How to Hook a Router Up to Your T-Mobile Gateway
I have had a lot of success with my T-Mobile Home Internet, and I want to share that with people. Here is how I hooked my router to my gateway, and it has worked great for me.

just signed up for T Mobile Home Internet. A lucky shot I would say. Got it connected and started monitoring speed, the results: some good ones and some very bad ones. But the bad ones over passed the good ones (speeds around 1 or 2 Mbps). After calling CS three times I realized that they had no answer to such erratic behavior. They sound nice over the phone, interested in resolving the issue, but not solid recommendation beyond "did you try different spots in the house?" A ticket was created but... no answer given... To what I completely found unacceptable and decided to return the equipment. Btw, I have seen a lot of videos here and I find interesting the fact of several of them addressing issues like : add an antenna, a router, change this and that, go to a website and do... etc. Who is to do that? I find those videos irrelevant for what they implied. The customer simply wants a product that works closed enough to what it is advertised... simple...

One more important thing about properly configuring your own router with this gateway, make sure you enable IPV6 and put it in PASSTHROUGH MODE. I could not get Netflix or some other streaming services to work through my router but after making this change everything works perfect now.

Incredible, straightforward video. I've had my TMobile internet device for 5 days now; total POS, couldn't find all my devices, buffering, etc. No help from TMobile's customer service whatsoever. I even asked them if a router would help speed up things. "No probably not". " Even their speedtests showed 17 down and 35 up! Thank goodness I found your video. I'm headed out to purchase a router - and, thanks to your excellent explanations, I'll know how to proceed with router's settings. You rock.

I wonder if they've changed this page? When I connect to the IP listed on the gateway I am defaulted to /home. It's an unsecure connection, and I was not prompted to logon. I see a simple screen showing what is in the android app - mainly just connection speed and firmware versions. There are no options for anything else. (on the left side are icons for Home and Support - with support simply listing a link to a FAQ and support phone numbers.

Is this information still accurate as of March 18, 2024? This video is nearly two years old at this point. We switched to T-Mobile and have had issues with HULU disconnecting our account due to “location” changes. I’ve read that the TM Gateway uses dynamic IP address, which is constantly changing so, to HULU, it looks like we’re in a different location each time it changes to a new IP address 😫

Sadly, this method of turning off the WiFi only works on the Nokia Gateway. That being said, you can still hook a router to your Gateway and run dual signals, just name make sure that all of the logins for each broadcast are different and hook in through the router. I have tested this, and it worked.

Thanks for the video. I may end up needing it, but I have a question. We have a Netgear Nighthawk gaming router. We really don't play a lot of games but we have a lot of devices using the WiFi. The router has WiFi. The T-Mobile gateway has WiFi. Is there a way to connect the gateway to the router using the WiFi instead of a wired ethernet cable connection? The best place in the house for the T-Mobile gateway is upstairs on top of my husband's dresser. There is no direct way to connect the router to the gateway AND connect to his computer downstairs (where the router is now) using ethernet. He still uses a tower and doesn't have a WiFi adapter. I know we can get one but then all the devices will be connected using WiFi in the house (right now, he's using ethernet and I usually use ethernet just to try and not bog down the WiFi channels). I'm worried that putting everything on the WiFi will be too much.

Called tmobile and the tech pretty much told me I need to buy vpn and download firmware to my router to get around the double nat. Sad part is I also have a 100gb mobile Hotspot and it's always been nat type 2 so why the issues

I'm using the newer Arcadyan KVD21 5G Gateway with my T-Mobile Home Internet (TMHI). Since DHCP is automatic on the gateway and can't be accessed, it needs to be turned off on the TP-Link router. As I'm sure you and your viewers are aware, you cannot have two DHCP servers operating on the same network without a lot of problems. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the wireless is on the Arcadyan KVD21 5G Gateway. I could see using a WiFi extender for those areas where WiFi has trouble reaching, but I'd say that wireless coverage is pretty even between the KVD21 and the TP-Link AX50. The big difference is in tweaking the network, and that can only be done when a router is in place behind the TMHI gateway.

@@JackNtheXbox Thanks very much for that link! I finally got the Blue Cave Router set up to work with the T-Mobile Gateway. I'm seeing pretty good speeds of 200-250 mbps average download and at times this morning I even reached into the 350 mbps range, which is what Spectrum is currently giving me. My average upload speeds have been between 25-50mbps which totally beats the 10mbps Spectrum upload speed. I have had the T-Mobile unit for a couple days now, and am going to continue to compare it to Spectrum for the next two weeks and make my decision. As of right now, I am getting CONSISTENT Spectrum speeds of 350mbps, and the regular monthly price is $75, but with the current Stimulus Credit bringing my bill down to $49.74, the prices are about even. All things being equal, I would probably switch to T-Mobile because I know the Spectrum discount will expire at some point. Other than the tricky set up with my router, I so far do like the T-Mobile internet. I have over 12 devices hooked up including my kid's computers and iPads, along with two Apple TV's etc, and everything is running fine so far. I have noticed no slowdowns or buffering issues. Thanks for this video. As for changing the MTU size, some people recommend that you add 28 to the optimum file size that's been determined to have 0% loss. In my case it's 1458 and I added 28 to arrive at MTU of 1480. But I don't see a big difference from the standard 1500 size in terms of internet speed is concerned. Have you noticed any significant internet speed improvement by downsizing the MTU to 1420? And is the 1420 after it's been added by 28 or do we need to add to it so it'll be 1448? Bit confusing by any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks again. Btw, I'm using an Arcadyan gateway and the current firmware doesn't have any level of settings your Nokia has. It's completely stripped down, such that it needs to be hacked to turn off the WiFi.
@JackNtheXbox
@JackNtheXbox 2 жыл бұрын
The MTU changes are minimal and I did add the 28 as that accounts for audio in the latency. The changes to my speeds were there though, so in order to optimize my speeds I did keep the MTU adjusted to 1420. I have seen that the Arcadyan does not work the same...I really hope TMobile gets the gateways dialed in with more features and settings.
@EdwardNagel
@EdwardNagel Жыл бұрын
If you use a VPN, the VPN will add to the headers and push you over the limit of the gateway's max MTU... subsequently, endpoints while connected to the VPN will appear to slow down and/or become unresponsive as the packets are fragmented... So, lowering the max MTU avoids this fragmentation while connected to the VPN. You cannot change the max MTU on the T-Mobile gateway, but you can change them on your local router as JackNthebox did. So, for people working from home, if T-Mobile hasn't raised their max MTU, then you will have to lower the max MTU on your router, or individual network devices. Obviously, easier to set it on your router. Don't hate me if I used some incorrect terminology. I hope that I was clear enough to explain why.

I’m having a problem with T-Mobile 5g home internet that has not been resolved despite many calls in to the help line. I’ve had T-Mobile 5g home internet for almost a month now, and the short version is that every so often the gateway drops the network. When I say “drop the network,” I mean to say it throws everything off of the Wifi that it’s broadcasting, and anything plugged in via ethernet says “no network found. (To elaborate this point, cell phones switch to cellular data because wifi is gone for them, and computers hardwired into the gateway think that they are no longer plugged into anything.) Turning off the gateway and turning it back on resolves the issue, but doesn’t prevent it from happening again. Whatever is happening doesn’t seem to affect our connection speed/strength when the gateway IS providing signal to devices in the home, but due to the nature of our work, we need a connection that won’t just disconnect randomly

Great video. After reading through all the comments I'm still confused about adding a router. I have the Arcadyan KVD21 gateway. I have 5 bars of extended 5G which works well in my house, but my Ring security cams need more reception. I get on average 225 down and 80 up. I will probably have 10 or less connected items. Will I have conflicts with the gateway broadcasting and also the router without any custom settings? If so what solution do I need ? Thank You.
@JackNtheXbox
@JackNtheXbox Жыл бұрын
Herald, your situation describes one of the reasons I hooked up a router. Most routers have a stronger signal that reaches farther. The Arcadyan was an improvement over the Nokia Gateway, but they still don't seem to broadcast as far. With my router, I get signal on my entire property.

Yes, you would need to connect them to your router broadcast. There is a work around, if you create the WiFi name and password on your router to be the same as your gateway's, they will automatically connect to your router.

The interface for the newer Sagemcom gateway is pretty lame and you can't disable WiFi. Also, When I plugged my already setup Linksys router in, everthing connected fine, but I discovered DL speeds were 2-3 times slower than if connected to the gateway. Most likely NAT conflict - I perhaps could have gone to bridge mode, but instead, I pointed all devices to the TMHI gateway and now use the Linksys router as a wireless bridge for my LT station. 🙂

I have a question. I want to work remotely. They require a HARD WIRE connection.. (broadband) YET T mobile has pretty reliable speeds. Is attaching a ROUTER to the "can" something that can mimic or protect reliability /security for many remote jobs? Also, with a router, does your wifi password remain the same? Or do you change it with the router?.. (are the bands still split? )
@JackNtheXbox
@JackNtheXbox Жыл бұрын
You have options. Yes, the router does create a wired security network. You will just want to verify with your work that they are cool with it... This is not a "mobile hotspot" so they should be good with it. You can clone your current network password so nothing will change and you will not have to go through and reconnect all of your devices. This is done by simply making your WiFi name the same as your current WiFi and making the password the same. Last, you 2.4 and 5 Ghz can be combined or split...up to you. I split mine.

I got the TMobile tower you showed in the video about 6 months ago for my house, had about 3 out of 5 bars and 7 devices hooked up to it. My Xbox series x says strict NAT and upnp not successful. Haven't had anything like this happen in the 6 months I've had the home internet, so I got another tower, this time being the arcadyan one that is only directed towards gaming and whatnot. hooked everything up, tower says very good connection and I'm hit once again with that strict NAT and upnp not successful. But I also guess TMobile home internet doesn't support upnp because of the way the ip address setup is. Would getting a router fix this issue, or would I be better off returning the tower? Thank you for taking the time to read my comment

I have heard from a few different viewers about something similar to this happening to them. I was able to get my Xbox to open NAT using the router settings and putting my XBOX IP into the DMZ. There is some risk with this since that removes the device from being behind any firewalls, but game systems encryption security is usually way better. Hooking up a router to my Tmobile internet has been the best move I have made with it.

This is because only the WiFi is being disabled on the 5G gateway, not its router. This means that your new home network is double-NAT'd or going through 2 routers - first the 5G router and then your new router. While giving you your own router and its features, you are paying the price of going through 2 gateways or NAT devices. It would be nice if the 5G gateway allowed bypassing the built-in router.

So now after almost 2 months, I can play online again, but it says upnp isn't successful in the settings with a moderate NAT. I don't know if this is still an issue with the TMobile towers, since I have a router wired to mine. All I did was buy a Netgear router, specifically wifi 6 enabled, logged into it on my computer and changed the Upnp and NAT forwarding settings, then hard wired from the router to my console. Hopefully you guys seeing this find this useful🫡
