This video explores the opening scene of Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, in my opinion, one of the most riveting expositional scenes in all of cinema.

Thank you for another great video! I often find it hard to weave exposition into the story without slowing the pacing.

Hi, yes, it is challenging. There are two important pitfalls-that the exposition slows the story, as you say, and that it appears as a forced and artificial feeding of information. That’s why I love the scene here-Tarantino succeeds in dramatising the conveyance of information! The information, through its mode of delivery, adds to the drama, tension and forward thrust of the story!

@@stavroshalvatzis2947 True, it is indeed challenging but can be mastered! I do a lot of world building for my stories so exposition is needed, though sometimes I do feel like I overdo it 😅

Is the approach to giving exposition different, depending on the type of media (movies, television, novels, etc.) a story is being told through?

There are different ways to hide exposition, the example I give being one, but a good approach is to hide exposition through dramatic action and/or emotion as a cover for it.

@@getwriting2204 No no... i meant your look and voice could totally be a character of its own there, and nobody would be thrown off.😅 Put on a nice dark cloak, mabye or a old timey suit.... A leather bookbag with gilded edged, and we got ourselves a literature and spells teacher at wizard school for sure. Really a awesome vibe my dude. Could only be topped by growing a curly mustache😅🥸
