Best description of plate use I have seen. I cryo treat hammers in liquid nitrogen. I keep about 20,000 gallons around. Seriously. BTW, it will not get to 400 below. Also, each time it is loaded and offloaded it warms up never to go back down. We store over 5 million biological items in ln2 is why I have such access. Also an inventory challenge. Done this for 65 years this year!

Nice set up a good results. I have exclusively been using AEBL and send out for HT. Problem for me is that I only rough in a short bevel prior to HT to avoid warps. Being that I only have a 1x30 HF, the finish grinding takes forever due to the extreme-hardness f the steel. I think I will start grinding my bevels much more from now on prior to the HT. At least until I get a better grinder.

There's some issue with the cheatsheet. I can't dowload it on the website... In the video, when you refer to a temperature, you're talking Farenheit and not Celsius, correct? I assume that the Cheatsheet has the different temperatures to get to different hardnesses, but in case not, do you know to which temp i should heat up a blade to get to 58-60 HRC in aeb-l ?

Can a heat treat be achieved with a forge?

Just use clay, brother. Don't waste all that foil and fiddling. This way you can choose what part of the blade gets exposure, too. If you want to go a step further you can double case it, case the edge with the carbon, then case the entire blade with extra steel pressed firmly against the rest as heat sinks, then directionally heat the casement you've made. I don't know if that makes sense without a diagram, but it really is as simple as it sounds. If you want real value for your money I suggest also looking into cryonic treatment of blades. For drill bits a thirty minute bath in liquid nitrogen doubles even triples it's lifetime. Good heat treating also includes cooling, not just heating. Edit: I wrote that before you mentioned cryo! I'm SO pleased to hear someone in your field is even aware of this! Although using dry ice you're just wasting your time. You won't get any crystallization or strengthening from that little change. You desperately need to make yourself a liquid nitrogen generator, you can bang one together for fifty bucks.

I’ll just send mine to you and let you throw it in with yours. Lol. I make mine out of free steel, 304-304L. It seems hard enough and holds an edge well.

Please help if you could please ..I have some blanks of some kind of stainless steel that my old boss had someone make or cut out if you will ..but I have Tried and tried to shape the knife or what it's called sorry IAM drawing a blank right now ..but anyways I have used a hand held belt sander and even a 4 inch grinder but the grinder is not what I want to do when it comes to shaping my knife before the heat treating ..so with that all being said I can't hardly dent the knife with the files or even the belt sander it takes almost hours break the surface of the knife ..I told my old boss who had is friend make these blanks for me ..to tell him and my old boss this is nothing for a beginner to learn on ..so I hope you kinda of get what IAM trying to say here..hope to hear from you..thank u ..and nice video keep them coming . !!

I was dismayed to recently learn that Bob Loveless sent his blades off for heat treating as did Jim Merritt who ran the shop later. How lame. If one doesnt heat treat their knives themselves, then all they are doing is assembling knife-making components and materials. And Loveless did stock removal only. He was basically assembling kits from parts created and processed by other people but giving the final product his own twist.. I dont even see where someone would get the motivation if they werent doing it all themselves. Jay Fisher says he considers heat treating to be the main thing that distinguishes a knife from a hunk of metal.
