Here's a drill that you can use that will help a horse that has anxiety and anticipates running through the middle of a reining pattern.

I love how this video also goes into rider problems and anxiety. Could we see more videos that would help with rider related issues or improving our showmanship? I think us Non-Pros would really benefit !

My favourite exercise to have a horse get focused on me is the 5 second game. Very simple really, change what you're doing every 5 seconds

@@mattmillsreining1 yes he is! Hey Matt.. had the pleasure of riding a mare that nearly 18 years old the other day that I thought was absolutely awesome. Was wondering what the oldest horses you typically work with/show are? And if you do find occasion to ride more middle aged horses what special care do you give them? We see a lot of 2, 3, and 4 year olds. So just curious.

"that will help a horse that has anxiety and anticipates running through the middle of a reining pattern." With all due respect Mr. Mills. Anxiety is a human emotion and if you’re referring to the rider’s anxiety rather than the horse’s then please disregard my subsequent criticism here. Horses do not possess the part of the brain that interprets or expresses emotion in the same sense that humans do. Lastly, I am not some novice just taking potshots at you. I stood and bred Colonel’s Smoking Gun (Gunner) for his first two breeding seasons at Kim’s place in New Jersey and was there when Brian scored a 233 on him in the 2001 USET semifinals. As well as the fact that I have been a professional horseman for well over 45 years, now retired. But please keep in mind I am not in any way trying to diminish your spectacular accomplishments in the reigning world. The only other thing I would say and maybe it’s because I am very traditional when it comes to reining horses. I am not a fan of that peanut roller look that many of your horses have. And I know you come from a WP background, but it just bothers me to see that in this sport and especially when it is coupled with the dead tails, and you know what I mean when I say that. Yes, I am acutely familiar with that procedure, because I use to manage Alan Donell’s veterinary clinic in Pilot Point Texas. And I know you know who that is.😉 Be safe and well and continued success to you and your team.
