I recommend warm water and q tips do you don't accidentally drown the baby ... have had to help several. My daughter did one at 10 yo (perfectly) and it's so im portant that people understand that if there is bleeding, apply light pressure with qtip and STOP... so many video of people just ripping at the membrane while there is blood, not realizing the baby is not ready! 😢

I have had to help out a few egg bound chicks over the years doing the same process. Even if a bit of the membrane is hardened and stuck to the chick it will eventually come off once you get the chick free from the egg. I like to give the chicks the best chance possible.

2 of my chicks died in this stage but they had barely started pecking out the egg. So when do you know when to step in? I thought it might have been too early to help them out the egg. When I did break the chick out it looked perfectly healthy. Like no deformities and stuff.

If the chick has pipped and not made it out of the shell within 12 hours, I would intervene as a last resort. The more you hatch, the more you will get a sense for when it is time to intervene. Most healthy chicks will unzip quickly. 12 hours has been our “golden hour” for intervention.

@@redbarron22 we’ll do a video on incubating troubleshooting since we’ve had several of the same questions. Try to candle at least every 3 days to check fertility. Use a good incubator- we use Hovabator Genesis and it is well worth it. Make sure your temp and humidity are accurate and run at the normal range. Make sure your eggs are turned every day at least 3 times daily until day 18. If all else fails, you may just have had a tough run of eggs to hatch. We’ve had a shrink rapped egg on every batch that we’ve hatched this year when normally we don’t so the weather may be affecting our hatches.

I made the same mistake by listening to everyone on the internet. Now I follow my gut. I raise ducks and I know when it’s time to intervene. Just pay close attention after they internally pip, if they don’t externally pip within 24 hours you’ll need to make a safety hole unless the chick will use up all the air in the air sac and suffocate. If mine don’t begin to externally pip within another 24 hours I will make the safety hole larger, tap and talk to the chick to stimulate it as well. If still no progress is made I will intervene as long as there are no visible veins. I have not lost even one with intervention. Please don’t listen to people that say not to help, you could quite possibly be letting a perfectly healthy chick die that just wasn’t able to turn or was malpositioned. Sometimes a chick will not turn and begin pecking at the inside of the egg without piping into the air sac. When this happens you’ll see a grey bruise on the shell. You will immediately have to put a safety hole over the bruise unless your chick will suffocate and die. Adding the safety hole will give him the air he needs. When a chick is breech it will likely need assistance with hatching, but I’ve seen many breech chicks hatch on their own. We get very personally invested after watching these babies grow, and it’s a shame to turn your back on them when they could very easily be saved, exactly like the women in this video did! Go with your gut and intuition, not everyone on the internet is a professional with all the answers. ☺️ Good luck to you! ❤️
