Different shapes of handles require different grips. In this video I explain my way of holding these different shapes.

Same here. Instinct led me to believe gripping like a vice gave me more control. After shooting 30 arrows with a lighter squeeze into a much tighter group... I realize I've been trying to control too many things at once. 🤦🏾‍♀️

In korean, that grip is called 흘려잡기/흘려쥐기 (hıllyəjabgi/ hıllyəjuigi). I am surprised that you know so deeply about our korean bow techniques.

Fundamentals are what we all need to practice. Thanks Armin for bringing the information to us. I’ve just switched to Asian style from Mediterranean style and always used the Asian style grip to shoot my Mediterranean style bow. Glad I did not have that habit to break. It felt more natural to me.

Hi Armin! Thanks for these type of videos, really, they are more helpful they might seem. When I started archery back then, I had many many questions like this, and was looking for materials on YT like crazy. I honestly cannot remember how I ended up here, but thank God I did! All those kind of videos you made for beginners and/or for advanced archers are really gems. I still appreciate to this day that you took your time and shed some lights on topics like this, in a manner that a 100% beginner can get everything (and many times got in depth with the 'how' and 'why' - really cool). It's always a good idea to upload some more 'educational' videos, even if there are already a lot on your channel - as we all grow with our experience we might see things different, or a bit more detailed, from a riper perspective. Also, repetition makes us evolve, so thumbs up and thanks again! :)

Thank you for this video. The timing is perfect I had taken off the big chunky handle off my black shadow Koran bow. Wrapped it with leather and another covering. Will have to play with the different ways of gripping the bow.

I was taught the dont grip the bow thing when we started archery with the shelf recurve bows, but I always wondered why the Koreans held their horse bows like that. I’ve been using a Korean horse bow and shooting with kahtra/follow through off both sides of the bow, even with western style shooting, with pretty decent results. Next time I shoot with the thumb ring I’m definitely going to revise this video first and try it, I just hope the arrow doesn’t clip my index finger since I also shoot with vanes. Thanks again btw these are really helpful!

One can hope that Armin might do a video on stance, but in the meantime - For a right-handed archer, left foot pointing towards the target or a degree or two to the right. Right foot pointing to the right about 85 degrees. Think of an imaginary line running back from the inside of your left foot. Your right foot's heal should be about five centimetres to the right of that line. The outside edges of your feet should within two imaginary, vertical lines dropped from you shoulders. Predraw, the front of your body will be facing about 45 degrees to the right. However, your head should be turned to face the target. Or so I've been doing for the past 22 years, for whatever that's worth. Regardless, all the best enjoying your Korean bow.

Over the last few years I have had health problems and have had to give up many of my recreational activities and hobbies due to my health and have struggled to find a replacement and things to do with my time but you have inspired me to buy a bow and try archery as I feel this is still something I can do and enjoy. Yes, I need this. I am not sure how I should hold a Turkish bow or anything other than my Korean bows so I hold them all the Korean way but it doesn't feel right or comfortable holding my Turkish bows like that.

I'd say the biggest difference between the trad pistol grip shelf bows and the asiatic reflex bows is that you don't actually grip the bow but touch the thumb and index finger tips ..only enough to not drop it and then the bow arm is relaxed, this is because we want the bow to sit perfectly still and not move upon release. Asiatic reflex bows..we grip em a certain way and we want the bow to react to the release in a predictable way and grip with the lower three fingers....In Arab archery we clench the lower three fingers of both the bow hand and draw hand at the same time getting tighter until release. I'm gonna have to try the Korean bow method..it makes sense .....Armin your awesome buddy 😎 ......thank you very much

Really interesting topic! Especially on the Korean bow. Comparing the Korean and the Turkish, does different handle design (curve in the front vs curve in the back) effect different gripping ? I tried it on my KaiYuan bow and it feels quite good

I'm holding my bow (pistol grip) mostly with my thumb and my pinky. Can't hit a barn door, but that's probably simply because of poor release and badly spined arrows. :/

I am just starting, I have a horse type bow, I am having trouble with accuracy. I have been resting my arrows on the knuckle of my index finger but I noticed you rest the arrow on the other side of the bow

Yet another very useful tutorial from the Guru! But wait - what about the long bow? I tried the bottom fingers closed grip on my homemade definately-not-war longbow (7th attempt and 18 months of trial and error later I finally have a 62lb draw longbow with balanced limbs - but that's another story!) beacuse mostly habit from using asiatic reflexes. It dosen't work! Then tried the pistol grip method you mention above and that didn't work. I'm trying to learn/use the full grip i.e. closing all fingers with equal force but It dosent seem to work - the bow dosen't feel comfortable and stable both when drawing and after the shot. I suppose my inexperince is also to blame but if you have any pointers on the proper grip for a longbow, that'd be much appreciated!

Regarding the round handles like at @1:40 , I find that when I initially grip the bow I use your technique, but when I draw I naturally sort of relax the fingers on my bow hand. I guess I'm used to that from Olympic style recurve shooting.

Excellent video Armin! To seque, I have a question, if you're okay with answering it. I bought a scythian horsebow(25 pounds at 28') from flagella dei in december and have been shooting it, atleast twice a week now. I kinda want to get a heavier bow, but i'm unsure where to go. How much heavier would it be okay to go without it being excessive? and also do you have any fun asiatic bows that you'd recommend at that weight?

if your for is settled and steady, you could go for 35-40# I would not go higher. too many good bows out there. really depends on your max draw length, the style you like and your budget

Question, what about holding Arrows in the bow hand, the grip is very different and can be difficult.

I believe all khatra comes naturally from a correct grip on the bow, which provides all torque that is needed by itself. Would you agree?

Here I thought I finally had gotten my grip down for the Kaya. Gotta try that weird diagonal thing tomorrow! Though, my hands are tiny, so the grip has never felt as good as the ones on my compounds. If all else fails I guess I'll do something blasphemic like making my own grip for it. But first: try that diagonal thing for a while xD

it is common that you need to make your own one, as every hand is different. in the beginning Alibow made a refinished handle on their bows and one could shape it as needed

Making the grip thinner is an option. If you do that, take care to keep the shape the same while removing material. Take you time and remove small amounts then test gripping the bow with the grip cover wrapped around the reduced grip. Draw the bow without an arrow and see how it feels, then let off. Testing the feel with the grip cover on is important as you can get a false "good-feel" without it only to find out things are different with the cover on.

Yeah, I've thought about that too (already did that on one of the compounds, I probably should've noted). Makes a lot of sense to try that first, and if all else fails, make a new one. I haven't used the grip cover at all since it already was so large. Is there any benefit to adding it at all (after reducing size of course)? Any idea for good tooling for this rubber material? Knife might go haywire. Sandpaper would clog quickly?

How would you suggest I hold a Numair Archery Sitian bow? You reviewed their Sikiti but I got a Sitian - basically Scythian style bow, with the handle "bulge" facing towards the archer. It's an odd grip. I'll try the Korean bow grip(?) see how that goes?

How about a traditional English Longbow with no contoured grip, arrow rest or anything else to help. Would that be the same grip as an Asiatic bow although the bow itself is totally different?

Sorry i didnt watch your films for a while. I come with some question: do you have experience with compound, block bows? I shoot samick polaris 40lbs and then 60lbs black hunter(idk what company it is, i bought it on ebay) and now i am thinking about conpound bows, can you tell what is good for practise? I dont want to buy hunting extra ordynary 1k euros bow, just something to have fun.
