaments and open packs but everyone has a favorite play style / deck and it’s always rarely viable / competent enough to play making yugioh tournaments kinda stale and lacking a lot of enjoyment in the matchups. Imo that’s what makes broad spec metas so good

I always play what i like and enjoy. Gladiator beasts, black luster rituals, monarchs, knights of face, etc. None of them are truly competitive (maybe monarchs if you stretch it a bit) but they are very much fun.

On the topic of video games, maybe consider Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution! The card pool is a few years out of date, but you've got access to more than 10000 cards, the "main story" has you reliving major duels from the first 6 anime series (which you can also play using your own decks), and the challenge mode has you going up against some pretty powerful decks at times!

Love playing Monarchs (tournament or casual) Lair of Darkness, Raid Raptor, Cyber Dragon/Cyber Dark, even up to date Blue Eyes and Dark Magician. I made up to date character decks of Yugi and Kaiba so me and the GF can play together and she can learn. She loves it and rocks spellcasters 🙌

Good video. I enjoy playing custom GOAT format with my sibling. Only cards released 2006 and earlier, you can only play 1 copy of any card, some banned cards like Change of Heart that are OP etc. Having no duplicates makes it more fun to flesh out decks with other non-optimal options.

Just getting back into Yu-Gi-Oh after like 20 years on Master Duel, trying to get my lil bro into it. Like he said in the video, just play cards you like and have fun. I play blue-eyes rn because it's pretty straightforward. Working on building a hybrid Obelisk, red-eyes, summoned skull deck atm

Great video, i really love playing blackwings even though there casual. There was such a demand for casual play my local shop does a competitive tournament and a casual tournament with a way stricter custom banlist. Would highly recommend seeing if your local shop would do something similar.

I really enjoy Speed Duels. The lnly downside, some cards are only available by completing certain in-game events. I'm very busy and managed to complete some, but no worries because the events do eventually come back, just couple of months later.

I totally agree with these tips. Although im somewhat reluctant to play against other players, i do love to play. My favorite deck is the adamancipator deck. It feels fun and fluid for me to use! No deck is perfect, and it is frustrating to be completely stalled and unable to play when someone uses the "solitaire" combo and just beats you outright. I still love yugioh regardless. I hope the next casual yugioh video game will have more updated card pools.

I very much appreciate and enjoy your videos Team APS. Yes I’m just a casual player. I don’t like playing with the new metta decks. I played it back in 2002 to 2007. And I very much enjoyed that format. I have enjoyed some of the new support cards. But I enjoy playing anime style decks of my favorite characters from the anime. It’s been fun the last few months getting together with all my old friends and us pulling out the old duel cards. I hope to see you guys in Austin Texas. When the Yu-Gi-Oh regional qualifiers in town. I’ll just be going as a spectator. I hope it’s OK for me to come up to you guys say hello and maybe get a picture.

I enjoyed trying to play competitively for a while, but ever since I moved away from my locals, started my masters degree, I thought playing yugioh with anyone was out of reach. But master duel has been really cool. I still get frustrated and struggle in ranked, but the casual mode can be a fun place to test out decks and have fun, where I don’t have to physically by cards. Honestly, I’m more of a collector now, but I like to play with causal/mid range builds of things like Dark Magician, HEROes, Poker Knights, Silent Magician/Swordsman, etc. and have a blast when I meet up with old friends and we play with these types of decks.

Just play magic. The mental gymnastics I had to do to justify paying to play this game was stressing me and my friends out . We grew up playing and decided to get back into it about a year ago. We finally made the switch and it’s immediately fun and affordable for everyone in the friend group and we even got our girlfriends into it. We don’t have to make up all these weird conditions like “ no hand traps” we can all customize our decks the way we want and play them the way the want. It’s honestly everything I wanted yu-gi-oh oh to be growing up. I emplore you , just try it. It doesn’t hurt to try. We also never have a problem finding other people to play with at local shops.

As someone who is barely coming back into this game, from the 90s. I find this channel, and these videos very interesting/fun to watch. Here in Vegas idk where to look for locals. Would like to try to duel, I'm not a top tier duelist. I consider myself a 3rd rate duelist with a 4th rate deck. Anyways, this channel is great. Thank you.

I gotta say the biggest tip I can offer is be patient to and get ready to be confused! 😂 Like the English language sometimes some things mean the same thing, or have their own interpretation when it comes to the spoken and unspoken rules and regulations of the game, and when it comes to the thousands of types of decks their are out there get ready to be patient and learn. Specially at some place like locals the better you know your opponents deck the more comfortable you’d feel playing this format 🔥 great video though guys?

This is good advice. Enjoying the game really is made or broken by who & what you're playing with, "more fun with friends" and "communication is important" very much apply, and playing "The Strongest Deck™" won't necessarily net strong results if you don't get along with it. Part of that is getting used to the deck and it's lines, but it's harder to spot new lines of play on the spot when you're working with something that doesn't click for you, so it's easier to play better using cards you like and have some amount of interest/ enthusiasm towards (even though "playing better" doesn't necessarily mean "performing better depending on the power disparity). It's nice how calm and relaxed the tone was in this video. It wasn't particularly fast or slow paced and it wasn't that high energy, just a chill "here's some advice" which fits the subject and feels very approachable.

I play casually with my friends, I'm the only one using hand traps, but it's even true that most of them have much better built decks that can recover easily such as D/D/D while I'm with the 3x crystal beasts structure (I could win more easily with conclave control but I don't like the play style of it, I built my rogue), so it's oddly more balanced. We still have lots of fun together and we bring cards everywhere we go when together, usually to the countless nights at the pub where one of us works. Thank you for the video, it made me feel like sharing. Guys don't ever feel wrong or stupid for playing in public with friends, you're probably having the best time and if people have to judge they probably are not.

I needed to see something like this. I started going to locals recently, but the power and skill level still basically feels like bigger tournaments while I play a structure deck with a few upgrades that I didn't feel too bad about getting. So I was wondering if I should even bother with paper play, since it's just more frustrating than fun and I hate feeling upset over people just playing the game. My first ever game in paper was against Kashtira. Yeah. A warm welcome. I think after my next visit, I might just stick with Master Duel. At least there I don't need to fork out for fun decks that I know won't win, and it's easy to play, I dunno, Starry Knights with friends there!

My friends and I like to do Archetype duels. We have a wheel with many of the different Yu-Gi-Oh! archetypes on them (Cyber dragons, deskbots, etc.) We then spin it and whatever it lands on, we have to quickly build a deck with that archetype. Has helped expose us to new cards and make decks that we never would have made otherwise.

A sort of sub tip I would add, have multiple ready decks, if you have the cards for it, structure decks are pretty great for this. I have friends who like the game but get kind of bored using or going against the same deck over and over, so having extra decks you can switch to or loan out for a duel or two (just be sure to get it back, only loan to people who you KNOW will return it) gives that little extra variety. Also if you're making the decks, you can keep them relatively balanced to make sure it's not just a one-sided bore when they go head to head.

Me personally, I keep up with all the news of Yu-Gi-Oh, like new cards, rules, staples and things of that nature. But I can't afford to buy that much stuff to keep in competitive territory. What I love to do is get me and my cousin together and have a tournament with the decks I have built (40). When each duel is over we discussed the pros and cons of each deck and give/take suggestions on how to make each deck better. We've been doing this casually for 10 years now and it's just so much fun, in my opinion, to sit down and discuss how a deck can get better

I used to enjoy Yugioh when I first redescovered it back in 2019 (yes, I knew yugioh back in 2013 but don’t know the rules. I just found it again through the exodia meme). But when I got into playing online, I either lose to a great deck or win to a weak deck and had a hard time returning to the game. I really want to return and have fun the way I want and this video gave me hope on returning into the game.
