Thank you for posting this video. This method was a game changer for me using the ultra-fine black ark like a jnat. I have been using my very narrow cotical as a slury stone, do not have a washita, and have been getting fantastic results. I was using Shapton pro stones for early progression, and found that I kept getting set back with the bevel. Using the ark as the bevel setter really locked in the edge consistancey, and it cut my honing time down considerably. Another thing to note, is my blades are warped, and the consistancy of the stone has made all the difference. Cheers!

Great video Jacques, and very timely for me. I've been sharpening freehand for about 15 years now but have never used an Arkansas stone. I bought a black Ark recently and have been resisting burnishing it, because I know the end result will be an even less abrasive surface. Your discussion confirmed what I was thinking. My stone is flat. I'm just going to use it. Thank you for the info!

Clever use of natural stones Jacques, I must agree that burnishing black Arks is pointless, especially with oil as the medium . Rougher finish and water 💧 cuts far better ! The reason I use tomatoes 🍅 as my edge test , is my body hairs too fine 😂. Great video Jacques ❤.

Good morning Martin, blessed weekend for you my friend and thanks for the kind words! Those finer more delicate body hairs is an even better test IMO. After all, bevel set is the most critical step, that said nothing wrong with tomatoes. best wishes, regards jacques

I have been using my Washita as the finishing stone, it's a good stone too. The razor gives a real close shave, but is a bit harsh, if you know what I mean. The only reason I would go that step further and use my Black or trans Ark now, would be to tame the razor down a bit. Washita's are one of my favourite hones, as they can easily be used as a lowish grit stone, but you can still finish a razor on it. No wonder the woodworkers in England and elsewhere loved it so much, despite having some really good home-grown stones of their own.

Fully agree with your observations Mark, also one of my favourites! They are incredible stones with a huge working range, woodworkers love, but so does us shavers.

Great video Jacques very informative, I have a question for yourself, as you are south African have you every used a Zulu grey whetstone and if you have what are your thoughts ?

Hi MrE, thank you for the kind words, much appreciated. Yes, I have used Zulu Grey and found them interesting and can be fantastic if you get the right one. The 1st is that they can range from 500 grit to very fine, both hard and soft, so it all depends on what you get. therefore not all Zulu's are finishers. The one I current own is a prefinisher, or until I can get it work finer. I selected from 4 stones, that said all the current batch stones seem the same - prefinishers.
