How to Help Students Who Struggle with Consonant Blends

Consonant blends are in so many of the words students read and write! In this video, I’ll talk about the difference between consonant blends and digraphs. I’ll also go through what to do with students struggling to grasp blends.

yes!! many of my ELL students omit the second consonant in beginning consonant blends.

I have sort of a funny comment. I’m teaching my daughter who is very young and precocious reader. She flips some sustained cons. With some hard stops which is normal because she is three. HERES what I have to offer. I ILLUSTRATE / demonstrate the pronunciation and then say-to-spell and then ask her to recite what I wrote to help with pronunciation and articulation of sounds. After all, a child cannot be expected to consistently read a word they cannot say. “Mask” is an example. She often says “makss” and then I pull up a chalk board and we sound it out together as I write. This is a really effective practice for encoding and decoding with the added benefit of refining their speech. Just my .02. LOVE 💕 you Alison !!!! I wish I could just sit and listen to you instruct all day. You totally inspire me.

Yes. My 1st grader often misses a letter here and there. For example, words like: with, here and there

I notice speech issues popping up in blends so we stop and use a mirror and discuss the sounds. Then we do minimal pairs or the complexity approach etc at another time to work in the speech focus. Any other tips would be welcomed! As always, your videos are saved and watched several times until the skills are natural for me as a teacher- thank you so much!!

I just took the Science of Teaching Reading test in Texas. On the writing part I made the mistake of calling the blends "pr" and "gr" as digraphs. How bad will this affect me? The lesson iI included to help with this was correct, but I labeled it wrong. I only had 3 min. left on the test, so by the time I realized it, it was too late to change it. This is worth 20 percent of test. Do you think I will still get some credit?

At least you are reflecting after the fact and realize the difference :) Maybe since the blends also have two sounds, they'll give you credit but I truly don't know anything about scoring when it comes to how they do that! Curious how it goes for you though - let me know!

Hi, your video is cool, however your speech is waaay to rapid. I live and teach in the UAE and my students are ELLs. They are learning English and need slow, deliberate speech. I wish I could use this video. Cool video for students who are English speakers, though.
