Matty, I have to say I have been struggling mentally lately with certain situations in my life. Some days are a struggle to get out of bed. I just found your channel this summer. You have motivated me to get back into golf and get out of the house. I haven't gotten any better but your videos always put a smile on my face and make me laugh. Neither which I do much anymore. I am golfing tomorrow and really looking forward to it. Thank you for the content. I hate social media but pretty amazing how you can positively affect some schmuck halfway around the world in the states.

Hi Playa excellent. Keep on keeping on I understand I had similar the last couple years for months at a time including struggling to get out of bed. Some serious scheisse happening in life. I don't like when people recommend too much what 'helped them' because we are all different but I can safely say that reframing my brain has kept the bad juju away. I read REFRAME YOUR BRAIN by SCOTT ADAMS and I have hacked my brain from getting into those dark places for too long.

Having played all these years and played with many good golfers all the way down to a +4. There is one thing they do that really impresses me. It's not driving. It's not irons. It's not long putts holed. It's the ability to pitch from 40 yards from every position imaginable to 3 feet. The one thing you don't need to be tall, strong, fit, flexible or fast to do and we can all do if we put in the effort. It's also the one thing handicap golfers neglect, myself included.

Hey Matt, I know you're not a believer in the whole 'strokes gained' approach, but Arccos calculates it automatically. I got fitted for some Ping clubs when the G425s came out a few years ago. They came with integrated sensors and a free trial of the software. I like it for the automatic shot tracking, learning my distances / club, and also tips on where I should focus practice time. Maybe reach out to them and see if they want to provide you some sensors to screw into your existing grips and you can use it for more content. You could review it and also get some insight into the strokes gained for your game. I am not playing the G425s anymore, I'm playing Takomo 101s (love them!). I came to rely on the Arccos, so I am a paid subscriber now and am using the screw-in sensors on my grips. It works well on my iPhone and Apple Watch combo.

Matty, thanks for your channel, as a Golfer who first took up the clubs in late March, your advice and ego checks have been wonderful. Played my affiliate course's Monthly Medal on the weekend after coming last the previous two times with 132 and 126 shots on stroke with my 36 handicap. I had 103 on the weekend and most of the reasons were from your advice on course management, which kept my shots down but also kept the evil thoughts out of my head of launching my 60 degree to the neighbouring town. GIOTG and the Rule of 12 have helped me come a fair way and the 60 degree hasn't left the bag in a month.

Like it that you are incorporating strokes gained. It’s complicated, but I’ve found it helpful, especially tempering my expectations and helping me understand the difference between a kind bad shot (like a not long but mostly straight tee shot) and a really bad shot (like leaving a wedge 35 yards away when you’re at 100).

Played 9 holes today, and was hitting and scoring poorly. BUT, I improved quite a bit in avoiding the mental death spiral. I could hear you in my head, Matt. So after each poor shot, I just focused on the next, forgetting the previous shot. And I started looking for positives. I had 18 putts in 9 holes, which was a big improvement over the last few rounds. And I improved my pre-shot routine by checking my footing and my clubface alignment. I've been setting up wrong for so long that setting up properly feels awkward. But the results are wonderful.

Brodie invented SG for himself (a 6 hcp at the time) to know what to work on in the limited time a math/finance professor has. Anyone with brains can now use the same information not to "play a certain way" but identify what they're not doing as well as the average of players of a certain handicap (SG is not just against PGA tour) and understand where the score is being made. Idiots and entertainers on TV or the interwebs may not get it, but it's a godsend for every player, of every level... provided they use it as it should. It should be fairly obvious that you're more likely to make a putt if it's shorter rather than longer. It's more likely that your ball ends closer to the hole if you play it from a closer location, and you get to a closer location if you driver long (and in play). Quantifying that and seeing how it works respective to your game is what SG gives... Read the book.

Here’s the best part about strokes gained. Your app tells you what to work on. But doesn’t tell you how. So you just end up going for lessons. Here’s a way to skip all this wankery. Go for lessons. And practice. No matter what your app tells you, you are gonna have to do those two things. SG on the app tells you youre weak in these areas: Driving: practice driving. Approach: practice irons. Chipping: practice chipping. Putting: practice putting. Deep. Only idiots and entertainers on KZfaq will tell you this: Idiotic strokes gained by KZfaqr idiot: These are very obvious you don’t need to have sensors to tell you. If you’re 3 putting more than one per round, work on speed control putting to a tee in the ground. Minimum one hour per week. If you’re three putting or missing short putts, or both, practice 1 foot putts. Make 100 in a row three days a week. If you’re losing balls off the tee, take the driver out the bag and go for a lesson. Begin to understand your distance and shot shape so you can aim better to avoid losing balls. If you need distance, Go for a lesson. Don’t buy a new driver yet. If your approach play suck’s and you not hitting greens, maybe it’s your bad drive. Pick a tee club that gets you in play. 200 yards is plenty until you learn the driver at lessons. Then learn to aim properly. Account for your shot shape. Aim to something left if you fade. Something right if you draw. Do this approach. Identify the short side and hit the ball to the fat side. That will improve where your finish in relation to the green, for chipping and putting and pitching. Avoid the short side. Work on toe down chipping. Try chip to inside 6 feet and increase your chance of up and down to 50% or more by doing that. Practice your short game three hours for every hour on long game. Visualize. Create a pre shot routine that is consistent. You get these religious zealots who get very nasty because they know they’ve been sold a bill of rotten goods with this strokes gained nonsense. All they had to do was take lessons

I like the comparison between what distance you have to be in the fairway vs the rough, but I think it would have been helpful to also see what would have happened if you took the shorter club but still missed the fairway. As an example, the comparison at 16:00 is 170 in the rough vs 190 in the fairway, what would have happened in terms of strokes gained if you planned to be 190 in the fairway but still missed it? You mention at 14:28 that your tee shot caused you to blow up, so I think having more discussion around why shorter clubs is not the same as the safer/better strokes gained plan is worthwhile.

I’ve come to realize tour stats can be very misleading, as they represent average tour performance in tour conditions eg. ice-level slick greens. I’ve read somewhere a tour pro is expected to shoot -8 to -12 on their home course in normal conditions, way beyond scratch level. Regardless the stats do expose amateur’s unreasonable expectations and the same stats can help an amateur towards becoming scratch.

Hmmm that situation i was luckily in my comfort zone at that distance with that wedge or 9 iron. So it was easy. But if it were less comfy like a tight tee shot on a long par 4, i just gear down to the go to club of the go to club. Just something im automatic with. Then i get some space after that shot to collect myself. Bitch and moan for a good 2 minute walk then boom back in the process. It’s over. Any repurcussion must be dealt with by the course since it’s their issue. Back in the process. The next hole, i had to stick with the scratch length tee shot. But i wanted to hit a big driver. I took that annoyed energy and stuck it into committing to the big driver mentally. Thats why i hit that mini driver so bad. If i hit the big driver, that hole finishes with a par. Then by the next hole, i was playing normal again forgot about that guy.

One of the points I also made with him is strokes gained stats for a round are really not that helpful. Everyone is going to have their share of great and bad shots during a round. It takes more than 10 rounds to see if the mistakes and great shots are happening in the same areas.

@@GolfSidekick The biggest problems the tracking apps face is that they just tally your averages. Anyone who's studied probability and statistics knows that you can't characterize a process (golf swing) using just a single parameter. You need to know the shape of the distribution. My average SG driving to a scratch golfer is roughly 0. However, if you actually take a deep dive and look at the distribution instead of just the average, you'll see it's bimodal. I still need to work on my driving (or course management) because about 10-20% of the time I'll hit a gawd awful drive into Narnia. So, strokes gained tells me my drives are good, on average. You don't have to compare to a tour pro. If your handicap is 25, you can compare to a 20 handicap to see where you are losing or gaining strokes. Then you know where it is easiest to improve your game.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick Ай бұрын
Let’s say your app tells you that you need to work on ‘approach’ or ‘driving’ because you lose the most strokes to a 20 handicap. For a 25 handicap who has limited knowledge, how would they do that? Smash buckets of balls at the range trying to add distance? Do they know that for every 10 yards added, an increase of 5% dispersion makes the new distance not worth it? Maybe buy a new driver? Lets say it’s a 14 handicap comparing with a 10. The 14 handicap is ‘losing strokes gained’ to a 10 in putting. What does he do to get better? Practice? Do we need an app to tell us that we should not three putt 5 times a round? All roads, regardless of handicap lead to the solution which you could do without getting involved with strokes gained: LESSONS. Either that, or a new driver. No one really needs an app to tell them to go get lessons and practices

Because you’re the baus of all bauses I followed your advice in a prior video about going out alone and playing. Given what happened in this video, what’s the “cutting in” etiquette when by yourself?

I was on the par 3, about the 6th hoel or something, dude tees up on the hole, hits 3 balls in the water, i'm like WTF. I got 4 people behind me. If he wanted to cut in, he should have cut in on hole 9 or start on 10. Usually it's just common sense. If you're gonna be slow, wait at a par 3 to let people through. If you're gonna be quick, skip 2 holes ahead of a 2 ball, 1 hole ahead of a 4 ball

genuine question - there is data from apps like shotscope with 1000s of players showing 20+ hdcp have a lower average score going for par 5s in 2 compared to those that layup to distances. is there bias in this that you see?
@GolfSidekick

Where is the raw data? Everyone quotes this but no one has access to the raw data. The individual course’s and holes and player profiles. Which courses? What do those holes look like? Is it links? Parkland? Municipal? Manicured? Resort? Florida? Midwest? Jungle? Tight? Generous? Hilly? Flat? Blind shots? ‘20+ handicaps going for par 5 in two?’ - let’s just allow that to sit inside our heads for a bit. 450 yards. 20+ handicap. 220 yard drive with a 10 degree driver. They don’t hit it long and straight but let’s give them 220 yards which generous. Dispersion will be 50 yards left or right at any time. No guarantee of a straight shot at such low loft. 18° or more will give much less dispersion. 230-240 remaining best case scenario. They hit a low lofted 15 degree 3 wood maybe. Off the ground, how far left and right does shot that go? How long does a 20+ handicap hit that club reliably? 190? Not a high percentage of 20+ handicaps should have it in their bag but they try anyway because of the data, so let’s assume it’s 2 perfect strikes on both shots with 10 degrees of loft and 15 degrees of loft. What is the design of the hole? What happens at 50 yards? Are there bunkers? Fairway bunkers from 50 yards for high handicaps the hole is over. Does the remaining shot finish on a downslope? Is it a raised green? Can they hit partial wedges to raised greens? Does the rough pinch in the fairway? If they top the shot with a three wood, what is in front of them? Are they proficient with a 50 yard partial shot if they get the best case scenario? How often are playing? Do they have situational awareness for the lie? Can they read the lie in the rough on the third shot? So many factors. Lets just say, 20+ handicaps going for par 5 in two is ridiculous on the face of it. Blanket statements do not work in golf. They usually try to hit two perfect high pressure shots because of these stupid blanket statements from the data pole and destroy the score. Accepting that a bogey is a SUPERB score on the par 5 and playing it as a par 6 or par 7 is much more effective. We are trying to reduce big numbers, not trying to make birdies. When 20+ handicap tries to play like a pro, that’s when they stay at 20+ handicap.

@@GolfSidekick thanks for the reply. i've had more success following your advice personally, but always wonder where gaps could be in the knowledge. (i'm a 12 hdcp that can't hit a 3 wood off the deck, so I don't!)

To much mathski for me, but it seems like the SG calculation doesn’t differentiate between a scratch golfer and a PGAT pro? If I’m correct(and I may not be) it seems wrong bc a PGAT pro is likely a +6 or lower.

There is a lot of data not available Putting: innacurate because GPS is not accurate enough to the yard/foot/inch and people are supposed to edit their rounds in the dashbord from memory to insert their putts. Only PGA Tour is accurate and close enough to scratch putting too. Approaches: Number of strokes taken from every distances in the fairway and rough are only available for PGA Tour golfers. Gotta patch it together best we can with the poor data that is out there

Stat tracking has gone off the deep end. I have always been about keeping track of fairways hit/miss direction, GIR/miss direction, scrambling%, putts per GIR, and penalty strokes per hole. But, Strokes gained is just too much under the microscope to get the real benefits of information for game improvement in my opinion.

surely no-one does that though, do they? SG helps you average out your strengths and weaknesses over many rounds easily, but it isn’t going to help you with course strategy during a round. For example, I’ve worked on chipping a lot more than putting recently because it turns out my putting is generally stronger on average.

This is the baloney that is supposed to make me better than “keep the ball in play, hit the shots you can hit, and play to your favorite distancés?” Yeah, the stat and data people can keep touching themselves over gaining .02848 strokes for nonsense. Just saying, I have seen a pro, I currently carry a 7i, PW, SW, and putter. I have been consistently in last place with my usual group, but I have been shaving huge chunks of strokes every round while they continue to use their full bag, get pissed when they slice it into the woods, and wonder how they have made no progress in the past two golf seasons. I love clowning on the strokes gained maximists. Most of them don't have any background or knowledge in pure mathematics. IMO using the entire population of all scratch golfers as a sample size for all the strokes gained stats is total nonsense. Garbage in, garbage out. No 2 shots, courses, lies, players, etc. in golf are the same. Not to mention that the "data" from Across self selects for people who actually bother to use their product. No bias there at all 😂 SG maxi counterpoint: "but there is so much data". So what? The amount of data actually has no bearing on the quality of a model. If there is garbage data with biases then it would make it worse. Also, more distance = better strike. The STRIKE is the key part to good golf, not the distance. Distance is the byproduct. Of course people who hit it longer (over a large population of data as SG does) will score better. Because they are able to strike the ball! How is that revolutionary or useful info?

Bro stop talking dirty to me!!! Most people who claim to be strokes gained maxis don't even use the information anyway. They repeat some line they read somewhere like that "literally millions of data points literally" But when I played golf in Scotland on the links courses in the wind...that's when Strokes Gained made a lot of sense to me. It's for wide American Tour courses, for people playing the same course, four days in a row, against people with very tight skill variations, on courses selected for TV. For the average man? Just get some lessons, get a better impact position and strike. The ball goes straighter and knock on effect, distanc eincreases because of the STRIKE. Also putting stats are all hogwash on those arccos and shotscope, because no GPS is accurate enough to pick it up. And then you rely on people actually editing every round to inch-accuracy. Impossiblé as the spanish say Wait for my 10 DUMBEST THINGS GOLFERS SAY VIDEO coming soon. You will like it.
