How to Hit a Home Run | Baseball Hitting Drills (Pro Speed Baseball)
In this video we show you how to hit a home run... or more specifically how to give yourself the best opportunity to create backspin every time we swing the bat.
Creating backspin with a pure strike on the baseball is the hardest way we can hit a baseball.
In this video, not only do we give you awesome drill to start feeling backspin off the bat, we also show the the proper position to put your hands in to give you the best opportunity to create backspin.
I look forward to helping you improve your baseball in the future!
Thanks for watching and don't forget to Subscribe!!

I speak 5 leguanges I'm only saying this so people think I'm retarded it's the internet after all. And thank you for this videos.

Great advice! I play 12U baseball. After struggling during pool play during a tournament. I went home, relaxed. Watched some of your videos to see what you had to say, then I changed up my swing a little bit. Then the very next day, after adjusting my swing. I went 2 for 2 with two home runs! The 2nd one tied the game, which we eneded up winning. Then I crushed a double next game, going 1 for 1, with a walk. Amazing! You got me back on track! Thanks.

Ortiz points his bat knob at the catcher and when the front leg lands push against the ground, you should finish with just back toes on the ground, the bat point gives the bat lag for extra whip, in fact I have noticed most MLB hitters point the bat knob at the catcher. Watch Ortiz's swing, it's a thing of beauty, he really loads up on that back leg
@paulkite6383

Michael,The bat is in good positions but you should not be trying to create backspin by approaching from a descending blow standpoint. The attack angle needs to be positive(meaning traveling up) not negative(going down) and hit the ball below center. The furthest a ball can be hit was shown on sports science and the bat path was traveling up at 30 degrees contacting the ball below center- which creates the backspin and the lift necessary for monster homeruns. Almost all video of extra base hits that are in the air show the bat traveling up into contact- and not descending as you mention.

Im glad i discovered a video of yours using techniques on how to hit home runs. While i do think that getting backspin on the ball is important for hitting the ball over long dostances, how exactly that is achieved is where i think you are a little one dimensional in this approach presented. There is a BIG reason why Ted Williams insisted that a "slight upswing" is best. The Hips and also the Shoulders play vital roles in maintaining and establishing the slight up swing that Ted mentioned and talked about all the time. I don't see how you can establish the plane that you need to take with just the hands taking the bat to the ball I do know that Ted talked about how he felt like his hands and forearms felt like it was "100" percent energy being used but not in his "hips and shoulders" because he wanted to feel like he had something left (80-85% operating capacity) to maintain control. I like how you use the setup of the keeping the hands near the shoulders to establish the swing going towards the ball, but i feel by just having them Only it that position limits a batter on other more advantageous positions that a batter can use for hitting the ball for power if done properly. For example, Ted talked about in "The Science of Hitting" about how he used to hold The bat perpendicular to the ground to "help get the ball in the air better." His hands at setup were just below shoulder level for the most part. He mentioned that the hands were a matter of feel and that if you gave five farm boys five axes you'd probably get five different hand postiions, but as long as the position allows you to hit anything naturally within the strike you were alright. He said also mentioned how he was "always trying to hit like Foxx or Greenburg or somebody else and then going back to his own way." I dont mean to criticize what youre doing he i just feel like you're leaving out key components that one of the best batters to ever play the game and the 1st one in my mind who broke down scientifically what happens in the batters box.

Thanks again for the comment Jasmin! The drill in this video is designed to feel backspin off the bat, and the setup of the drill (if executed properly) promotes backspin. If you watch the videos posted in your other comment from earlier, you can see how the physics work with taking your hands to the ball. Simply: The speed, weight, and momentum of the barrel takes care of the "slightly upward" swing plane. This happens naturally with how the bat swings. Attempting to force this "upward" angle causes issues due to the hitter attempting to manipulate an object (the bat) he/she should be swinging with high amounts of speed. At Pro Speed Baseball, we don't have a set way we thing hitters should swing the bat, simply we have parameters that hitters should fall into to be efficient. Having the hands a little lower than shoulder height is perfectly fine, until they get too low, and vice-versa with higher. (There are many things in the swing like this!) I truly appreciate the critique, it makes me a better instructor to go over my own teachings! However, I would add some advice. There are a lot of great athletes out there who are amazing at what they do. This doesn't necessarily mean they are the best for explaining/teaching how to do those things. Ted Williams was a phenomenal legend of a hitter, and has some invaluable advice when it comes to hitting, yet he speaks a lot about what he "feels" versus what's actually happening from a bio-mechanical and physics perspective. Every athlete is different and what feels certain ways to some athletes might not be the same for others. We have a great video going over how this works here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrF9arZjtcWwho0.html Thank you again for the comment! And again, if you have any more questions on this or anything else, just let us know! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

Ted Williams is right. There should be a slightly upward swing plane. Coaches who teach their players and instruct them to swing level mean well but may not quite understand the natural swing path, if performed correctly, does have an upward slope. So, when one says take a level swing, many viewers might actually believe that level means no upward path at all.

I hear a lot about hitting the ball squarely, is this something I should be teaching my 9 yr old? Would it be a good idea to make some type of mark on the lower half of the ball to teach him to get more back spin? We watched your video today on "Bat Lag",he was very uncomfortable carrying out what he learned from the video,Is there any way/words I can convey to him to help him better understand? I tried telling him he's not gonna get it on the 1st day but you know kids they wanna impress dad,by that's not important to me,what's important to me is correct fundamentals! Thanks for your videos!

Hitting the ball down and hard is awesome! If you are driving the ball down and hard well, I would suggest sticking to it! You are simply fractions off from smoking line drives! The point of this drill is to promote proper back spin so you can feel how the ball is suppose to come off the bat when struck properly. So again, keep driving it down and hard and if you happen to catch contact slightly lower on the ball, then you will get the desired result from the drill! Good Luck! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

Hi Michael. Another great video. Would your swing approach be the same if it were an inside pitch? Would you still try and hit the inside of the ball? As the videos tee is set up low middle of the plate. Thanks tt
@ProSpeedBaseball
@ProSpeedBaseball 8 жыл бұрын
+Tt8377 Thanks Tt8377! The drill in this video is designed to learn how to work the bat properly, that doesn't necessarily mean we want to try to hit the inside of the ball. I would suggest checking out this video for a more in depth explanation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qqejiLSZ3aibdpc.html To put it simply: There shouldn't be any difference in approach no matter the pitch location. The only difference in the swing is simply the timing. This means that for an inside pitch, you will hit it slightly earlier than a down-the-middle pitch, and on an outside pitch you will hit it slightly later than a DTM pitch. So, as for the drill in the video, the approach to the drill is simply to force the hitter to handle the bat properly. So you could set the tee up low and for an inside pitch with the same approach to the drill and practice from there to get a great feel! Hope this answers your questions! If you're still having issues hitting the ball on the ground, I would suggest paying attention to your lead foot and the timing of your stride. If you your foot is landing as you are swinging, this will promote hitting the ball into the ground. This is most common reason for too many grounders. Hope this helps out! I hope this helps when the fall league in my area starts. I made contact *once* in the spring league, and it was a routine groundball to short. I wanna be a place hitter and start hitting line drives into the gap, because I'm pretty fast and I can get around the bases pretty quickly. Any other advice, or videos you can point me to to stop hitting groundballs and start crushing doubles into the gap? (By the way, if it changes anything and any advice, my league doesn't have fences.)
@ProSpeedBaseball
@ProSpeedBaseball 8 жыл бұрын
My main suggestion would be simply to work on swing efficiency. Driving the ball in the gaps versus a hard ground ball is on the difference of slightly different contact on the ball. (Hitting a little higher on the ball will drive the ball down and hard, the same exact swing with contact being slightly lower will result in ball driven into the outfield!) So by focusing on efficiency in you swing and focusing on getting solid contact, you will have a recipe to make yourself a better hitter. I would suggest checking out the free lessons we have available at ProSpeedBaseball.com, it's a great place to restart and build! Good Luck! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

Hey that is great shot for a 12-year-old! Don't pay attention to somebody like these kids who are so jealous they are compelled to 1 up you.And say something stupid like I hit one further. People like that are what I call 1 uppers. They are funny, no matter what you say instead saying way to go,they will 1 up you.Like if you said I hit 2 homers last night ,they just have to say I hit 3! lol I think it is because they have an insecurity complex and have to make themselves feel better by 1 upping whatever it is you say! Don't ever be like that. Many Ballplayers that have a lot of talent at the game unfortunately,ruin it by having their mouth runneth over. lol I say hey man NICE SHOT! If your good it's much better to walk softly and carry a big stick! Your peers will brag for you! +BestOfBaseball It would be really tough to suggest something without physically seeing your swing. One of the most common reasons for hitting too many ground balls is attempting to stride and swing at the same time. Meaning, trying to "step into your swing." If you're doing this, I would suggest trying some swings without striding, and then swinging while striding early. Purely a guess though without seeing the swing. Hope this helps out though! If you have any other questions on this or anything else, just let us know! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

Seems to like most elite hitter's barrel paths are up from behind, at, and past contact(Griffey swingman logo). Especially the top HR guys in the league like Harper, Bautista, Cruz, Donaldson, etc, etc. Would you not want a direct impact of the barrel and ball? Seems like the downward bat path creates more of a glancing/intersecting blow to the ball causing a huge loss in energy transferred in to the ball. What are your thoughts about this video below? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hqiDjaaepsqahY0.html
@ProSpeedBaseball
@ProSpeedBaseball 8 жыл бұрын
+John Whited Hey there again John, thanks for the questions! Yes, you would absolutely want solid contact from the bat coming from behind the ball. The drill in this video is not promoting a downward path of the bat, that's near physically impossible if the bat is swung correctly. It is merely forcing you to have a descending angle with your hand path forcing you to work the bat to create backspin. You can check out this video here to understand the physics of what happens when we swing a bat: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WkfdmEqNzLgnk.html And yes, the bat path will have an ascending angle later in the swing due to the hands and bat working back to the fulcrum (i.e. shoulders.) To put simply: The hands will start above the strike zone, go down towards the strike zone, and because the hands are connected to the shoulders and there is momentum in the swing, the hand and bat will work back upwards in a pendulum-like effect. The point of the drill in this video is to hit a low pitch to learn how to promote backspin on the baseball. It is much easier to create backspin on higher pitches which is why high pitches are popped up a lot. Therefore by following the parameters of this drill, you will learn how to create and feel backspin off of the bat on a pitch where you have to work for it! Hope this answers your questions! +Pro Speed Baseball what is different from your swing method then bobby tewkbaery? he teachs moving the bat behind the back shoulder creating batspeed before the ball is thrown. josh donaldson thanx him for his new hitting method ur thoughts

+platanorico86 The barrel does move behind the shoulder in a high level swing. Anyone who teaches that the hands pull down to the ball without the proper shoulder rotation is misinformed. The barrel must get below and behind the ball.

+platanorico86 Nice to hear from you again! The first thing we'll address here, is that at PSB we don't teach a method as much as we teach biomechanics, physics, and anatomical absolutes combined with positioning of the highest level hitters. In a game speed swing, you will always want continuous motion. This comes straight from physics, that an object in motion can accelerate much faster than an equal object that is not in motion. The moving of the bat behind the back shoulder is simply another way to say "bat lag." At PSB, bat lag is defined as the angle between the forearms and the bat. The positioning you look for is from the down-the-line perspective where the tip of the bat will be behind the hands and something we call the Vertical Toe Line. If this is done properly, you will see the bat behind the shoulder. Therefore, this isn't exactly a new hitting "method" as it is another way to explain (or think about) a certain position that high level hitters attain. Hope this answers your question! As always, if you have any more, just let me know! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

+Pro Speed Baseball So, there is a slightly upward path to the ball? Interesting for you to say that. The pursuit of backspin is overrated...get on plane early, stay on plane and hit the middle half to just slightly below the equator of the ball and hit it hard. Can you do it every time? No, but that is the goal. Backspin is great, but not the reason a ball leaves the park...launch angle. Is exit speed necessary? Sure, but you don't have to be G. Stanton to hit the ball out of the park. An 85mph exit speed will go out of the park just as well as a 100mph exit speed. The difference is launch angle on whether these two imaginary balls leave the park. Good luck,

Listen I hat power I hit 13 home runs out of 20 games and ya it's fun but not fun striking out I wish I had more consistency and your backspin is created in your hips not bat placement
