Everyone wants to learn how to hit driver long & straight. This is one of the images I give my students to understand what is happening when they tighten their wrists as they hit the golf ball. Different mental images allow people to grasp the concept of loose wrists to generate clubhead speed.
If you want to learn how to hit driver long and straight then you cannot keep trying to hit the ball as hard as you can with your arms. When you do this tightens your wrists which slows down the club. I realize this is a weird and different feeling but understand that you need to be loose then having an imagine of why you need loose wrists like the one I give you in this tip should at least get you to try it.
This doesn't mean you are going to hit your driver 3 times and give up. Learning how to hit driver long & straight takes changing what you are currently doing so I suggest hitting at least 1 bucket of balls trying to get this concept. If so, you will hit the ball longer and straighter than you ever have.

Paul I bought that swing rite….its everything you say it is! I can fire it only at 6!. I can’t believe you can do at zero!…I definitely need to work on getting looser!….that device cannot be cheated. Swinging that everyday really reinforces the body swing method…..thank you!

Yeah, you need to be way way way way way looser. Do the monster lag drill daily to unlock them. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/icx5gJV4vNCdc6c.html Then use the swingrite and once you get it snapping give it a little half turn. Over time you will get better at it.

Paul, I've been working on your swing, and I played golf the first time this year. I have out driven, out hit straight shot after shot. I'm 73 years old and I have never played this well. Paul ,I was not trying to hit the Ball, when I did that my game went south. Stopped and just let my body swing the clubs. Most enjoyable day, my drives have been averaging 40+ yards per last year's golf. Thank you....

Simple is the key for sure. Too many people making this way too complicated. The arm unit is a huge piece. Then you have coil/uncoil. Stick with the hinge first. This affects the spin. You will know you have it mastered when you hit every ball either straight or with a hook. At this point you switch to the body to fix the direction. It is literally that simple.

Very good image. I have talked about this in previous tips. The problem is it is a startling feeling to stretch it out. So the person gets startled then they go right back to locked up and controlling it. This is one reason I keep telling people to do the practice swings. This way you can get used to the throwing, startling feeling until it no longer feels weird. Glad you have been doing it.

I was searching for videos on how to cure my elbow injury, that’s when I found your chann. I watched few of your videos including this one, cure elbow injury, hit more distance and lag drills. While resting and waiting to recover from my elbow and wrist pain I kept practising the drills you taught, in my living room. And first time I went back to course to play a match with my friends after just a few days of practising the drills you taught, I played 8 under and my best game ever. Also gained so much confidence that I know I will continue playing better each time. Thank you tons for these great tips.

Thanks for the support. Golfers elbow is not fun. Glad you did the practice swings at home. I keep telling everyone this is the easiest way to work on it. 8 under you best is fantastic. Makes you want to keep doing what you are doing. Keep these drills in mind. If your elbow starts hurting again in the future you are swinging to hard with the arms. Keep them turned off and power the swing with the legs and hips. If so, the pain will never come back.

Hey Paul, I've been a member of Ignition Golf for about a year now. Best investment in my game ever. I've been working on my swing all winter. Shot my first 9 holes yesterday and shot a 40. Drives straighter than I've ever hit them. Irons were greatly improved over last year. Pitching and chipping were both pretty darn good. Had 2- 3 putts and the rest were 2 putts. I hit 66% GIR. I'll be working on my putting and I"m super excited to track my improvement this year. Thanks so much for your amazing coaching. I'd still be a frustrated hacker without your lessons. Stay Loose!

So many people never do anything until they get their clubs out in the spring. Then they work on it in the season when they should be playing great golf after working on it in winter. So you you are off to a great start. I see easy 70's for you this year. Be patient. It does take time to get used to playing to a new level. Keep me posted.

@@paulwilsongolf I work on my swing CONSTANTLY. I travel for work and carry a club into my hotel room to work on turning the hips and getting the club into the correct positions. At home, I have low ceilings, so I can't do full swings in the winter. However, I hung a sheet from the ceiling and worked on my chipping and pitching with my 9i-lob wedges. I hit 40-80 shots per day when I'm home. I have a Swing Caddie SC300i to keep track of my distances. I log everything and study the results.I'm pretty much addicted to learning golf and playing it well. I do have a question for you. I'm still focusing on hitting straight while I slowly add power to my shots. I've improved from 170 yard straight-ish drives to around 220 right now. For the most part, my slice is gone. But, I can't seem to hit it perfectly straight. I use my alignment stick and everything looks/feels straight, but it's not. I played a par 3, 136 yards, pin was center of the green. The ball landed on the left side of the green. It didn't draw that way. It flew straight to the spot. That happens a lot lately. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? Thanks again for the AMAZING lessons, Coach!
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Very good. This is what it takes. For low ceilings get a short club or kids club. You can even grip down and hold it off the ground. Need to do the full swings. You are pulling it. This is your arms starting first. Need to fire the lower a little quicker. For that club do it like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMB0Y8KbtbKcm6c.html Body affects direction. Wrists affect spin. So you are on the wrong direction. Need quick body rotation. Then you will hit it dead straight.

Shot a 38 and 39 for 9 holes. I'm getting a lot of compliments on my improvement, and I tell them all about Paul Wilson's lessons. I'm working on straightening out my irons next. Hey Paul. I play only once or twice per month, so Im always super tense and locked up. I have too many swing thoughts and end up trying to steer the ball as I hit it, which typically doesnt end up well for me. Yesterday I played a terrible round. By the time I got to hole 10, my back was hurting and thought to myself, " Im going to hit it easy and stay loose". What do I have to lose at this point.. I setup to my driver without any tension and thought "neutral grip, coil the shoulders, fire the hips". I hit the ball 250+ right down the middle of the fairway. I couldnt believe I hit that far with an easy swing and straight!!! Ive hit this far before but not with little effort. I was unable to salvage my round due to all the mistakes I made beforehand but I was hitting the ball so much better with all of my woods and irons, puring them! Couldnt believe it :) By the end of the round I thought, golf doesnt have to be difficult, we just make it difficult! Ive always struggled buying in to your concepts even though Im a subscriber because, how can it be this easy? Well, Ill never go back to my old ways. Thank you !

Wow, that's awesome! So glad you tried it but as you said you had nothing to lose. Glad you are on board now. As for not getting out much just do some practice swings at home. It really doesn't take much so you master a few moves. I would be hinging and rehinging. Surely you know how to do this now if you have been following me. This will keep your wrists loose. Then hold the club in the air at knee high and do swings. Up in the air there is nothing to hit. This allows you to feel your legs and hips powering the swing not the hands and arms. If you just wait until the next time you play you will try to hit the ball with the arms due to human nature telling you to hit it and hit it hard. If you are doing swings at home you will get used to using the legs and hips and it will become important to you. So every time you go out you will be thinking of using them. So just do a little work. If you can keep hitting it like that one then maybe you will play a little more. You will certainly have more fun and play pain free.

I have heard that many times in the past. Glad you found me now. Glad you know see hitting is never going to work. Stay focused. This takes a little work. I like to have people doing daily practice swings at home hinging and rehinging. This way you can get it faster than waiting to go to the range once a week. So stay focused on the looseness and swinging no more than 50%. This will take the hitting out of the picture. Once you feel you have the feeling the start switching to the legs and hips for more power. I have tons of tips on hips on the channel. You can do it.

@johnmcgreevey2851 Жыл бұрын
I have another question Paul that I hope you don’t mind answering, and this is something I go back and forth with. At what point do you release the club on the downswing? Is it right when you start the hips or soon you make contact with the ball, then hinge? That motion at times make me get alittle “flippy” through the shot, then I start swinging with my arms again.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
You are not trying to release it unless you need to work on releasing it. My wrists are loose. The club releases on its own because they are loose. You are the top. The club is hinged. You start your body first. The lag angle is compressed until the angle cannot be held any longer. It then release due to inertia pulling the mass (club) to its widest point which is after the ball is hit. Forget seeing that flipping is wrong. Flipping is half right if you are hooking every ball. You get it every ball hooking and you are doing half right. Everyone dwells on the negative. I see the positive. Once you can hook every ball you switch to body to straighten it out. This moves the release ahead of the ball getting rid of the flip. Watch: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oKuHmJx4xtXVqKM.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7p8hLp7sbilhWQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbOGppmEv7SmeYU.html

Hi Paul, I enjoy all your videos, but I have a very simple question: I try as much as I can to play in a relaxed way, but does the shaft have an importance in the gesture, I mean if we have two different shafts will we have two different results? Ex: I have a rather slow swing and I have a rather stiff shaft, so I have difficulty feeling the whip because I don't feel the driver's head.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the tips. Thanks for your support. Shafts are important. There is no industry standard for shafts though. So one companies stiff shaft is not necessarily everyone's. Whenever I get people saying their clubs are light I usually hit them and to me they feel heavy. So this is the person hitting with arms. You say your swing is slow but the clubs feel light. Not sure your arms are loose enough. The weight of the shaft is not going to make that much difference to the feel of the head. I think you need to be looser. You can also get your clubs weighed at a professional fitter to see if they are the right weight. Years ago I remember Ping's being lighter than any other clubs. Not sure if that is the case now but back then it was noticeable. This will put to rest if it is the clubs or not. Then do some of these drills: Check your arms first: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rclze9Gkxt2Wkps.html Here are tips to loosen you up: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mKmlfLh2nc-lZ2Q.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9-CaJRlttyln30.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sL51l6-Krdecd40.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipOUfpCSvZrHZok.html I would video your swing too. Paul, any tips on hitting 100-110 yard shots to upside down bowl style greens that are elevated on all sides and making the ball stay on without rolling off? One of the courses I play regularly has a first hole par 4 that the owners have said "good luck getting a bogey on hole number one" about so I'd be super happy to get a 5 on it but I've been getting 6s-7s (and some 8s!) and that's just no way to start a round of golf. It's a dog leg right that takes me a driver followed by a fairway wood to get to that 110-100 yard area, but after that the ball just doesn't want to land on, and more importantly stay on, the green with my PW or 9 irons and my SW (which I know would go higher and stick better) doesn't go that far at the moment. Only after a skulled shot that rolled up the frontside and lost speed going up the elevated hill surrounding the green on all sides have I seen a ball stay on the green. Usually, though everybody I play with lands short, far, left, right, and if they're lucky to land on the green it always rolls off. The uphill chips and putts after not landing on the green are another bear to contend with due to having to chip up to a green that's at shoulder level, and uphill putts that stop dead on their way and/or are hit too hard and creep back into downhill which almost sends them all the way off the green. It's meant a lot of great 1st and 2nd shots YES's followed by OH NO Bad News Bears stuff that puts us in a bad mindset from the get go. It's tough to start a round with double, triple or quadruple bogeys but I see it all the time on that dreaded hole. It doesn't help that the ground around the green isn't kept very well and is a mixture of hard dirt, crab grass, and mud. It ain't easy bein' (on the) green as Kermit would say. I am at a loss as to how I should plot out that hole. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Sounds like an unplayable hole. Why don't the members get together and say something? There are no real tricks. From 100-110 you are hitting a full shot. This would be a higher lofted club so it should stop but you have to hit enough club to get the ball pin high anything is will roll off the front or back. Tell me what course it is and I will look it up on satellite view so I can see the layout.

@@paulwilsongolf It's called Fort Snelling Public Golf Course in MN. It's just a 9-hole course that's first come first go with no tee times. It's usually pretty busy and beat up, but it's super convenient for after work golf. It's a par 36 but so far none of the people I've played with has broken 40 on it so that's the summer goal right now (the best has been a 41). Thanks!

That is a tricky hole. They are telling you that is unfair. So I would take it as being just that. Green is 60 long x 50 wide. Not the smallest but the no the biggest either. Not sure I really have any magic you can use. You need to stick that approach shot every time unfortunately that isn't going to happen. What I would do is play somewhere else or if you are playing with people who feel the same then make up some sort of rule to play that hole. This poor first hole is probably hampering your game because you are unfairly 3-4 over after 1. So this can't be doing anything positive for your game.

@@paulwilsongolf Sounds good. I'll do my best to stick that approach shot onto the green but if that doesn't happen I'll just consider that first hole nothing more than a warmup and not let it bother me the rest of the round. If it does ever happen I'll consider it a lucky bonus. It feels good that I can at least get it to the 100 yard area in two shots so I'll try to just be happy about that and try not to get mad about any misfortune that happens after that. Maybe I'll try to talk my friends into thinking about that hole as a par 5 instead of a par 4 with a shot for everybody. That might help the hulk anger that boils up in everybody. Thanks again, Paul.

If you’ve watched this video of Paul’s and you like it then send it off to one other person. We are trying to make Paul the most watched teacher in the universe. It’s good karma. Do this and you’ll hit more fairways and greens, more holes in one, more birdies, more eagles and you’ll be club champion over night with a free ticket to have lunch with Jack Nicklaus 🤣😂😅

if it's 5 feet long wouldn't it be a 2 by 5

No because a 2 x 4 is 4" wide by 2" thick. Nice try though.
