The drop shot is a difficult tennis technique to master. To successfully execute drop shots in match situations one must possess the right fundamentals. In this video, I explain how to hit a drop shot and also discuss the most common mistakes at the recreational level when players try to utilize drop shots in their matches.

Learn the fundamentals of the drop shot and use it sparingly in matches. Do not fall in love with the drop shot. If you do here’s what will happen: 🎾 Your opponent starts expecting it 🎾 You consequently start making the dropper “extra short” 🎾 You therefore make more errors Use the dropper every now and then, in the right circumstances with the correct technique and your opponent will be caught off guard. 💪

Hi Nikola. Another great video. We grew up playing on clay ,and the drop shot is a must. Hitting it from sliding too/on clay. In 2012 after seeing Dolgopolov playing Ferrer at US Open, I changed my grip for the drop shots , slices and even volleys. It took me one year of getting used to it. A lot of work against the wall. Now I can hit either with continental or SW grips all 3 shots mentioned. But when I have reversed grips (FH SW for BH slice and drops/ eastern BH for FH side!)the slices, drops and drop volleys are just a pleasure to hit! How you mentioned, the ball rolls back to the net or over, or side ways almost or parallel to the net... and gone. The brush is way longer and it starts around 4 o clock all the way to 7-8 on FH and 8 -4 o clock on BH...the slices are also hit with a very open face of the racquet, with variations. The motion of the wrist is crucial in producing the extra spin , that can be learned by taking a soccer ball and sliding the hand on each side of the ball...next with the racquet..(it's more to it) .I owed you , the message with the punch slice didn't go through. Working on something and still needs a lot of work. Thanks for your inspiration and great job !

Nice video, Nick. Up to your usual high standard. What do you think of using the wall to practice the drop shot? For me, spending a couple of minutes hitting drop shots on the wall before a match seems to work well. What are your thoughts on drop shots hit lower but a bit deeper vs drop shots hit higher but a bit closer to the net (like yours in the video)?

I just realised I've never seen a good video on how to get a drop shot. Like where to aim, what grip to run at the ball with, if you make it to the short ball, down the line, cross etc. i've seen a few different options, some people running with a volley grip, others fully forehand

Thanks for the very informative video. With a drop shot you need to have the racket face more open than with a normal backhand slice, so is it also the case that you should be hitting the ball slightly earlier so that the racket face opens naturally without having to think about it? You make the point in your backhand slice video that contact should be late to avoid racket face opening, so I'm assuming the opposite is the case for the drop shot and contact should be earlier?

Thanks analog, yeah you can do it against the wall. Hard to judge the quality of dropper on wall bc the wall takes away backspin, but better than not practicing drop shots at all.

Another really important thing that isn’t mentioned here is the placement of both players. Do not try and go for a drop shot if you are not inside the baseline and more importantly do not go for a drop shot if the other person is inside the baseline because they can easily get there and punish your shot. Also do not use the drop shot every point you are not Dustin brown use them wisely and sparingly

@@IntuitiveTennis thanks. One more thing to my humble opinion. People think that drop shot do not need to have any or small parabolic path. In fact drop shots have a great parabolic path just the peak is not over the net but somewhere above the service box. I may be wrong.

Thanks Nik. I can't understand the difference between drop shot and backhand slice. I mean I know what they are but I don't know how to execute. @IntuitiveTennis

It’s more difficult on a lower ball since the swingpath is high to low. What usually happens is that players hit up on a low ball dropper resulting in a dropshot with too much height
